- Heyyyy,
After getting a couple of messages asking how to get a grade 9 in GCSE ART or asking what to write in artist research or when annotating your own work.
I decided to break it down and tell you easy tips to improving your GCSE sketchbook, giving examples from my own sketchbooks so you get the grades you deserve!!
Although remember, art is subjective & grades don’t determine whether you are good at something!! Especially in art when the analysis of work counts for so much of the mark.
Hope you enjoy!!
Maisie xxx
After a lot of people asking how to write ARTIST RESEARCH and ANNOTATIONS, I've created an IN DEPTH video with everything you need to know to get a GRADE 9. LINK TO THE VIDEO ...

also THANK YOU SO MUCH for all the love on this video xxx
Thanks your such an inspiration
Pulls up her year 8 art: this is horrible
Me: that is better than any piece of art I’ve ever done😳
she's like I'm not naturally talented, pulls up sweet page, me, looks at my sweet page, damn it yes u r!
Exactly what I was thinking
i am confused weather I should mention this or not 😬😅 but your username is *April fools*.....if you know what you mean😅😅😆😆
IK it scared me
This is so helpful, just started year 11 and I am a messs
Kat H don’t worry I was the same, you’ll do great I’m sure xxx
Lmao me too 😅
Honestly same, I scrapped all my work and now I’ve got till December to do two years worth of work 😶😂
Me too and it’s due in like no time and I’m having a bloody heart attack oh jesus help
Lol same I'm so behind on my coursework for art and design technology

enigma possibly my fave comment ever ahahah
But don't become old Picasso didn't grow up good
If you don't believe me Google it😅😅😆😆
This video was acc really good. I got a grade 9 this year!!! But I think this is one of the most practical and accurate video about getting a high grade in it
saarah hosseinian thank you, well done xx
saarah hosseinian I got a 7, didnt really know about any of these tips and stuff. We weren’t allowed to trace either. Well done on your 9 :)
I REGRET TAKING ART OMD
beauty guru intros such a mood ahaha
Big. Fat. Mood.
I don't. It's easy and simple. I don't have to do that much and relax
ME TOO
@@giuliaasantana same omg I'm so bad at it. my grade is a 3 and it just makes me so sad
I don’t know why I’m watching this is don’t take art lol
Tanisha Grays must be nice knowing you don’t have to go through the stress of art GCSE ahaha
I laughed at this whys this me
Me too
love your profile pic btw
same i just find it interesting
I'm regretting taking art GCSE and I haven't even had my first art lessons as I started school yesterday. I don't do well with stress and I hate my art so I'm just really scared as it looks like a lot of work
Miles Scarlett it looks like a lot of work but you get set tasks week by week so as long as you stay on track it won’t be too stressful!! I’m sure you’ll do great xxx
Perhaps consider switching? I too am considering a switch, because I didn't take a creative subject and I m atdssed about that. And i might switch to art. If you're really unhappy perhaps look into something else? First, check if you need Art GCSE to be what you any to be
Im in Yr 11 and yes it is a lot of stress if you don't keep on top of your work do it week by week and if you have extra time do some more art work! You'll be great
@@adaozoo I'm a month in, and I'm thinking of switching to Art. I've missed a ton of work. What is art like?
Is it bad not to take a creative subject? I might switch to drama if it is. I was gonna do art but I don't think I can, they have covered much work already it'll be hard to catch up.
I hope you enjoy DT more
thank you! i'm in y10 currently and i really want to get a 9 in my final exams
Maisie: yOu DoNt HaVe To Be GoOd At DrAwInG
Also maisie: *draws like Vincent Vangoh *
Faith Francis AHAHAH I love this xx
I’m doing art gcse and your year 8 one is better than me😂😭
My art lessons consisted of us going in and out of the cupboard for a chat. But also the teacher would get stressed and cry and everyone was in a bad mood. No one really did any work. But we all passed. And I got an A was it worth it?
