For those who may not know, Vicki Lawrence could sing in real life and had a number one hit with "The Night The Lights Went Out In Georgia" which was written by songwriter-singer Bobby Russell whom she was married to at the time. I love how she does this in her character as Mama. Thank you for posting this gem!
I laugh and smile watching without realizing just how brilliant Vickie Lawrence really is. Such a complete and totally Living character she has created. Such a pleasure to watch
@@natalieann3041 I hope you don't think I'm referring to a caricature of a real person? Evidently you don't know who Big Mama is. Big Mama is the woman who all of these characters are based off of.
Vicki Lawrence is just so good, I love her! She should've stuck it out longer in this show, she was already gonna be forever typecast , might as well milk it all the way. Then again, she was only in her 30's. Anyway, nice chat self!
She didn't quit. Telepictures only signed her to a 95 episode direct to first-run syndication contract. Once those 95 episodes were taped, they had all they needed. Especially after they acquired the syndication rights to the episodes of the NBC version.
Mama got robbed of being Grandma USA there. They asked her how old she was and she told them it was none of their damned business. People probably forgot that Thelma was played a woman in her thirties who had a #1 hit song previously and could sing just about anything. I love Mama's Family.
Vicki I’ve always loved you!!! I watched Mamas Family when I was a kid and used to watch your talk show when I was out sick for school- come back and bring Mama please!!!!!
She have more class than that races prejudice bitch. I love me some Vicki Lawrence one time she was guest star on Roseanne show and nobody didn’t bothered to clap or scream when she first appeared
I know this might be looking too deep but, wouldn't this be completely inappropriate for her to have performed this number at a bar for her father's friends at the Jigger when she was a little girl? Just sayin, I love this show to pieces but they definitely had a lot of rather unusual sketchy back stories and symbolism. It's coming out of Hollywood after all, what can be expected?
I think you're reading to much into it,my nana would have been about the age vicki portrayed here and she was helping to raise 5 kids smoking and working a full time job by the age of 13. That was a very different era
You're looking way too deep. This was taped in the mid 1980s which means Thelma Harper (nee Crowley) was in her mid 60s. So that means that her backstory of singing this song took place in a rural midwestern bar in the early 1930s. Considering the fact that not only was it the Depression era, there was also misogyny, racial segregation and unfair child labor practices during that time... a little girl singing this song in a saloon is right in alignment with that era. Sometimes, a cigar is just a cigar.
lol yes, I think that’s also part of the joke 😂 It was the 80s, and she was supposed to be like 70… it was the Great Depression and Thelma was a hustler to the core

She SOLD and SANG that song from timid/shy to totally confident! Love the growling near the end!
She's actually started with Carol Burnett.
I think she's way funnier than Carol Burnett
Just my opinion.
ACTUAL LIVE AUDIENCE!!! Rare these days
I love the Moss profile picture
Before Madea there was Mama!
Before Mama there was Big Mama.
Who was Big Mama? (And It was not the Martin Lawrence character because Mama Harper has been around since the Carol Burnett Show in the. ‘70’s.)

@@OneLoveRSR interesting, I didn't know that.

So much fun.....I love Mama....they should have made a movie about the family......❤️
Jayne Haught Eunice the movie. It’s on UA-cam
@@melissanormand7817 totally different vibe than the sitcom, though.
Shes good. It was funny when she yelled at the piano player
Mama will always be my favorite character! She did a Beautiful Job-Vicki Lawrence was excellent!
Notice she stopped being Thelma and turned back into Vickie on the high notes.
One of my Favorite episodes, miss these great shows.

She was the roseanne for that time....But cleaner and funnier
John Forse the shows were on around the same time
@@DiscoMatty79 I was going to say the same thing.

She reminds me of my nana, who use to let stay up late with her to watch this. She was a lady who was a little rough around the edges just like Thelma.
OMG..... I TOTALLY LOVED THIS EPISODE. ONE OF MY MANY FAVES. LOVED THIS SHOW. :-) :-) :-)
Lol :) i love mama's family
A gem.
Excellent. A real gem and a treat.
Press the Golden Buzzer !
Mammas the best!
Mama Harper is good! 👏👏
Idk sumthin abt the show just never rlly caught my eye but I fell in love w/ this show the moment I saw this scene😂😂😂😂😂😭
I was hoping she'd belt out, "The Night the Lights Went Out in Georgia". This was better suited for Mama though.
1:12 😂
Go Thelma
1:10 this is so my mother 😆
Do it Thelma!!!!
She does a good job, of course no one comes close to Sophie Tucker.
Bobby Darin did.
Mmm, I don't know--just listened to Sophie Tucker's and Bobby Darin's. I like Sophie's better than Bobby's, but Vicki Lawrence's performance is great!
Reta Shaw sang it on The Ghost and Mrs Muir and nailed it
😂Kids in
By chance does anyone know who really sings the song this way? I found the older version but I need this version. PLEASE HELP.
Tee Bryant the actress’s name is Vicki Lawrence
The original person to sing this was Sophia Tucker.
bobby darrin
About a thousand people have covered this song everybody from Sophie Tucker to Donna Summer to Jerry Reed
