- At long last, here is my video for the 25 best actor Oscar winning performances of all time. This was a hard list to compile, but I really enjoyed how this came out. After this, there is one video left to produce- Best Picture, which will come soon. Enjoy! (*Spoilers may be included).
Top 25 Best Picture Winners: • Top 25 Best Picture Wi...
I don't get how Daniel-Day Lewis wasn't on here for My Left Foot...

Where's Adrien Brody for The Pianist?
Daniel Day Lewis for My Left Foot is the best acting I have ever seen.
+Connor Harte Him, Dustin Hoffman (Rain Man) and Eddie Redmayne (The Theory of Everything) for truly SUPERB portrayals of individuals suffering from mental problems/disorders.
I have yet to come across a person portraying a disorder who does it so skillfully as these three.
true

AL PACINO.....?
He won for the wrong movie.
All great actors. But I missed the Nicolas Cage in "Leaving Las Vegas", for me the best interpretation of a drunk in all of cinema.
Uh, Bad Santa lol
1. Marlon Brando - Godfather
2. Robert De Niro -Raging Bull
3 - Anthony Hopkins- Silence
4. Al Pacino - Scent Of A Woman
If I had to make a top 25 list it would have been

3. Anthony Hopkins-Silence of the lambs
2. Tom Hanks- Forrest Gump
1. Marlon Brando - On the Waterfront
The Silent of the Lambs... GREAT movie, Anthony superb actor
Not a single actor mentioned here in top 25 can come even close to Robert De Niro for his performance in Raging bull. Forget Raging Bull, not a single actor can think of surpassing him . Such is our Bobby. Hands down , the greatest ever..!!
aman gajraj Firstly, De Niro should have either tied with or lost to John Hurt that year. Secondly, as far as this list is concerned, Brando in on the Waterfront and Peck in To Kill a Mockingbird were better.
daniel day lewis and al pacino are on his lvl stop being a fanboy
The year Deniro won the Oscar for Raging Bull the national society of film critics gave their best actor award to Peter O'Toole for The Stunt Man.
This dude just put forest gump ahead of the godfather. And no Daniel Day Lewis in My Left Foot.
He’s only one to ever win 3 Oscar’s
I think Al Pacinos’ performance in Scent of a Woman is unbelievable
Al Pacino is The best !!!
Nic Cage's performance in Leaving Las Vegas was one of the greatest things I have ever seen. Definitely deserved a place within the top 10.
He was great in that.
al pacino in scent of a woman number one
No Al Pacino??.... You must be kidding me.!!
I know, weird to me too!! He's fab.
He's done great performances but his victory for 'Scent of a Woman' is considered one of the Academy's most underwhelming recognitions. He just didn't win the Oscar for the right role.
What about Sean Penn in Mystic River? that was flawless!
I like your list. I was lucky enough to see most of these actors in their winning films. Daniel Day Lewis was great in There Will Be Blood but you forgot another Daniel Day Lewis movie where he also won an Oscar, My Left Foot which for me is the greatest performance by an actor on screen. You also forgot F. Murray Abraham who also won Best Actor in Amadeus.
My fave Oscar winners are:
1. Tom Hanks - Forrest Gump (1994)
2. Anthony Hopkins - The Silence of the Lambs (1991)
3. Clark Gable - It Happened One Night (1934)
4. Robert De Niro - Raging Bull (1980)
5. Marlon Brando - On the Waterfront (1954)
6. Henry Fonda - On Golden Pond (1981)
7. James Cagney - Yankee Doodle Dandy (1942)
8. Tom Hanks - Philadelphia (1993)
9. Daniel Day Lewis - Lincoln (2012)
10. Jack Nicholson - One Flew over the Cuckoos Nest (1975)
11. Adrian Brody - The Pianist (2002)
12. Dustin Hoffman - Rain Man (1988)
13. George C. Scott - Patton (1970)
14. Kevin Spacey - American Beauty (1999)
15. Gary Cooper - Sergeant York (1941)
16. Charlton Heston - Ben - Hur (1959)
17. Geoffrey Rush - Shine (1996)
18. Rami Malek - Bohemian Rhapsody (2018)
19. Forest Whitaker - Last King of Scotland (2006)
20. Daniel Day Lewis - My Left Foot (1989)
21. Leonardo di Caprio - The Revenant (2015)
22. Spencer Tracy - Boys Town (1938)
23. Will Smith - King Richard (2021)
24. F Murray Abraham - Amadeus (1984)
25. Marlon Brando - The Godfather (1972)
AL PACINO in Scent of a Woman should have been icluded
He should won for the Godfather and Scarface, not for Scent of a Woman.