Haha. No
Ashleigh Gordon I feel this
this is the most beneficial video i have ever watched you are a literal life saver you don’t even understand how helpful this is x
Tilly Harris omg this comment has made me so happy!! I’m so glad xxx
@@MaisieCromptonn what's your Instagram? I need to ask for help on different projects
a tip for tracing, cover the back of your printed picture in graphite, place your picture on top of a plain piece of paper and gently trace the outline of the printed picture
Holly Louise yes!! A few people did that, and it worked well xx
Maisie Crompton it’s something I do if I’m struggling or if I’m just lazy xx
Holly Louise ahh a bit like monoprinting
I do not regret taking art gcse. I am very fortunate to have a laid back teacher and I would be considered by people to be skilled in art.
My teacher doesn't even care about layout. He actually prefers it if you don't do backgrounds. He just wants you to do actual good art.
This is so unbelievably helpful. I’ve just gone into y11 and I’m panicking because I know I have so much to do while not having a clue how to approach it. This video just made my life so much less stressful
Martha Harmon omg!! This is so nice to hear!! Thank you xxx
Martha Harmon and good luck, I’m sure you’ll do great xx
i’m currently in year 9 and just chose art as my gcse and i’m so scared already omg 🤣
Spilling the Tae you’ll do great, the work load is quite a lot but you’ll find the time - good luck xxx
Maisie Crompton thank you ❤️
Same, our first topic is still life and everyone else looked like they knew what they were doing and i was so confused😂
You’ll be fine. I was scared starting out too
Oof, I chose in year 8
Your sketchbook actually looks so amazing 😢 we’re not allowed to do anything like yours, I’m in year 11 and our sketchbooks literally look the same as our year 9 ones, no variation in page layouts or anything 😭x
Lily Grace why don’t u just do work at home and redo pages more creatively?
i’ve been in year 10 for exactly a month only, and i already regret taking art
we need a sketchbook tour
Royal Pixie people have been asking for this!! Just don’t know if it will be too repetitive and boring xx
Maisie Crompton It won’t be boring at all. It is actually quite helpful for those of us who have picked art 😁
I just started year 11 and we are a WHOLE project behind because our teacher was off for about 7 weeks! The project we are just starting we were meant to finish at the end of year 10. My artist researched from year 10 were just a shamble 😂😂. You are an absolute babe for this omg ❤️❤️
Holli Summer oh that’s no good!! I’m sure you’ll get it done in time though - glad I could help, just ask if there’s anything else I can do xxx
I love the fact that she doesn't need a pink book x
This raised my heart rate by like 100bpm I’m dying, just started yr 11 and gonna die
buttercup flower If you have relatively good organisational skills and decently you’re good at art, then do it, but then again idk how long most ppl get to do coursework for, (I only had one term to do all my coursework). But organisation is sorta important for it
@TvT hows it going?
damn girl, you’re talented! No wonder you got an A* ! and your Year 8 work was amazing girl!!
Nesrin Isli omg thank you!!
Ugh I just started my art gcse a few weeks ago and my art is so much worse than at home. Its too much pressure and school has a negative effect on my work
Clash With Kritzl I totally feel you!! Can be hard sometimes with all the other work load from other subjects too!! Just try and enjoy as much of it as you can xx
Try taking your book home to do personal work! It can be really good
Your honestly so sweet , I can tell u genuinely want to help people like giving people the research pages info etc ...
This video really helped I’m in year 10 and the amount of coursework we get for art is a lotttt . Thank u this video really helped !
We are also told using an art book with a binder / ringed spine will get u a higher mark as u can attach material and layer stuff throughout your book by attaching with string ♥️
You’d make such a good art teacher!
Emily Foster ahhh thank you so much aha!! xx
Honestly, this is the best GCSE Art video I've seen.
Well done on your grade 9, you *ABSOLUTLY* deserved it!
For the first time ever, I finally understand what needs to be in my portfolio. Thank you so much for this video, for some reason it's really hard to find GCSE or IGCSE videos on art and design and guides on what you need in your coursework and final portfolio but this video was a lifesaver
Literally so much stress lifted from my shoulders, you explained this better than my art teacher, time to redo my sketch book 👍
Kathryn Gadd ahhh thank you so much!! Good luck xx
@@MaisieCromptonn thank you sm x
omg my year 10 sketchbook is due in a few days, and our teachers have told us so little on how to develop our work.
this video was by far the clearest and most helpful with the explanations of the assessment objectives and just in general so thank you so much 😭😭😭
This is honestly the most helpful video about gcse art I’ve found!
