DJI foiled all the competition again when Mini 3 & 4 came with radically new designs. Everyone else was trying to add features to Mini 2 design. Only DJI knew it was maxed out since you couldn't cool a processor doing that much work without an electromechanical fan, and boom - you're over 250 grams. Remember Hubsan Mini Pro? You couldn't use all features at the same time... overheating. Thats where Mini 3 Pro and Mini 4 Pro cooling the internals by PUSHING AIR into the body with rear props solved the problem- but created another. They had to be weirdly angled and close to the back, blocking rear obstacle avoidance (the "vents" near rear hinges aren't. They are cool air intakes. Problem solved, by putting the rear sensors in the front; pointing rearward. Not just solutions. Simple, elegant ones, that didn't break weight rules. Propulsion, Processing, Obstacle Avoidance teams, all collaborating like mofos
I was thinking about this too, I wonder if it's because DJI is so far ahead everything seems like a cheaper copy. Or is it because these companies can only afford so much R&D because they don't have the income, since we all end up going DJI in the end. OR is it simply because they are cheap knockoffs of the best and they aren't really trying to go for the DJI market, but more so the budget market. Whatever it is, we do need a true competitor to emerge, preferably one that doesn't start with S!

Once I got used to the controls, the drone flew great. I’ve flown it a few times since recording this and it performs like a champ. The signal strength is surprising and the footage while you’re flying is really decent. The only bad footage is the sudden stops and starts but other than that I liked it. Thanks for watching, man. I had started out with a Holystone 720 I believe. I let my wife fly it once and she never wanted to fly one ever again lol! But this little drone was actually surprising. It was much more stable than other drones, and I think with a different wind speed, you may have different outcomes. However, the video transmission was lagging, which is normal, the latency between the controller and the drone is what you come to expect with a holystone, and it has the typical hard landings, and when you were in sport mode, and it landed on it's own, I was wondering when that was going to happen LOL! But the picture quality is much improved, a little contrast and saturation, and it would look better, but it's decent. I do believe what you are looking at on the bottom of the drone, however, may be a light. Mine had one and I thought it was a sensor as well. Thank you so much for the honor of naming the mini killer series, it's probably my favorite on UA-cam, although now it definitely has to be LOL. God bless you guys!
lol holy stone has come a long way but they do have a ways to go still. I really enjoyed flying this drone and I thought it did pretty good. I’ve flown it a few times since this video, too and have gotten more used to the sticks. It’s a different feel than DJI for sure and it’s not a mini killer by any stretch of the imagination, but it still did really well. I’m glad you liked the mini killer series reference and just remember, all these mini killer videos will be dedicated to JJ drones. lol.

Oh yea the Potensic is an awesome little drone. I should do a follow up on that one, eh? I did think this one did pretty good with the EIS though. It was definitely a lot better footage than I expected. Did the colors seem a bit flat? I noticed it was a little darker than the GoPro footage when it flipped back and forth. Either way, they definitely improved on the older model. Once I get used to the controls it flew good, too. The sticks are just a bit stiff. lol. Maybe they loosen up over time.

I’m not sure what the proper terminology is for the footage but what you said. Hahaha. I did think the EIS they used made a huge difference in the video stability and I really do like how it handles. It took a bit for me to get used to the stiffness of the controls but once I did, it was good. I’ve flown a few times since making this video and each time I get used to it quicker. lol. Not a bad drone overall and the 50% off discount would help for sure. I think it’s a little overpriced at regular price though. I’m hoping they add a gimbal on the next version. lol I don’t think we have any family buried in there but you never know. Hahaha. This drone has a compass calibration but I don’t think it has the IMU calibration. It also has a geomagnetrometersupercalifragilisticexpealidocious calibration I think but I don’t know how it’s spelled.

Dang that sucks. I didn’t have any issues with the pairing on this one. It said it can take up to 40 seconds but it didn’t take that long once I got the battery put in the drone right. lol. I’d say they’ve come a long way since back then. I know this one isn’t a mini killer, but it did well I thought. I just wish they’d put a gimbal on it! lol

Oh I definitely get that. I really don’t know why they didn’t put a simple gimbal on it. They did do a good job with the EIS though so when you’re flying smoothly the footage seems great. It’s the starting and stopping that really sucks. It really does amaze me how much difference a gimbal makes on drones. Maybe next time they’ll add it, eh?