Definitely not
He's done great performances but his victory for 'Scent of a Woman' is considered one of the Academy's most underwhelming recognitions. He just didn't win the Oscar for the right role.
fuck man, this was the best list ever, robert deniro is the king and marlon brando is god in this world of greatness
I love the song you used over your picks
All of us can endlessly debate who should be on this list and in what order...there are so many great choices but ultimately it is great to be reminded about all these great performances and to enjoy the excellent work in compiling them so artfully! Thanks for this!
Thanks for saying this. It helps put it all in perspective lol!
Here's My List
1. DDL - There Will Be Blood
2. Robert De Niro - Raging Bull
3. Anthony Hopkins - Silence of the Lambs
4. Jack Nicholson - One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest
5. Tom Hanks - Philadelphia
6. Marlon Brando - On the Waterfront
7. Nicholas Cage - Leaving Las Vegas
8. Dustin Hoffman - Rain Man
9. Gregory Peck - To Kill a Mockingbird
10. Peter Finch - Network
11. Marlon Brando - The Godfather
12. Kevin Spacey - American Beauty
13. Adrien Brody - The Pianist
14. Colin Firth - The King's Speech
15. Forest Whitaker - Last King of Scotland
16. DDL - Lincoln
17. Philip Seymour Hoffman - Capote
18. Tom Hanks - Forrest Gump
19. Sean Penn - Mystic River
20. Russell Crowe - Gladiator
Now, you can finally added Leonardo Dicaprio for The Revenant
Ohh fuck him.
Marlon Brando's performance in On the Waterfront was STUNNING, still can't forget.. Gregory in To Kill a Mockingbird was great too.
I always thought Lee J. Cobb stole "On The Waterfront", one of those rare villain performances that is so good that I hate his guts every second he's on screen.
No DDL for My Left Foot? Surely you must be joking
Al Pacino Scent of A Woman ...???? Philip Seymour Hoffman Capote ..? =( Kevin Spacey - Usual Suspects ?
Good list though just order not quite that :)
Kevin spacey won supporting actor. Al Pacino's win was one of the most disgraceful decisions the Academy has ever made.
And Hoffman was not good enough to be on this list.
Usual Suspects or American Beauty :) Both are perfect performances, TOP level.
He's done great performances but his victory for 'Scent of a Woman' is considered one of the Academy's most underwhelming recognitions. He just didn't win the Oscar for the right role.
this is a PHENOMENAL video compilation and i watch it AT LEAST once a day for inspiration! Thank you so much. Your TALENT is appreciated. Can you please tell me what song is playing during the credits with the children's voices? It is BEAUTIFUL! Please don't stop what your doing because it is BRILLIANT!
Hi Nancy - thank you SO much for the kind words! I appreciate your comments and feedback, and glad this can be an inspiration to watch. I work hard at selecting the music to go with the imagery, as I like having the goosebump effect of remembering great film works. The music at the end is "Creep" (Live) from the Social Network soundtrack, one of my favorites. Be sure to check out my 25 Greatest Films to Win Best Picture- new video, needs more traffic! Let me know what you think. Link to video is provided in the description of this one.