I’m in y10 wtf did I pick this
Just watched this and honestly thank you so muchhh!! I’m in year 10 currently doing art gcse and I really needed ideas and I watched so many vids but this was the MOST useful❤️❤️
Right I am in y11 now about to start the coursework that will make up 60% of my grade and I have NO CLUE what I’m doing. 😭 My teacher hasn’t explained AT ALL what we are supposed to do and I’m just so stressed! I feel everything I’m doing is so disjointed and random with no order or meaning to it, my teacher has us working in two sketchbooks which has my work scattered everywhere and AGGH I’m losing my mind!
Do you basically just do a load of artist research pages connected to ONE topic you choose for your coursework (like for my mock I chose to do political unrest so do I carry on with that?) and then a ton of examples of you imitating their work? And how does that link to your final piece?
Any help would be greatly appreciated bc my teacher is a nightmare and I am panicking so badly lol
guinevere basically like your mock, you can pick a new topic for your 60% coursework sketchbook - but a lot of teachers recommend you do something similar so for example if you were doing drawing people for your mock then you don’t change to drawing sunsets (you stick to what you know how to do in order to get the best marks) you should change your project title/book but I would say stick to the type of thing you were doing before (unless you hate it) I changed it completely as I didn’t like painting realistic after year 10 // then find different artists to research connected to that topic that ‘influence or inspire your work’ - hope this helps, let me know if you need any other help xx
Maisie Crompton omg bless you absolute angel ! Feeling a lot more relaxed now but again thank you!!
My teacher is the exact same! She's only just told us that we'll be doing our 60% coursework exam in 2 months and we haven't even started the research let alone the preparation for it. I'm so screwed and I have no clue what to do as my teacher keeps on changing what she wants me to do
I'm in year 8 and I was super sure I wanted to take art gcse !! This is so helpful and it made me feel really motivated !!
If anyone's scared about getting a pass, it's honestly not that hard as long as you do the work. I procrastinated like crazy and probably did about a 3rd of my book in the couple of weeks before it was due, and I still got a 5. You got this bruh!!
shows year 8 work : that’s literally what my year 11 book looks like
I also find it easier when u draw and u want highlights. Always start with the light shaded pencil then using a darker pencil add ur shadows or whatever, then after that use a pencil stump to blend it. Or if u don’t have a pencil stump soft tissue works just as well!
I go to a REALLY strict grammar school and they have been prepping us artzo kids for our a-levels and GCSE's and they told us pretty much the same things as you. This is truly an amazing video
(And I was already getting like level 5's from year 8 but my hell school isn't worth It!)
girl your year 8 art was better than my art altogether- in year 8 i was still trying to draw noses on manga faces-
*haha i’m in danger*
in year 10 and currently love art although three people have already dropped out of my class
let's hope it stays that way
e r i n Fingers crosses, good luck xxx
@@MaisieCromptonn omg thanks for replying and thank you 🌹
Wow! I am halfway through year 10 art and we have not been told any of this which is really annoying because I am hoping to study art farther. Thank you so much, this is a life saver!
UR SO TALENTED!!! well deserved
I've been debating whether to take it or not and this video has really helped. Thanks!
