Never forget why we fought, and the sacrifices made for freedom and democracy.

    • @dt6822

Freedom and democracy are not mutually supporting ideas. The notion that the broader public interest is always served with a democratically elected government is a myth. A democracy always serves the interests of the elite few who can pay off the politicians. Democracy is a perfect system by which special interests and foreign governments can puppeteer a powerful nation like the US, for example. All of US foreign policy today is evaluated on the basis of which foreign country pays more lobbyists to influence the Congress on any given issue.

While the world was watching British and US Involvement in WW2 for the 80th. Untold , be the British wrote the history and forgot the Indian front of World War II are often drowned in silence. However, Indian involvement in WWII spanned the scope of the world, and caused many negative impacts within the subcontinent as well.. With over two and a half million Indian soldiers serving in WWII, the Indian army became the largest volunteer army in history (including my father in the war effort in Malaya and Burma. My Dad said, Britain absndoned the Indians. He said the Australian and NZs were the campions in the Pacific holding off Japan. In addition to these soldiers, billions and billions of pounds were borrowed by the British from India to be used on war expenses. In many ways, it is apparent that without Indian involvement in WWII, the Allies would not have been strong enough to sustain their wins against their enemies. Unfortunately, this is a story that many have chosen to forget. The British did not recognize the Indian people who fought for them during this time, and in India too, these stories are quickly fading from the collective memory. We forget the brutal and horrible dropping of the USA on Hiroshima and Nagasaki killing Millions in Japan. We shall NOT forget the Other Commonwealth Nations and India. It is about time the truth be said and thanks given.

We're not far off from the time when the last living voices of those who fought and bled on D-Day will no longer be with us, so we have a special obligation. We cannot let what happened here be lost in the silence of the years to come. The fact that they were heroes here that day does not absolve us of what we have do today. Democracy is not guaranteed. Every generation must preserve it, defend it and fight for it. In memory of those who fought here, died here and literally saved the world here, let us be worthy of their sacrifice.