Would be better with good optical flow and without ( or disabled GPS) and with a simple small Wifi controller and maybe screen. Because then it's a nice fast to launch pocket drone that doesn't have a fragile gimbal. Now you have to wait minutes to connect and wait for satellites. Drone manufacturers (and reviewers) just fail to understand how people use drones in real life. Take for example the Neo. Why isn't there a cheap small controller for optical flow mode?
That’s a really cool idea, man. I seriously thought the EIS did a really good job with the video stabilization. It was cool how smooth it seemed when I was flying straight. The only bad footage I saw was from the sudden starting and stopping. Other than that, it was decent. Maybe a little washed out compared to the GoPro footage but still good.
@@WeretheRoberts It's an SJRC F5 version of course. Holy Clone doesn't make drones. Only higher prices. What they do is claim the rights of an existing model and then have the factory put their name on. Maybe sometimes they have requests to change it a little bit? Such as add Remote ID. That I don't know. But they're not a drone manufacturer. Most they sell is SJRC. F11, F22, F5, F7. In the US people don't seem to mind paying twice as much on Amazon for a 'fake brand' product if they can send it back. But if you can get this drone for $150 or so it isn't bad. Like I said not having a fragile gimbal can be more practical if you quickly want to grab the drone. Trust me, if you're on a bike riding 100 km a day you are not going to spend half an hour on a 3 second video or photo. You just ride on and forget about it. What you want is something you can launch instantly. That means a cheap optical flow drone with small WiFi controller and SD card. So that you don't have to mess with a phone. Now I don't have a DJI Mini with smart controller so I can't tell how fast you can get it in the air. I haven't seen a video of someone actually show it with a stopwatch. Maybe it's an idea for you? Which drone is fastest to launch? If it is as cheap drone that can take a good quality 1080p photo then it's already fine for the job. Just see it as boomerang camera. You take it out of your pocket, gyro calibration, fly it 20 meters, point shoot, fly it back. All within 20 seconds. And that is one reason why the HoverAir and Neo are a big success. Plus their follow feature of course. But manual control with the phone sucks. I would never buy the Neo without controller. Question is, if I do use the controller will it still be fast to launch? If not we're back to square one and it takes minutes to get it in the air. So if you forget about the follow feature and only want something for a quick selfie photo for Facebook, a cheap $60 could actually work better.
No Mini killer, let me emphasize that IT IS NOT A MINI KILLER, far from it Kevin (in my humble opinion). Aerial footage was ok, I guess. At least the stability seemed quite good, but it looked to me to be an exceptionally calm day with no wind. Is there a U.S. drone manufacturing company? I thought we had one somewhere. If you could find a made in the USA drone to test as a “mini killer” that’d be interesting. 👍🏼👍🏼💜👍🏼👍🏼

Looks to me that it's a wash. The Mini 2 is clearly superior. That thing just dropped and bounced on the road on you. I'm on my third Mini 2 and the crashes I had that forced replacements was my fault or the result of third party add on's. Holystone has a lot of work to do if they want to even match DJI.

I would love to try these dji alternatives. I haven't really looked into them because of the whole using the phone as a screen. But then I got to thinking, can I use an old iPad or iPad mini? I believe in healthy competition to keep companies innovating, so a real competitor to DJI would be awesome. Not what the S word is trying right now, that's just straight garbage.
lol there’s definitely a bunch of alternatives out there but unfortunately none of them seem to be real competition at the moment. Holy stone seems to be on the right track and this drone did really well though for sure. The S word needs to earn their spot honestly rather than what they’re doing.

Yea that’s for sure. Ain’t no way DJI can be beat in today’s market and I doubt they’ll have any real competition in the near future. I’m not sure what the proper terminology is for the footage but what you said. Hahaha. I did think the EIS they used made a huge difference in the video stability and I really do like how it handles. It took a bit for me to get used to the stiffness of the controls but once I did, it was good. I’ve flown a few times since making this video and each time I get used to it quicker. lol. Not a bad drone overall and the 50% off discount would help for sure. I think it’s a little overpriced at regular price though. I’m hoping they add a gimbal on the next version. lol I don’t think we have any family buried in there but you never know. Hahaha. This drone has a compass calibration but I don’t think it has the IMU calibration. It also has a geomagnetrometersupercalifragilisticexpealidocious calibration I think but I don’t know how it’s spelled.

I had a Holystone drone a couple years ago I had to send it back because it wouldn’t pair with the remote.
Dang that sucks. I didn’t have any issues with the pairing on this one. It said it can take up to 40 seconds but it didn’t take that long once I got the battery put in the drone right. lol. I’d say they’ve come a long way since back then. I know this one isn’t a mini killer, but it did well I thought. I just wish they’d put a gimbal on it! lol

lol man that sucker almost got me. I would’ve showed the drones perspective of the near fatal collision but my expression was pretty weird. Haha. I tell you what, I use that power station a lot. Lately we’ve been doing slot of work cutting trees and burning stuff and I’ve been using it almost daily on the back porch to have a fan to cool off. It’s become really handy to not have to run an extension cord.

lol yea I thought the video quality was ok. Definitely a lot better than I was expecting with no gimbal. Honestly, the EIS did a really good job with the steadiness or whatever it’s called. I’m not a photographer obviously. Haha. Anyway, if it had a gimbal it would be even better so hopefully they address that in the future. I don’t have a name for this one yet by the way. Maybe harry since he’s a holy stone or Hank? I don’t know yet. lol.

