Wow thank you so much for your time in making this! So informative. We grew potatoes last summer for the first time without any research and it didn’t go well. 😂 This is really helpful! Love the “God is good” at the end. He sure is.

Your potatoes look great! This is how my mom always did it too ( minus the straw.)
Planted mine just 10 days after you and hoping to have a bountiful harvest, although maybe not quite 275lbs!! My family is still young 😂
Thank you for sharing great, practical information RuthAnn!

My grandma had about a 3/4 acre garden in PA. I'm sure she had learned much of what you are teaching through years of experience. She was definitely NOT patient enough to teach anyone anything. In fact, she was kind of grouchy. So, I learned some things today and I am grateful for what you teach so patiently.

This is the fismrst channel about homesteading I ever watch and I'm so inspired.
I'm a Medical Doctor by training ; from North Africa. I graduated last year but I'm taking a sabbatical and preparing to get married and move with my Korean husband to Germany.
Medicine is a passion of mine but since 2020, I'm more and more disenchanted with my field. Which allowed me to widen my interests.
I'll probably still work and try to do my best to help as a doctor but if push comes to shove, I pray my husband and I will be able to sustain our future family and survive even if partly excluded from modern society.
I think your channel will be a great resource ❤ thank you so much for sharing. I'll make a homestead "just in case" notebook 😂

Another tip to stop rotting, is to let the potato sit for a day after cutting before planting. It 'scabs' over. We have very little molding.

I started nipping off the flowers soon as they appear since, like garlic, flowers waste energy that could go to the 'fruit'. And it worked, we had loads of huge potatoes this year. Only time you'd save the flowers is if you're into breeding potato varieties. Like yours, the soil was shallow in our potato area so we did one hilling then later added lots of straw for a 2nd.

I'll have to look at mine today and see if there's any blossoms. Thank you for another awesome, informative video! If no blossoms I'm hilling today.

WOW, that's a lot of potatoes. Are you selling them at farmer's market or canning for your family's food storage?

@@Ruthannzimm 🍓If you divide 275 lbs by 52 weeks and then by 7 people, that's only 3/4 lb per person per week. Is that enough for the year, RuthAnn, or do you end up buying some at the store? 🍓 Also, how many months do they last in cold storage, without going bad?

This was so helpful!! We mulched potatoes growing up but never really hilled. My potatoes have been sloooow to blossom. I have a few plants that have. Does continuing to hill delay that? I hilled mine a LOT because 99% had no blooms yet. Someone else told me that potatoes don't have to bloom to grow potatoes? Thank you for all your helpful tutoring through these videos!

The blossoms just mean that the plant has reached maturity.. once the plant is mature it takes the energy from the foliage down into the roots/potatoes.
