I was lucky enough to receive one free. The first few days were amazing. It was really cold. Then that coldness started to dissipate. Then the unit started to make a noise. A loud noice. The company replaced the unit - but the noice persisted. Meaning it was probably an issue with the mattress cover. In the end I stopped. The app was free also, and now you need a subscription. When it worked it was beautiful. You'll also notice an increase in energy bills as these things aren't cheap to run for 8 plus hours a day.

Just to be 100% clear; I used to be a sleep technician - there is NO WAY an app can get that much information on your sleep accurately, or even vaguely well.
In a sleep study, you are hooked up with 30 or more leads, many have direct contact with your skin, including about 10-20 on your scalp (that are pasted on with a highly conductive glue like substance AND tape). And EVEN THEN, it's not terribly easy to know what stage of sleep you are in by reading the brainwaves those 20 leads generate data with.
A fucking phone app, that is at best working on one or two sensors, that aren't even in contact with your scalp will be able to tell you, exactly, jack shit.
Snoring / breathing is so massively different from person to person, a microphone that MIGHT pick up breathing (would have to be an amazing mic, so definitely NOT a phone mic), would again, mean basically nothing. Snoring CAN mean apneas or hypopneas, but it also sometimes doesn't and is also in itself NOT an indicator of stages of sleep as brainwaves dictate that. There CAN be correlations, but it's not consistent.
Again, I really cannot overstate this, an app absolutely CANNOT track your sleep accurately, or even badly. I don't care who says otherwise, it's a total load of shit.
Most of those figures are based off one or two sensors at best and are the equivalent of 'guesswork based on averages of other people'.
But of course they are charging you a monthly fee FOR A FUCKING MATTRESS COVER, so they are going to tell you any BS you want to hear to convince you otherwise. It's so so easy to flub data that makes you think you are sleeping better than you are; it's simplistic social engineering to generate a very expensive placebo. This is like scamming 101.
If you pay this much, and keep paying this much for a mattress, it's stupid tax. i.e. you pay more for dumb things the dumber you are. This is a product for exceptionally stupid and gullible people; and rich evidently.
Edit: I'm not calling James stupid, I don't disagree that the cooling helps. He doesn't seem to know the thing about how temperature, the body and sleep works. For instance, your room should be about 16 degrees celcius, so reasonably cold. Your core body temperature needs to drop about 1-2 degrees C to trigger 'sleepiness', so having a warm shower before bed opens up your blood vessels, then going into a cold room/bed drops your temperature and helps trick your body easier into getting tired.
But the app is still a glorified temperature switch and nothing more. You are paying a monthly fee for an over complicated thermostat on an overpriced mattress toper.
It just sucks because you can see the app has convinced James more than anything else - and it's the most bullshit part of the whole product other than the price. He got scammed, and worse, he fell for it. I think this is one of your worst videos James, I wish you would have consulted experts that AREN'T AFFILIATED with the product to get a more objective take on this. There are a 1001 other things James could have done to improve his sleep, rather than spend thousands on this shit. One of those things could have been actual scientific research.

@@dabd8175No no, that's the thing; I literally DO understand the thing - which is why I know it's BS.
I know the science, I did the work. It is NOT possible, not because I don't know how - but because it's physically impossible to transmit the tiny tiny tiny electrical signals given off by your brain through a non-conductive mattress (or an app no less) and not electrical wires with VERY good contact directly onto the scalp.
Just going to casually also remind you I know the mattress is no able to conduct because it contains water...and is connected to a power source. I'll let you connect the dots there.
I've applied the cables, straps and machines that monitor this stuff on hundreds of patients.
I've also done the same with CPAP machines. I've also had to repair both, which requires in-depth knowledge of how and why they work.
i'm VERY keenly aware of how this stuff works.
Just to be clear, incase you somehow forgot this (being that you claim to be a sleep technician); you would also know that part of the job requires reading multiple rows of brain waves to determine what stage of sleep someone is in (because AGAIN, it requires many leads and data points to accurately determine this - if it didn't, a more efficient means would be used by professional technicians, wouldn't they?), usually with reports every 20 minutes over a night shift. Which a human must do, not just because AI still can't, but because quality control measures require several stages of checks by external parties to ensure the results are accurate.
It has to be accurate, because this is a medical field; a persons sleep or lack there of DRASTICALLY effects their lives, usually severely so. Not just stress levels, but weight gain, overall cognitive ability, mood, energy levels, immune system effectiveness and life expectancy. Pretty much everything - you spend 1/3 of your life asleep, that impacts the waking 2/3 in multiple substantial ways.
And thus anyone doing this in a less than accurate and professional way would be literally putting people's lives at risk.
But again, if you were a tech, you would know this and also be speaking out against obvious fraudulent science like this mattress app.
If you were really a sleep tech that is.

