Why Hip Hop Doesn't Respect Eminem Anymore

  • Across all industries, it’s natural that the most popular export is always going to catch a degree of flak from fans who misinterpret respecting success as a mark against your taste. Yet in recent years, it seems that the disdain for Eminem has gone beyond being ‘too cool’ to admit fandom and veered into disrespect. Now, hip-hop’s perception of Em has mutated to the point where he’s now as discredited as he is celebrated.

@MyBeautifulDarkTwistedSilentPlanet Depends. The Marshall Mathers LP is on that level, and so is The Eminem Show. Eminem also is a WAY better rapper than Kanye. They are worlds apart when it comes to that. Kanye makes better MUSIC. But remember “rap” stands for RHYME and POETRY. Eminem fits that. Kanye does not

I used to be an em fan, big listener from relapse to mmlp2, later enjoying MtbMB but I gotta be completely real
This last year I've been branching out in hip hop and listening to folks like cole JID and greater dreamville, Kdot, jack Harlow, fuck even stuff like zel and mac, but the more I listen to other hip hop the more I realise em just isn't great, his lyricism is insane as is his diction, but his flow is stagnant, there's no soul in it at all it's all just this samey "bullets from a mag" da da da da da flow and as a result there's just no depth in his work
On the one hand I'm sad since I loved em and I feel like I've watched a hero die, but on the other I have so much better music around nowadays

@@ImMimicute Respect to your opinion, and here's mine: yes, nowadays there are some good songs and singers here and there in hip hop, but if we talk about consistency, the highs that Em reached, still are very rarely reached, especially for a white rapper. Em is probably the only one, that African-Americans accept and support in the raw of the best ones, as far as I know. And there's another thing: I was not a hip hop fan, but Em made me listen to this music for some period of time, and because of him, I enjoyed to listen to some other good hip hop performers. Some of my friends too. And we are not the only ones, as far as I read in the forums and comments. In other words, Em made many people, who don't listen to hip hop in principle, to become fans of it, because of him. 🙂

    • @DorianaGray
      @DorianaGray 4 місяці тому

@@ImMimicute In my opinion, consistency means much - many singers can shine with a good song or a good performance, but it's harder to maintain the high level for months or years. That's why I said, nowadays many singers have good songs and performances here and there, but after that they fade, for a time, or in principle. Only few can do what Em did, he managed to stay on the top for years (of course with the support of Dr Dre and some others). That defines the difference between "one hit wonders" and the top performers.

Rap has changed so much since Em's hay-day. You can get absolutely eaten alive in a diss like Killshot but that then boosts your own career. That's why the Game flip-flopped, he saw that he could profit from it.
New generations won't listen to old artists unless their style is continued. As far as rapping goes, Eminem is the most skilled, but his personaility is what made him famous. Unfortunately, Em's early 2000s antics would be cancelled if translated into modern society.

The problem is that Em was hungry and in pain when we were introduced to Slim Shady. The music was fueled by depression, addiction, isolation, and regret. That was him at his most raw. But now, he's grown. His family has grown. He's able to provide for those he loves. He's gone into rehab. He's gone through therapy. Expecting him to tap back into the old Em would be like asking him to invite all his demons back in so we can get a great record. It's not gonna happen. Just like Cube ain't the No Vaseline dude anymore and Nas is talking about brunch instead of ether, Em has moved into the realm of grown men with things to lose. To expect him to dredge up that old pain just so you can get the final album of your dreams is unrealistic.

Em is stuck in a “Damned if you do, damned if you don’t” limbo. There are worse places to be when you’re one of the most successful artists of all time with a beloved back catalogue, but as a songwriter it’s hard to think that you can’t just write something without it being vehemently dissected. And towards these criticisms you’re either getting hounded at for being a pushover if you don’t retaliate, or you get labeled bitter and sensitive if you do.
There’s no winning for em at this point, but what does that matter when he’s won so much already?

I agree, well said! I feel at this point, Em is so technical with his rhymes, that it flies over a lot of our heads. And he admits, he has an addictive personality, so he replaced his drug habit with making these amazing technical rhymes. That's his addiction now.
And unfortunately, those kinds of songs won't see much radio or club play. I personally loved Em during the Bennzino and early 50 Cent days, that was my favorite version of Em. But as a true fan and recovering addict, I'm very happy for Em and where he is now in life. If I have to listen to technical Em, but know he's sober, I'm good with that.
Considering where 50 and Em both are in there lives, I'd love to see a collab album. They both done care about numbers no more, so it would be dope to hear, but problem is we will never get hungry 50 cent ever again. Go back and listen to Power of a Dollar and you'll know what I mean.