+Josef Hautala Honorable Mentions usually are listed at the end credits. Did you not see them here? Perhaps I forgot :(
Batman trilogy music
@@JasonMovieGuy Hi sir. I realize this is 8 years later but I just discovered this absolute gem of a video and I can thank you enough for creating it and putting it out there in the universe, as it’s a better place with the video in it. I suffer from depression and anxiety and whenever that flares up, I put on this video and it assuages my symptoms quickly and dramatically. On a separate note, I just looked up “Creep” from the “Social Network” soundtrack and according to iTunes, it doesn’t actually exist. May I ask if that was an error? Could it be from another source? Thank you.
Where is Murray Abraham as Antonio Salieri ?
there you go :) +1!!
I disagree with some picks, but yea #1 is right.
This is my TOP 12 of Best Actor Oscar Winner:
1.Daniel Day-Lewis for "There will be Blood"
2.Al Pacino for "Scent of a Woman"
3.Kevin Spacey for "American Beauty"
4.Denzel Washington for "Training Day"
5.Jack Nicholson for "As Good As It Gets"
6.Michael Douglas for "Wall Street"
7.Gene Hackman for "The French Connection"
8.Adrien Brody for "The Pianist"
9.Ernest Borgnine for "Marty"
10.Daniel Day-Lewis for "Lincoln"
11.J.Nicholson for "One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest"
12.R.Crowe for "Gladiator"
Great performances from Cagney,Scott,Tracey,Stewart,Bogart,Cooper,Gable,Olivier,Brando,Peck and De Niro.
Hi Renee! Thank you so much for the kind words. I really appreciate it. It's people like you that motivate me to keep creating art and videos and I'm so glad you enjoy them!
You missed Al Pacino in scent of a woman
This is his list, not ours
@filip: make your own video than and stop spamming my page.
how is it spam to disagree? Get real....
Whats the end credits song?
I appreciate the fact that you actually went back through the decades to make your list instead of doing what most people do and go back 5-10 years to find the best movies of "all time"
AMAZING JOB MAN IM A FAN OF YOU... I MEAN WE CAN ALWAYS NIT-PICK ON OTHER PEOPLE'S WORK WHEN WE DONT DO NOTHIN OURSELVES LOL so I'll just say I agree with about 90% , I personally would put Patton further on but like i said i mean at this point is nit-picking, great job and great song can you please tell me the name of the music that you implemented?
I Loved the video don't get me wrong but I felt like I didn't see enough of the actual performance because, although good, the music definitely removed from the ability to observe and admire their performances
This must have been a hard list for you to put together, Jason. I agree on your top ten, but believe Forrest Whitaker should have been included for "The Last King of Scotland" somewhere on the list.
Awesome video! Your music choices make it sound more dramatic as we ascend to the top best actor winners. very nice
Road to Perdition (Title Theme)---Thomas Newman
De Niro's performance in raging bull is the best i have ever seen.
Al pacino - scent of a woman, nowhere ?????????????
F. Murray Abraham in Amadeus?
Should be in the top ten for sure!
Yeeeesssssssss....!
Yes,yes, yes...
I was very expectant about what man could be crowned by you as the best of the best. And when the first flash of Raging Bull appeared, something exploded inside of me.
Jake LaMotta is undoubtedly the character that de Niro needed to take his seat in the Olympus of Cinema.Thanks,Jason.. !!!
Ha thanks Morgan! I did this years ago and it still is one of my favorite videos. They're not easy to compose.
I don't think so you forgot Al Pacino
+Achraf Izem al pacino has been nominated a lot of times... He deserved his oscar for the godfather part 2 and not for scent of a woman
Al Pacino is not in your list ? .........jajajajajaaajajaaaaa
GET YOUR FUCKING SOUND LEVELS RIGHT, JESUS CHRIST I SHOULDN'T HAVE TO ADJUST THE VOLUME EVERY 20 SECONDS!
