Backpacking Lost Creek Wilderness/Ben Tyler Trail/Craig Creek Trail/Colorado

- This video is about backpacking with my good friend Quinsey through a more remote section of Lost Creek Wilderness. This was Quinsey's second backpacking trip ever! We started our adventure on the Ben Tyler Trail via Rock Creek Trailhead to Craig Creek Trail to Brookside Mccurdy to Colorado Trail Segment 4 and lastly Road 56. Enjoy! Also, there is a typo in this video, close to the end of the video I spelled Quinsey's name with a C when it is correctly spelled with an S. Luckily I got the one at the end credits right, whoops! That happens when way too much multi-tasking is going on. Love ya Quinsey, my apologies. -Megan
Craig Park is one of my favorites, been going there since I was just a kid, i'm 70+ now and don't know if I have another one in me or not. I used to walk in from Kenosha Pass up Twin Cone and bushwhack over to Ben Tyler trail then to the headwaters of Craig Creek. We would then either walk to Brookside trail then to Bailey or hike over to North Lost creek then down to the Lost Park road. Really liked your video.
It was one of my favorite areas/backpacking trips that year. Stunning area. We ran into a man camping that said he saw tons of elk further down from where we were camping in the morning. Your adventure sounds really awesome! Sounds like you know the area much better than I do. Would love to go back again. I clipped out the part of the video that had tons and piles of downfall. Anyhow, thanks for checking out the video, much appreciated. -Megan
@@meganshields4447 I've seen that elk herd as you are crossing between Twin Cone and Ben Tyler trail. Seems like you can lose the crowds quickly by walking a few miles. I rarely used to see anyone on my hikes thru Craig Park- which is fine by me. I like the enthusiasm that you have for the hiking- to bad so many people are caught up in unimportant things.
Finally a new Colorado video on UA-cam. I Really enjoyed your video, beautiful views the whole time. I loved the part when you went past the camera then turned around to recover it lol. You always see that strategy in hiking videos but never the actual footage of turning around. Thank you for sharing.
Hey Jerry, thank you very much for posting on my video. Also, it's much appreciated that you noticed me run back for the camera. Filming easily adds up more hiking involved on the trail. Cheers! -Megan
Another great hike! The views and narration are fabulous. The slide show and music at the ends adds a great touch. Gesszzz…..there are just so many places to check out in the state and so little time to do it! Oh ...and yes....the video of your older dog laying in the stream letting the stream water flow into his mouth was awesome too!!
campingalan Hi thanks for the nice comment! This was a really good hike, but a ton of uphill. It was very secluded and hard to find the trail at times along Craig creek because of all the game trails out there that look like the actual trail. Beautiful and quite. Hiking along the Colorado Trail is always one of my favorites. It offers just a ton of good hiking and meeting awesome people along the way.
Oh wow.....I am surprised about the uphill amount (disclaimer-I've never looked at the Lost Creek area on a map). I would have assumed that what I call the more "Front Range" area would only be moderate. But, it looks like a great hike, none the less. Especially, if it isn't too crowded. Bleh...I am currently suffering from the combination of the fact that we are still 3 months away from the high country opening up from snow (though, I do snowshoe a lot)….and this COVID 19 reduced contact and travel scene developing (which, of course, is tragic for those that are suffering because of it). Anyways....looking forward to when one can hike all day and then throw on some tevas in camp! Have a good one!
Great video. Fantastic footage. Your descriptions were good. You did a nice job of not always filming yourself. I loved that you did not add music over the top of your video. The dog floating in the stream was great. Constructive criticism: have a map to show people where you went. Keep up the good work!!
PS. My wife & I take care of Colorado Trail section 5.2, from the Rock Creek Trailhead to Kenosha Pass.
Megan - great video! Love the Lost Creek Wilderness and the solitude you can get there so close to Denver. About your water filter, it was most likely the tannins in the water that clogged up your Katadyne - that was the tea coloring in the water. When in the meadows with a lot of willows and marsh I try to avoid the heavily tannin-laden water if I can. Sawyers and ceramic elements will fail as well from the tannins in the water - some will take longer than others. For the Katadyne’s I find that a really good flush and dry at home between trips is the trick to keeping them running well. Kudos on the great backpack 👏👏👏
Kirk Rasmussen Hey there, thanks for watching my video and also for leaving a comment! I feel the same way about Lost Creek Wilderness, such an amazing place! Good to know about the tannins in the water, I’ll do some research on it. That stuff was unavoidable in the meadow, so so much of it. Unfortunately the filter totally failed after this trip...even after a good flush 😭 so I’m thinking it may have just been the filter itself. The dang thing wouldn’t even run kitchen sink water through it, yikes! I bought a Sawer and am giving that a shot. Happy hiking and thank again for watching! -Megan
Great shots with both video and stills, beautiful scenery. Not been to Lost Creek, but definitely want to check it out. Thanks for sharing.
