After the success of For ever Fortune, early music from Scotland, François Lazarevitch continues his exploration of the ‘Celtic’ repertories with a new programme devoted to early Irish music. This repertory of old airs from the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries consists of dances, songs in Gaelic and varied instrumental pieces: they tell tales of wars, of love, of strong drink and tobacco, of children and bards. A leading specialist in the flute and bagpipe families, François Lazarevitch opens out new horizons of colours and sounds. He has gathered around him here a number of distinguished performers of early music (including the fabulous Baroque violinist and fiddler David Greenberg) and invited the American tenor Robert Getchell, who cuts a very credible figure as a singer going back to his roots.

In Scotland this tune is known as '' When she came ben she bobbit''. Some verses were written to it called '' The Laird of Cockpen'' , which was rewritten by the poet Robert Burns.

This is my favourite Irish CD...it does not get boring, I can't wait to learn and play all these tunes myself. They are both intelligent and musical. I never liked James Galway playing Irish music, but these pro musicians are true to the tradition and bring something extra - that they were eager to do this Irish after recording the entire flute sonatas of JS Bach and saw a comparison is an eye opener as to the history of Irish music...Francois Lazarevitch speaks of backpacking around Ireland joining in the music when he was younger...

I started playing flute a few months ago, and I've been learning some Celtic tunes.
This performance both inspires me and depresses me, but I'll keep working hard.

The best that I've ever heard Irish music played.
Great piece. I Want to get a decent wooden flute like that. Is is some sort of baroque flute. Pardon my ignorance. Mainly a harp player but have played Celtic tunes on harp and all keys of whistles for over 30 years but can never figure out these different wooden flutes. I have a decent bamboo flute in G from Erik the Flutemaker and it fine but I would like to buy one good flute so I can play this one note for note.

Lovely. I'm disappointed that a lot of Alpha's releases aren't available for digital purchase on Amazon. I'd be interested in both of the albums mentioned (and Nevermind's Conversations), but most of my music is on the Amazon platform these days for convenience. I hardly ever buy physical CDs anymore.

This is really great performance!
But what makes me curious as an engineer is how they manage to hide the mics and still get such a great sound... It is so rich and detailed that I'm even close to conclusion that it was not actually recorded at the same time with video, but who knows.