Thank you so much this was/is very helpful x love how you went into detail about the certain aspects of the art courses
Hannah Hirst thank you!! xx
I love how she's so respectful to her fans and likes every comment. Plus she's an amazing artist too.😁
Courtney Roe thank u!! xx
I swear down the other day someone said to me GCSE art is the easiest subject you can take and I almost turned round and slapped him, i'm only in year 10 and already its the most stressful of all my subjects
I'm taking textiles instead because we couldn't do art and textiles together which is Annoying but the and I am scared for life
This video is why I got a 9 in my exam sketchbook tysm your tips were so helpful (overall 8 because I didn’t finish my first sketchbook)
Maisie this makes me so happy! You were a superstar! Big love Miss Vollenhoven x
Jax Vollenhoven Ahh thanks Miss!! The best teacher, hope you are doing well x
This was so helpful an it answered a lot of questions I had. Thank u💗
guys please help me, comment the art topics your doing for gcse because I am so so stuck
Reflections
Rn I'm in year 10 and our first topic is contrast
I know I’m super late lol but I’m in year 10 and when gcse work in art started, lockdown happened so I’m rlly nervous for when I go back to school. This helped me know the stress of art lol and amazing art btw! ❣️
I’m hoping to take GCSE art this year and I’m already so excited even though I might not be able to do it, basically I’m trying to change schools due to huge problems with my old school but all the other schools in my area are over-subscribed so I have one more school that might accept me but if they don’t then I’m not getting GCSEs :,) but this video is very helpful and I’ll definitely refer back to it if I’m able to go to the school
i don’t do gcses i’m from ireland, our version of gcses is called the junior certificate exams and i do junior cert art , This video was so helpful with my work!! thank you so so so much 🙏🏻🙏🏻
Jess Finley ahh that’s so interesting!! Never knew that, always wanted to visit Ireland - good luck xxx
Thankyou so much for this video it has really helped I took art and it’s a big regret of mine as I stress about it a lot I’m not naturally talented however I do have the creativity I’m just about to start year 11 so hopefully I can get better in time x
i knew i could trust this video when i saw the book "100 nasty women of history" in the background!!!
this is so helpful! i didn’t pick art as a GCSE but my school gave it to me 🥴 i’m so bad at art but i’ll try my best
thank you so much, it was actually super helpful
Thankyou, this video has helped me alot to gain an overall idea of art as a gcse, I just started year 10 and i have no clue what is going on
This is so helpful thank you! Im in year 10 and i really struggle with my presentation ( its always so boring lol ) so ill deffo use some of these tips
Lula Belle it can be but with backgrounds and stuff I found if I got inspo of Pinterest it made it a lot more fun and not trying to make things perfect, I’m glad it helped - good luck xxx
I want to do art for a living and this helps. I’ll watch this again x
I'm glad xx
I’m really worried for my art GCSEs I’m currently in yr 11 and on a grade 3 I jus don’t know how I can improve my grade and what I’m doing wrong any advice/ tips ?
hey, so I'm in your year. Just fill your book with lots of nice writing annotations and images of drawings or stuff you took pics of (or found) and draw in different mediums of maybe the same thing in small. I find it really fills my book and gives a developed look. good luck!
Maisha Ahmed use your own pictures it shows it’s like personal & in like final pieces use artist influence my teacher keeps going on about that soo
Hey I’m in year 11 to (fml) and I had the exact same problem. I was stuck at a 3 for months. But I found that your actual talent in art isn’t as important as you may think. I’m not particularly talented when it comes to art so I use the photography side to raise my grade. If I were you I’d focus on filling your page with annotations, photos and experimental work. That way you don’t need as many studies and paintings. It doesn’t require much artistic skill but it REALLY helped to raise my grade.
Good luck my dude
I suggest writing about anything and everything that you can. Factfiles, your own opinions, annotations even key words dotted around a page.
Also add every single drawing that relates even if it's shiteee.
Just started year 10. And I'm so happy to find one of these vids from 2019. The standard just keeps getting higher and changing every year lol. Thank you for this video it's really helpful to look at other books and take ideas. Is creating texture and interactive flaps actually good for GCSE's or is that worse for the examiner?
leave me I would say it’s a good thing, not as boring for the examiner but also make it clear :) xx
thankyou so much maisie.i hope this helps me because i am doing coursework{in year 10} xx
This is such a great video, thank you. My daughter is currently just going into year 11. She really wasn’t happy with her year 10 work so has spent the lockdown and the summer holidays redoing it all, she has worked so hard. The part she is struggling with is the annotations- the parts where she needs to talk about the elements of art etc. Would you mind sharing a close up of what you wrote when talking about this please so she has an idea?
I think you should be able to see that in her sketchbook flip through so you might want to check that out if you haven't already xxx
im in year nine and im about to pick it for options so this is very helpful
Not gonna lie GCSE sucked the joy of art out of me for a good year or so but now I sell art as a side hustle, I only had a C too lmao keep going kids you’ll get it!