One day you'll remember saying those words to me and they will hurt you more than anything I could ever say back to you.
My sound levels were off. The iMovie I used for this was old and tired. I am getting a new one this year and the future videos will be more polished.
Hi! I just want to say that there are no words to describe how great this video is. Congratulations, Jason, for great work!
I love jack nicholson's performance in one flew over the cuckoo's nest he is so great
That might be my number one pick. Although I am not a fan of New Hollywood movies "One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest" is by far my favorite movie of the era, and easily one of my top ten, maybe even top five favorite movies of all time.
This list is very good! However, I would include F.Murray Abraham's amazing work in Amadeus, Alec Guinness's career best in The Bridge on the River Kwai and William Hurt's work in Kiss of The Spider Woman.
Where is Forest Whitaker for Last King of Scotland?
Good list however, Al Pacino in Scent of a Woman is missing. That in my books is the No. Oscar winning performance of all time. Thanks for sharing this with us all.
fusock For once I actually agree with you....but you still piss me off.
Michael Colby doesn't take away from his win still though.
***** that has nothing to do with my comment, the point was that he did not deserve to win not that he did not win.
Brando in Godfather 'mannered, silly' OK big guy. Any other actor would have hammed it up and turned the 'gangster' into a cartoonish villain. He completely played against that and created a the most softly spoken, family-orientated boss who never raised his voice and consequently was even more terrifying and realistic. He was genius.
I'll have to disagree with you there. There is a difference between being subtle yet intimidating and being downright underwhelming. Brando in "The Godfather" and frankly any other role of his was definitely more of the latter.
you forgot Alec Guiness...
Some performances that you did not include that you should have were Spencer Tracy in "Captain's Courageous" (1937), Ernest Borgnine in "Marty" (1955), Burt Lancaster in "Elmer Gantry" (1960), and Henry Fonda in "On Golden Pond" (1981).
Though I am glad that you included Spencer Tracy in "Boys Town" (1938), James Cagney in "Yankee Doodle Dandy" (1942), Gregory Peck in "To Kill A Mockingbird" (1962), Sidney Poitier in "Lilies Of The Field" (1963), Jack Nicholson in "One Flew Over The Cuckoo's Nest" (1975), and Tom Hanks in "Forrest Gump" (1994).
I agree with you. To me his most Oscar Worthy performance was in Dog Day Afternoon, unfortunately that also happened to be the same year as Jack Nicholson in One Flew over the Cuckoo's Nest.
I’d put Kevin Spacey for American Beauty in the top 10
Where's Al Pacino for scent of a woman ???
He's done great performances but his victory for 'Scent of a Woman' is considered one of the Academy's most underwhelming recognitions. He just didn't win the Oscar for the right role.
I love this, keep coming back to it, it never gets old.
Anything he's won in could make near the top of ur list, but I think My Left Foot was Daniel Day-Lewis's best work and deserved one of the highest spots
This is a very well-studied list, and I agree with most of the picks with a few differences. I would have Peck, as Atticus Finch at the very top, and would have fit Ronald Colman, in "A Double Life" in there somewhere. So many of these same actors gave great performances that did not win, Spencer Tracy MANY times over, and Denzil in "Malcolm X" and "Philadelphia." Bogie in "Casablanca" and "Treasure of the Sierra Madre," etc. Thanks for putting this together. Thoroughly enjoyed it!
Thanks for the comments James! You should check out my other videos that showcase Best Actors Nominated and Best Actors Never Nominated. I chronicled each honor into 3 separate categories.
Hanks as Forrest Gump is among the worst rewarded by the academy! Try reconciling that with the fact that Mitchum, always impeccable, never recieved the statue. Great to see Cagney on the list, but where was Robert Duvall? Charles Laughton? All lists are arbitrary, i know but seriously...