I think people need to remember that Eminem doesn't even need to make music anymore if he wanted to. The guy is already filthy rich and set for the rest of his life. He still makes music because he loves music. He loves rap. He loves hip-hop. I honestly don't think there is any music artist out there who loves the game more than him. While people are out here trying to "diss" or "call out" Eminem, he doesn't respond to the drama in words, but with lyrics, and he will always come out on top.

I've always said that Em actually pays too much attention to his fanbase. That's a breath of fresh air in hip hop but it's too extreme. Like relapse was what he wanted to do but then it got huge backlash for the accents and it was considered too much rap so he slowed it down on Recovery with his normal voice and pop hooks to make it more globally accessible. Then his fans complained about missing the old Em and not the new serious Em so he did MMLP 2 ( actually a very good album) but again that was him doing what the fans wanted more than what he really wanted then people complained about Em not being political enough so he does revival Everyone hates it and says he should just go back to straight rapping in comes kamikaze but then they complained that kamikaze was too rap rappy so he did MTBMB that has both the mainstream stuff and the heavy rap stuff
He should just lock himself in the studio and really do the album HE wants to do. I kinda feel like that's what he did on side B a little bit but he should do it all the way. Killshot that was Em totally wanting to do that his way which is why it felt much better than most of his other stuff around that time. I remember Tyler the creator saying that about Em too. That he was paying too much attention to his fans. You have the biggest fanbase on the face of the earth you're not going to be able to please them all.

It became the one thing it tried to avoid, and that is become pop culture itself. I remember Snoop Dogg was going on Twitter asking the rap community why don't old rappers get respect unlike in rock where older musicians still get the praise and recognition. It's ridiculous that things have turned this way. Eminem is, objectively, an astonishing rapper. I enjoy writing out and studying the lyrics of rappers and then seeing how they use sounds, slant rhymes, allusions, assonance, consonance, etc to formulate poetic stories.
Eminem is consistently amazing. I personally think he is getting better with age. His production isn't always memorable but his lyrics and flow is.
Hating on him is hating on the craft. If you're gonna do it, I will listen but I want a real, sensible reason that has to do with his ability itself and not his "place in the culture".
No fucking way I would look at Willie Mays and say "He's ok but he's a guest in the house of baseball" just because he didn't match skin color of the games inventors. He deserves to be in every conversation about the GOAT. So does Em. And I think, deep down, everybody knows it.

Ok so What’s crazy is that EMINEM is succeeding in every single way AFTER Revival, his numbers in the streaming Era (In which he ain’t a part of btw), his music still going viral within the Youth in apps like TikTok. Being induced in the Hall of Fame and Performing in the SuperBowl. When it comes to beef, thing is Eminem has ALWAYS respected others first, people like budden and the game are examples of old men… especially the game, who was so very desperate to get a response from him. Also budden was wrong, Eminem was referring to “Forever” not renegade. People forget Mgk made comments about his underage daughter and started dissing Eminem first. And if we watch his history when it comes to actual rap beefs, it’s other rappers that say something first. Not him.
Now when it comes credibility in rap, while Revival was a L as he said it himself, tho it had many great heartfelt personal songs but pretty much his Stans have come back when Kamikaze dropped and MTBMB. To the point many are so very much intrigued what his next album is going to be because it seems he’s fully motivated and serious about trying to push his pen to the next level in terms of being a GOATED Writer that nobody can ever replicate. He’s dealt with critics his whole life, but it says a lot about how Eminem now is at a point where when he finally acknowledged Fantano lol he basically said “oh yeah he always gives me bad grades” to his Shady Records artists Westside Boogie for reassurance. Compare that response to someone like drake who actually got offended and even texted dude for the bad rating💀 Eminem now is Fully comfortable with his art.
Eminem is such an interesting artist because you think after all the memes (he’s always mocked himself) hate, dis-credibility by every person imaginable. The man is Still not giving up and is proving everyone wrong.
I do believe Hip-Hop will miss him dearly if he were to go away, especially after all the good things he’s done personally for the genre.
Regardless He himself likes a little bit of a challenge anyways and he’ll stop on his own accord. + the man who’s 50 now mind you still dropping bangers :))

Hip Hop does respect Em. Some just don't think he's a GOAT and/or the type of artist you blast in your car and/or at a club. A lot of the shots that were taken at him were for clout and some were valid but also said for clout. Some of the shots come from jealousy or hate.
Now Snoop taking shots at em only to drop a dope track with him was from personal issues, jealousy type shit. Game straight up was tryna sell his album, Em never acknowledged him.