I find it odd a 'fellow sleep tech' wouldn't be promoting alternatives like not having any caffeine within 8 hours of sleep (and no more than 2-3 cups a day), no heavy meals close to bed, no alcohol close to sleep, regular exercise, no smoking, weight loss, stress reducing exercises (like journaling before bed to empty the mind or meditating to reduce overall stress) and no light or noise in the room weren't strongly encouraged over spending several thousand dollars and a subscription fee for an over-engineered piece of fabric.

You're entertaining informative and inspiring James thank you. But I can't agree with the recommendation of a 2,5k matress when we have our extremities that are little heat exchangers so if you need to cool down peak a cheeky extremity out of the duvet -- a foot, a hand maybe both hey -- and you'll get the required cooling. Having more devices that suck your mind out of your eye holes has its own downsides. And it looks like you would have gotten those great sleep scores anyway (good luck in July lol) proving that if you're already sleeping well this will make a minimum difference. And if you dont sleep well there are a pethora of free things you can try that should be tried before spending money.
Do wanna emphasize though: thank you for the great and entertaining video.

Is it really silent? I had a competitor product for a trial, but the compressor was way too loud for me. They marketed the noise as "white noise" but it was like sleeping with a fridge. It also didn't work too well when it was 35C outside (and aircon not common in the UK).

Here’s a question for you! How do you think using that nightly when you’re home will affect you when you travel? Would be interesting to see a follow up, say, after you spent a week away on holiday (not that you’ll be able to afford a holiday for years, between the baby costs, mattress purchase & subscriptions 😂) letting us know how your sleep was when you’re ‘deprived’ of the thermal regulation after becoming accustomed to having it.

  • @ruleofones
    @ruleofones 3 місяці тому

I had the Pod for 2 weeks and found it to be somewhat uncomfortable because I like a cold room, but this felt lke something was jsut making my skin cold. As I adjusted it throughout the 2 weeks to get it to a comfortable level, I ended up bringing it to nearly a neutral temperature, which was where my mattress was in the first place. Because of the price, that slight marginal change wasn't worth it to me, and I began to wonder if everything is just a gimmick. Seeing this video adds to my suspicion that maybe I need to give it another try down the road, one more time.

What exactly is the subscription for, I get it's for the app, but what exactly.
Can't you use the whole thing anymoer if you let your subscription run out?
Or is it just for the sleep surveillance data?

  • @Barbarian75

  • @IBradFrazer
    @IBradFrazer 3 місяці тому +5

It has a cost of $2,500, you have to pay a subscription to use it/keep using it, there is no way the app can accurately track your sleep data like that, and the software/hardware will likely stop working if the company were to ever go out of business, which is a possibility because you'd have to be insane to buy this product. I'mma pass on this one.

    Tl;dr - buy an 8 sleep
I have severe hayfever, and due to my hayfever, run extremely warm and for years (10yrs+) i was trying to thermal regulate with fans, air con etc.
I took the hit, bought the 8 sleep and have it on 13 degrees celcious all night until time for wake up where it warms up.
I went from 55-65 sleep scores (OURA ring, apple watch) and between 4-6 hrs to now, over 85+ consistently and over 7hrs+ sleep.
    Been a life changer...

The idea that he finds being in a cold room and being warm under blankets mental is funny to me. I live in New England, and my best sleeps always come in the winter when I turn the heat down (just on enough so the pipes don't freeze) and break out the comforter.

2 year warranty. They have two subscription models - expensive and very expensive. If you choose the very expensive one (and keep it) warranty is extended to 5 years (but you also end pay around 50% or more of the initial product price in subscription fee over the 5 years.
I have the 8sleep Pod 3 cover with the very expensive subscription. I love the cover but hate the subscription model.