18 minutes Anthony Hopkins was onscreen for 118/minutes. This is not to. Say he didn’t deserve it. I am saying he delivered the most memorable performance in just 18 minutes.
Kudos to Jason - great job putting this list together!
I feel the following have to be added somewhere:
- Russell Crowe in Gladiator
- Jack Nicholson in As Good As it Gets
- Robert Duvall in Tender Mercies
- Paul Newman - The Color of Money
- Lee Marvin in Cat Ballou
To make room I would delete the following:
- Peter Finch (I feel he only won because he died that year!)
- Richard Dreyfuss
- Jeremy Irons
- Colin Firth
- Denzel Washington
Thanks for making this wonderful list!
1.Al Pacino
2.Robert De Niro
3.Marlon Brando
4.Anthony Hopkins
5.Jack Nicolson
He's beyond great in raging bull and the thing is his paranoia of his wife cheating on him and how he cant be close to anyone, not even his own brother .. he reallly showed great acting when he''s crying about how he threw the fight in the lockerroom.
Very good list. Hard to argue w/ any on it. My list would have Brando-On the Waterfront and De Niro-Raging Bull (1)(1a) among Oscar winners. My best performance of all time would be for a part that didn't win an Oscar: Dustin Hoffman - Midnight Cowboy. Incredible performance in that film.
My favorite performance of all time is that of Jimmy Stewart in "It's a Wonderful Life" (1946). He lost to Fredric March in "The Best Years of Our Lives" but I still love Fredric March and his performance in that film, but "It's a Wonderful Life" is my favorite movie of all time and Jimmy Stewart is my favorite actor of all time. If I had to pick my favorite winner, I would probably settle for Jack Nicholson in "One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest" (1975), my favorite New Hollywood film and one of my top ten, maybe even top five favorite movies of all time, and Jack Nicholson is my favorite actor who is currently still alive.
nice list!! :) similar to mine... but my n.1 is Sir Anthony Hopkins in TSOTL :)
Interesting selections! Personally, I would not put Tom Hanks for Forrest Gump nearly as high on the list, but I was very glad to see Anthony Hopkins for Hannibal Lecter very high on this list. If you're considering Best Supporting Actors as possibilities on this list (such as Denzel Washington), then I would recommend thinking of Javier Bardem as Anton Chigurh in "No Country for Old Men." Also, I love the music!
Why is Charlton Heston not on this list for Ben Hur....you really should do part 2 or something...
Agreed! A fair number of people think he was a bad choice of winner, but I thought he was just downright brilliant; he deserved that oscar entirely.
Glad you saw that- many overlook him and this performance was stunning. He was really out of his comfort zone and it worked marvelously.
to be fair, Anthony Hopkins performance was more supporting than leading!!
Anthony Ogans No. The role of Hannibal Lector was a lead role. He was the male lead of that film. Buffalo Bill was the supporting character. Just because he isn't on screen for the whole damn movie, doesn't mean he isn't a lead. It's not that hard to understand.
William Holden, who won the BEST Actor Academy Award, for (1953) "Stalag 17," SHOULD be on this list!!!! He was FANTASTIC in that movie!!! William Holden, was (40) Years older than me, but I LOVE his acting, his very handsome face, and that magnificent voice!!!!😍
He was pretty good in "Stalag 17", but I definitely wouldn't put him on this list, but hey, we're all entitled to our own opinions.
NICE VIDEO WELL DONE COULD YOU PLEASE PUT THE TRAKCLIST IS VERY GOOD
THANKS
Awesome video! I was a bit disappointed to see Alec Guinness missing, but we can't always get what we want.
Coincidencia! !!! ROBERT DE NIRO. ...TORO SALVAJE... SIIIII
I was waiting till the very end and I was gonna tell you "How the hell could you leave out Robert De Niro?" then he was number one. Good list with the exception of Denzel Washington, F Murray Abraham could have taken that spot.Your list though.
