Hi Kim,I was surging for some ideas in all year round flowers and you came my way🌴I love your garden so full of beautiful flowers. I will be watching you for now on, I’m from Florida by the way🌴welcome back and just let the Holly Ghost guide you ❤️ you will never go wrong.😊
Hi Kim, you bring winter sowing to me in the South of Germany (Zone 6b) and I am trying it! We actually do have freezing temperatures, so I did start already, but I know for sure, there will be a constant changing of warmer to freezing episodes till my last frost date, the 15th of May. Thank you for the opportunity to ask you questions on my sowing path. 🌺
Just want to tell you how much I enjoy and learn from your videos. I'm heading out to get my jugs prepared and find a location so I will be ready. Thank you for sharing your love of gardening. Love the sign/picture board behind you. Sweet. Signed, little bummed this morning from Athens, GA.
Thank you so very much. That means so much to me. I can’t wait to hear how you do. That sign is my late dad’s signature my daughter had made for me. It’s exact and so beautiful. 🥹
Some plants thrive in winter sowing jugs for me every year and some never germinate or don’t thrive. Tomatoes, chamomile, chives, feverfew, onions, and leeks all seem like to love it in there.
Thank you so much! No it is for annuals perennials vegetables flowers herbs. I am posting the rest of the Q&A on Monday/Tuesday and I go into detail on what types of plants work best and will speak to this question in depth!
You are so sweet and encouraging! Thank you! I’ve been gardening for years but this is the first time I’m planning on trying winter sowing. I’m a little confused what to do about watering. Do I keep them consistently moist? You just pour water into the top of the jugs?
Oh Kim, your flowers are gorgeous!! I planted Zinnias for the first time this past summer. They struggled some, because of me, but after a little while they flourished! I loved looking at them every time I went to work in the vegetables. I did bring a few bouquets inside for my kitchen window! Have a great day! ~~Lisa
Hi Lisa, thank you so much! Zinnias are so gorgeous aren’t they? I am so glad you had that made your heart happy. Keep trying them and all the different varieties. Maybe a different type will work better
Your encouragement is so very inspiring! I will be trying winter sowing for the first time this year and am excited to see what happens! I’m in zone 6b in Michigan, so we are already very cold, below freezing. It’s okay to start even zinnia seeds now using this method?
Hi Kim! I have milk jugs saved and I am going to try this. I even have my Mexican Sunflower seeds ready to go. You are our biggest cheerleader! 😊. Can I do this with vegetable seeds or is this only for perrenial.flowers?
I answered this in detail in my Q&A video I will post either Monday or Tuesday. In case you don’t see it I sprinkle slug away in my jugs because I almost lost everything last year.
Here's another question for the Q and A. Is there some advantage to using clear jugs vs something more like seed starting trays with a clear lid which would allow you to space plants out more and potentially have less root disturbance when transplanting?
I’ve seen others do it this way but they make holes in the tray cover to allow moisture in and holes in the tray to allow drainage and then they tie the whole thing up like a package so that the lids don’t blow away. You don’t get as much room for the seedling to grow vertically, unless you have really tall clear domes, but people do it.
The depth of the milk jugs allows your roots a bigger area to grow well. I tried an experiment in one of my videos and am going to do it again this year to see how it goes. I did a plastic tote and planted in that and it was ok. I tried plastic bags as well and found the jugs work best. Hey try it and see if you come up with something new~
@@thesoutherndaisyllc Yeah because you don't have to use the seed tray lid as overturned clear tote gives you a lot of room and holds in heat too and you can fit multiple containers under one as well.
It wasn’t as good for several reasons for me! I am going to give it another try because I always love options but the plain old milk gallon jugs consistently give me the BEST results year after year!
Great tips. I do believe it's wise to cover jugs during a hard frost. Do you use lightweight frost cloth and double up. or a blanket? Is it ok if it lays on the plants coming out of the jugs? Thanks!
I would say only once you have bigger than an inch or two germination and even then I don’t until I have bigger plants closer to time to open the containers. I would try to arrange the sheet or cover to where it isn’t laying on and breaking the plants.
You should just go for it. Take a look at my older videos on what I open and you will see some ideas. I have a video from seed to garden or something like that and I show seeds and what they grow into. My garden is cottage style and I didn’t pick a color pallet. It was gorgeous!
I want you to try it! I am not in your zone and don’t have experience other than my conversations with others that have tried it in your zone and had success. You may have to be a little more high maintenance with it. I have some ideas and so I am going to make a video about it. Be on the lookout
If you're in a slightly warmer part of the world, like I am, does this mean I'll be sowing later than if I was located in a colder zone? Because of the warmer temperaturen the seeds will germinate earlier? Mine is 9a.
Honestly I would think no. I would think go ahead soon and start but you may open them sooner. Maybe you would open the container once your temps get warm and let them continue to grow in the container opened up. Just an idea.

I'm in zone 6b and these videos you've done on Winter Sowing have unlocked a whole new world for me. THANK YOU!!
Oh that is WONDERFUL!!! I love this for you and for all of us!
I haven't had any luck winter sowing for the last 2yrs...BUT I'm going to try again 🤞🏾

I think that’s just the nature of the beast sometimes with winter sowing! Glad I’m not the only one :-)
Is it only for flowers or vegetables too? I love your videos. You’re very helpful. Thank you.😊

Only mist it if it’s dry through the top. I’ll discuss this in a video for you.
@ thank you

I believe in you
Herbs have been zero success, hopefully this will work
Will try Sunday or Monday
You've got this! And I'm here to help.
I usually start my seeds inside then put them in a portable greenhouse (Ohio zone 6), but I promise I will try a couple of these this year.
Now here is a warning...you may be hooked :-)
Beginner…I am going to follow you, I can do this!
You got this! I’m so so so excited for you!

Coming to you from Zone 9B here! Do we water the jugs? Asking for a friend....😬

You can do this with annuals, perennials and vegetables. I discuss this in the video I am posing on Monday/Tuesday so check it out.
I live an area that has terrible slug and snail issues. How would I keep them out of the jugs?

Anytime!
I am getting overwhelmed just picking out seeds. Should I pick a color pallet or just go for it, wanting a cottage style garden.

How much water needs in winter sowing seeds?
I’m in Zone 9a, we don’t get consistent cold weather, can I still do this???