7:49 again, DJI footage is way better yes it’s not bad but for me it’s a no based on that footage.
Oh I definitely get that. I really don’t know why they didn’t put a simple gimbal on it. They did do a good job with the EIS though so when you’re flying smoothly the footage seems great. It’s the starting and stopping that really sucks. It really does amaze me how much difference a gimbal makes on drones. Maybe next time they’ll add it, eh?

Would be better with good optical flow and without ( or disabled GPS) and with a simple small Wifi controller and maybe screen. Because then it's a nice fast to launch pocket drone that doesn't have a fragile gimbal. Now you have to wait minutes to connect and wait for satellites.
Drone manufacturers (and reviewers) just fail to understand how people use drones in real life. Take for example the Neo. Why isn't there a cheap small controller for optical flow mode?
That’s a really cool idea, man. I seriously thought the EIS did a really good job with the video stabilization. It was cool how smooth it seemed when I was flying straight. The only bad footage I saw was from the sudden starting and stopping. Other than that, it was decent. Maybe a little washed out compared to the GoPro footage but still good.
@@WeretheRoberts It's an SJRC F5 version of course. Holy Clone doesn't make drones. Only higher prices. What they do is claim the rights of an existing model and then have the factory put their name on. Maybe sometimes they have requests to change it a little bit? Such as add Remote ID. That I don't know. But they're not a drone manufacturer. Most they sell is SJRC. F11, F22, F5, F7. In the US people don't seem to mind paying twice as much on Amazon for a 'fake brand' product if they can send it back.
But if you can get this drone for $150 or so it isn't bad. Like I said not having a fragile gimbal can be more practical if you quickly want to grab the drone. Trust me, if you're on a bike riding 100 km a day you are not going to spend half an hour on a 3 second video or photo. You just ride on and forget about it. What you want is something you can launch instantly. That means a cheap optical flow drone with small WiFi controller and SD card. So that you don't have to mess with a phone. Now I don't have a DJI Mini with smart controller so I can't tell how fast you can get it in the air. I haven't seen a video of someone actually show it with a stopwatch. Maybe it's an idea for you? Which drone is fastest to launch? If it is as cheap drone that can take a good quality 1080p photo then it's already fine for the job. Just see it as boomerang camera. You take it out of your pocket, gyro calibration, fly it 20 meters, point shoot, fly it back. All within 20 seconds.
And that is one reason why the HoverAir and Neo are a big success. Plus their follow feature of course. But manual control with the phone sucks. I would never buy the Neo without controller. Question is, if I do use the controller will it still be fast to launch? If not we're back to square one and it takes minutes to get it in the air. So if you forget about the follow feature and only want something for a quick selfie photo for Facebook, a cheap $60 could actually work better.
No Mini killer, let me emphasize that IT IS NOT A MINI KILLER, far from it Kevin (in my humble opinion). Aerial footage was ok, I guess. At least the stability seemed quite good, but it looked to me to be an exceptionally calm day with no wind. Is there a U.S. drone manufacturing company? I thought we had one somewhere. If you could find a made in the USA drone to test as a “mini killer” that’d be interesting. 👍🏼👍🏼💜👍🏼👍🏼

Looks to me that it's a wash. The Mini 2 is clearly superior. That thing just dropped and bounced on the road on you. I'm on my third Mini 2 and the crashes I had that forced replacements was my fault or the result of third party add on's. Holystone has a lot of work to do if they want to even match DJI.
lol I hear what you’re saying. There’s really no true competition for DJI at the moment except for our government and customs. I thought this one did pretty well though and I enjoyed flying it. It had a couple of issues, too as you mentioned. lol. The mini 2 is absolutely the best drone I’ve ever flown and probably ever will fly. I like your style. Haha
I dont think the vid quality is as good as DJI Mini series. I have a Mini 2, and that has a better quality. of course, bang for the buck is a differentiator.

I would love to try these dji alternatives. I haven't really looked into them because of the whole using the phone as a screen. But then I got to thinking, can I use an old iPad or iPad mini?
I believe in healthy competition to keep companies innovating, so a real competitor to DJI would be awesome. Not what the S word is trying right now, that's just straight garbage.
lol there’s definitely a bunch of alternatives out there but unfortunately none of them seem to be real competition at the moment. Holy stone seems to be on the right track and this drone did really well though for sure. The S word needs to earn their spot honestly rather than what they’re doing.