Thank you, I was messing around with my camera a lot on this one so I wasn't too sure how the video would turn out! The scenery is definitely beautiful in Lost Creek but there is some tough hiking involved in some places. It provides excellent early season hiking. Hopefully you can make it out to Colorado and check it out one of these days!
U have to clean those katadyn filters well between uses in silty water sources. Sawyers fail much quicker and process about 1/5th the water per use. Another good option is the Grayl system. Great video. Helped me quite a bit in my research for a trip. Safe travels.
jsa ash Thanks and good to know! I’ve always tried to take good care of my filters, unfortunately I just couldn’t seem to get it right with the Katadyn. I did buy a Sawyer, hopefully it does well. No issues so far but we’ll see. Thanks for leaving a comment on my video! Glad it helped in your research, and Cheers! -Megan
@@meganshields4447 u rock.
I don't even carry a filter anymore. I just use Aquamira. Works great and weighs next to nothing. And that sparkly stuff in the water is fool's gold, by the way. Nice video.
Stephen Chalmers I thought about doing the same. Ended up with a Sawer filter that I really like and easy to unclog. Yeah I did some research on the sparkly stuff, It seems to be everywhere lol!
I haven't watched the whole video but your dogs are named after 2 of my favorite characters! We should definitely be friends lmao
Cool video, thank you for sharing your experience. Regarding the water filter, an Appalachian Trail hiker in my group swears bt the Sawyer Squeeze. Since we backpack in a larger group we normally bring a Platypus Gravity Filter. I might be overkill for you, but something to think about. The sparkly flakes in the water are probably Mica. We saw a lot of it in the Tetons. The watercolor could be just silt, but more than likely it is a high level of iron in the water. Different minerals will cause the water to look like it is different colors.
Hey there! Thanks for all the feedback! I did end up buying a sawyer squeeze and it fits onto a large MSR 4 litter bladder that I own also. It works great! I’ve been doing some research on minerals since that trip, because it sparked my interest seeing the water that color. Thanks for watching my video! Always great to connect to others who share a love for the great outdoors! -Megan
great video! I have to check out that trail. I have a gravity 6L Katadyn and has never let me down. My buddies use them and serve them well... dunno what to tell you but I bet they have good CS
MrSomeofthem Hey thanks for leaving a comment on my video! I hope you are able to check out the trail this year, it was beautiful! Also, good to know about the Katadyn. It could possibly just be my filter that is having trouble. REI has a good exchange policy to luckily I can get a new one. Take care and happy hiking!
Great video!
Thank you! We had a great time with beautiful scenery! -Megan
This is the exact hike im going to be doing here this summer. Except im going to be coming up from ben tyler on other side of rockcreek. I have never seen this good footage of craig meadows/craig park its awesome! I live only a few miles from ben tyler trailhead. What time of year was this? It looks pretty green was planning on august for me but if this was shot in july then i may go then!
Hey Bryce, we hiked this in early July. If I remember correctly we were getting a lot of rain that year! I’m glad you liked the video! I’d really like to return to this area again someday. So beautiful! Craig Creek Trail was very secluded, we didn’t see any other hikers up there. It was a very pretty hike. Happy backpacking adventures! -Megan
Enjoyed your video! Was just in this area last week. Did you have a hard time finding the trail on Ben Tyler? I sure did. Was a hard trail to find in areas, but a very pretty area.
Thank you very much! Also, thanks for leaving a comment on my video! We did not have a super hard time on the Ben Tyler Trail however we did have to navigate through the willows from one cairn post to the next! It would disappear and then reappear a lot. Luckily we had our app, Hiking Project, which was surprisingly working so we could pinpoint the trail exactly. We did have to pay extra attention on the Craig Park Trail however, because for a lot of that trail, there really isn't a trail to follow. There is a lot of game up in the valley so there were a few times we had to make sure we were not following a game trail. Also, Brookside McCurdy coming down from Craig Park had a lot of downed trees and the trail was a bit overgrown, making it a bit difficult. Overall it was some tough hiking until we got to the Colorado Trail Seg. 4 and that was some nice pleasant hiking! Cheers to more adventures! -Megan
Hey! I’m planning a trip for some friends and it’s their first time backpacking. I was just going to do Ben Tyler trail (5 miles in to camp and 5 out) - would you recommend going a bit further? Any good camping spots or views that are a bit extra mileage (but still for beginners)? Love the vid :)
Also what time of year was this? Wanting to go end of may
I wonder if that shiny stuff is Pyrite.
I have noticed before, it’s literally everywhere but I don’t know what it is. There was a ton of it in the stream on this trip. I did end up changing filter systems and have not had a issue since.
You should go with a CNOC. Best of the best.
Her Name Is Actually Quincy? Like Really!