Leonardo DiCaprio-The Revenant (2015)
Great list but I am shocked beyond all belief how low Day-Lewis is.
Where is Al Pacino for scent of a woman
denzel in training day is the best acting I have ever seen.
ha I thought the last one was Rocky Balboa
piece of shit spotted.
Sly didn't win best actor that year.
WOW what a video…the quality of its production and your list
of actors are great. I tried to do a video list myself, but it’s nothing
compared to yours…really nice job!!!
+Mario Brescio That's very nice of you Mario! I worked FOREVER on this one lol. Don't be afraid to make a video. I would love to see it. I started doing my channel in 2010 and was also challenged with making homages to movies. The more videos you edit, the better you get. Thanks again for the nice shout out!
De Niro for Scorseses taxi driver?
Vito Corleone looks so badass with the music.
Daniel Day-Lewis is the best actor of all time
I still come back to this video 5 yrs later
NO Heath ledger I'm done he was by far one of the best actors in the world if not the best... I mean for the amount of roles he played from being a gay cowboy to the psychiatric and sinister character Of the joker
I agree!? He should've won for Brokeback Mountain, glad he won for The Dark Knight though😍
+jamie brand can't you read? He never won an oscar for leading role
I think the list was made up of Best ActorOscar Winners and not nominees. Heath was only nominated for "Broke Back" and didn't win.
Some day... you'll have to include Gary Oldman... that is, if Oscars ever go back to being based solely about talent and they get around to giving him one. :/
Oldman is one of the most underrated actors evah.
They gave him,finally
What about Russell Crowe in A Beautiful Mind? I can't imagine his performance being lesser than that of Sean Penn in Harvey Milk. In my opinion, Sean maximized his character's potential in Mystic River than he did in Milk. Regardless, I like how inclusive your nominees were and your expertise being more credible than a contemporary, substandard dummy. Thanks for the video.
+Ben Lane Crowe didn't win for A Beautiful Mind. He lost to Denzel Washington in Training Day. Crowe made my list for Best Actors Nominees that Lost Oscar.
He didn't win that one, he lost for Denzel Washington, he won for Gladiator
Penn's "Milk" was more political than anything. It was a stale movie. Acting was no biggie.
Crowe in "Beautiful Mind" much, much better!!!!
Where is F. Murray Abraham from Amadeus?
I'm still bitter that Liam Neeson did NOT win for his superb performance as Oskar Schindler in Schindler's List!!! I mean, Tom Hanks was great as usual in Philadelphia, but he didn't deserve the oscar that year over Liam. Besides, Tom won it next year in Forrest Gump!
+Lemon Drops
I think that Tom Hanks was better in Philadelphia.
Extremely well done video.
And #26 Will Be Me 🤠🏆 👍🏼
Great list but one of my favorites is Tom Hanks for Philadelphia
I'm gonna have to agree with you there.
Dustin Hoffman (Rain Man)
De Niro in Raging Bull, he'll yeah baby
de niro is a genius ;)
De Niro is the greatest ever. I will kill any fucker who says otherwise.
Aman exactly arguably one the greatest cinematic legends. To me out of any actor in cinema, he’s had the greatest career.
Glad to see Raging Bull was number one!
Awesome list! I wouldn't change a thing. Maybe Daniel Day Lewis could have been represented by My Left Foot, or Tom Hanks by Saving Private Ryan, but either way, this is a very good list. Seeing my favorite actor of all time at number one was awesome.
Tom Hanks didn't win for SPR
Very good, Brandon for two
Generally a well thought out list, not like many of these "lists" that seem to be made up by people of extremely low intellect. Many people believe that DDL in There Will Be Blood gave the greatest performance by a male actor of all time. Certainly greater than 11th. Ben Kingsley in Ghandi was well ranked. So was Nicholson in Cuckoo's Nest, which for a long time was considered by many to be the best American movie ever made.
Damn good list, respect to you for your insights.