Your book is really incredible!❤️
(You can see some of my art on my channel if you’re curious ahah)
VixxyArt same and thank you!! - will have a look xx
you're beautiful and thank you this amazing video ; bless you , you absolute lifesaver to us all ♡
This is such a helpful video!!! I'm in year 11 and this is extremely useful :) thank youuuu xxx
DiyDoodler this means a lot, thank you for watching and good luck with your gcse xxx
This is so helpful thank you I'm starting year 11 in September ❤️
My art teacher is literally the person marking our GCSE art exam because she’s qualified so we have to suck up to her and be nice like a teachers pet basically
Hi I am a student who is completing my gcse art early, the topics i have done is 1 full sketchbook on natural forms and spirals then the 2nd topic is confectionary do you think i should mount my confectionary things in another book or should i put them on boards to get top marks? I have also only got 2 A3 big pieces do you think thats enough for the whole thing? any help is much appreciated!
thank you :)
i just started gcse art and i’m already gonna fail🤪
bella codd such a mood, good luckkkk
I can’t draw and I’m doing art yay
Amira Ayanle I bet you can do other things though :)
Actually?!? U can draw?!?
I’m in year 10 doing GCSE art and Im around a grade 5 ish
I got a 9 for my art and this is exactly the advice I would give!
this was so helpful!! thank you xxxx
Emily Chadwick you’re welcome, glad it helped xxxx
I’m going into year 10 which where I live is the start for gcse. I chose art very reluctantly because I don’t want to go into realism but any of the careers I want to go in to need an art gcse.I like to think I have some talent but my only issue is that I will spend 10+ hours on a tiny piece of art, don’t get me wrong I’ll get top grades for it but I’m working on my speed. My art teacher was very persistent with the fact she wanted me to take art purely out of the fact that I can analyse really well, I’m very aware that I am going to struggle with art on top of my computer science and other gcse subjects but I’m too stubborn to not pass and will probably spend weekends working on art pieces. Thank you so much for this I’ve been writing down a bunch of artists and ideas for my sketchbook. Even though I’m super stressed from it I know I’ll be alright eventually. My mum took fine art and she admitted it was stressful but I’m lucky she has her old sketchbook as I can use it for reference :))’ again thank you for this :3
Thank you, im in year 11 and in a mess, I need to sort out my coursework hope I can do it before December
Art GCSE is one of the hardest GCSE's you could possibly do. It's stressful, it's difficult and you need to sacrifice a lot of time if you want to achieve a B, A or even an A*.
If you are choosing art simply because you don't know what else to do you are gonna experience hell
Wow thats rlly reassuring tysm
do A LOT of examples with different medias!
Btw your work is amazing x it gives me hope that improving my art skills is possible
Hannah Hirst of course it is!! Let me know how it goes - good luck xxx
I’ve just picked art for my GSCE! Do I need to buy loads of supply’s for at home to do art work (for homework and stuff) xx
I'm doing mine with a private tutor(sort of) as I'm homeschooled, but this helps so juch, especially considering I'm doing most of the studf by myself without the help of a teacher.
11:30how did u stick the star burst and skittles so they hang like that?
Hi, im doing art GCSE this year and my target is a grade 8 but im a grade 5 at the moment and i don't know how to improve. My teacher keeps rushing us through work and i barely get each page finished. My artist reproductions are good and im proud of them but ive done them small, will that affect my grade? Should i have done them bigger? And my backgrounds are really bad. But i have lots of primary images and observational drawings. I have done media experiments but i think i need to do more. But all together, my book is boring. I have no things that pop out and i don't know what to add. I also have quite a few gaps. Do you know what i should do?????
thank u sm! im in year 10 and i dont rlly like my teacher that much, she only really tells us what we're bad at and never anything good, so our whole kinda class is flunking
this vid helped so much and got sent to a gc :) good job
ines aissi ahhh thank you!! Good luck xxx
Honestly this video was so helpful, I'm so stressed about getting a good grade 😥
My teacher won’t let us decorate our pages
Do you stick your paintings in or painted on the sketchbook page?
this is an accurate video for people who are now taking this gcse nice job
HELLO!! Do I get minus point when I use some stickers in my art portfolio? For IGCSE ART
I’m at college why am I watching this, I don’t even do art I have never even done art ..

I am differenting about doing gcse art or construction because I love artist research and drawing, painting and art but I can't do art when I can do construction.what do you think?
