    It was so considerate of the writers to include the Macy/Anthony and Dylan/Jessica/Maggie storylines in the same episode. That way, when the Macy/Anthony storyline gets too tense, the boredom of the other one calms our heart rate.

      @annieo6527 6 місяців тому +2

      I agree! And this is actually a repetition of that scene - Anthony trying to take ad van tage of Macy in her own bedroom, but being interrupted. It's a nice plot symmetry, as well as being well acted and directed.

    • @FayeIL
      @FayeIL 6 місяців тому +4

      @@annieo6527This also aligns well with the night of Ivana’s murder. When he tells Macy how he made Ivana listen to him tell her how he was going to kill her, because he wanted to see her fead, he’s literally doing the same thing to Macy. When he kisses Macy in all the places he killed Ivana, he’s showing her where he’s going to shoot her. It’s that conflation of sex and violence again.
      The difference is that this time, the cycle will close the way it should have - with Anthony being stopped and his victim surviving. Anthony may have started the episode by purring “Ready or not, here comes Tony,” but it’s Anthony who doesn’t know what’s coming for him.

    • @annieo6527

      @@FayeIL yes, I interpreted this exactly the way you did! He is describing to Macy both his past mu rd er of Ivana, and the mu r d er of Macy that he is in the process of carrying out in the present.
      And I think that her realization that _this is what Anthony is doing_ is what makes Macy defy him. He has actually already _told_ her that he is going to k ill her regardless of what she does ("she told me she'd do anything - but she had to die"), and knowing this, she decides that she has nothing to lose, and refuses to get back on the bed with him. And this defiance of Macy's is when Anthony is beginning to lose control of the situation, because it creates a window of opportunity where Sally can step in and save Macy.

    *Anthony’s Showstopper*
    Anthony describing his plot to frame Thorne as, “It was as if I was designing a showstopper gown” (9:30) underscores the performative aspect of this scene. Both Anthony and Macy are artists (fashion designer/singer) putting on a show for each other (Macy pretending to be in love with him and Anthony pretending to still believe her). In this “show” Macy is both the scriptwriter (trying to get Anthony to say the words) and the sound mixer (trying to record those words), while Anthony is like the director, giving her instructions on where to stand/sit/lie, ordering her to open the door so the scene can begin (lights! cameras! action!), and then finally attempting to “s h * * t the ending.” This fits with their different roles as artists: Anthony is responsible for the visual aspects of the show while Macy is responsible for its sonic aspects. And there’s even a sense that they are onstage, with Sally waiting “behind the curtain” and a reference to the original storyteller who brought Macy and Anthony together (Sheila) when Anthony recalls the night they met: “You don’t remember do you? You were too drunk!” This show has always done a good job of weaving art and performance into its storylines, a show within a show, and here they’ve done it once again for Anthony’s “last act.”

    • @annieo6527
      @annieo6527 6 місяців тому +5

      I just wrote a similar comment - I _knew_ you would catch the showstopper reference!
      Of course, this scene is very much connected to that night that Macy and Anthony first met (and is in fact a mirror scene of it - it's number 2 on my palindrome list from episode 1956), and another thing that reinforces this connection is when Macy _asks for a drink._
      Either we are to assume that it is non-alcoholic champagne (which would be a plausible but bo ring low-stakes explanation), or, which is a more interesting interpretation, she is actually asking for _alcohol_ to signal to Anthony that she is throwing caution to the wind and giving in to her "dark side" (also this interpretation works better as a throwback to when they first met and she was too drunk to keep him from taking ad van tage of her, as well as a contrast to their first night as "roommates" in episode 2025 when Anthony offered her a drink and she declined - a contrast also reinforced by the dramatic change in wardrobe for Macy and Anthony here, compared to episode 2025).
      But on closer observation, Macy's lips _barely touch_ the champagne glass during their toast - a perfect metaphor for her plans for this evening with Anthony. In order to win this dangerous game, Macy needs to get as close as she can to evil, and appear to embrace it, without actually letting it control her. She must, as the Bib li cal quote says, "be sober, be vigilant" when fighting the devil.
      (And, incidentally, when she was battling alcoholism two years ago this was actually referred to on the show as her "fighting the devil", so in a sense, "_she's done this before,_ which is what we are reminded of by the inclusion of champagne in this scene. Anthony knows this too, which frames his willingness to humor her "last request" by letting her lose her battle with alcoholism just before he intends to unalive her as truly diabolical.)

Anthony's final scenes where he completely unravels are wayyyy more potent than the pretty lame way they finally unravelled Sheila (from Lauren's near drowning to James' kidnapping to Lauren taking 5 minutes to tell Eric and steph about Sheila, to Sheila's farewell at the Forresters, to Eric still not believing Sheila was dangerous, it was more comedic than nail biting).

      I agree Trish! Even the way its directed and shot (Annie just wrote a great post about the camerawork) makes this scene more harrowing. And the actors are playing it straight for drama and terror, whereas Lauren was walking right up to Sheila and mocking her as if she wasn't holding a 🔫. And like you said the lead up and logistics of Sheila's goodbye party didn't make sense whereas here it does. One big difference: here it's only Sally and Macy and you can believe then how difficult it would be to get the 🔫 away from Anthony whereas that large group in Stephanie's house could've easily taken down Sheila (not to mention the battallion of cops outside!).

    There is some nice suggestive camerawork in the Macy/Anthony scenes - from the narrowing closeups on their faces as they both talked about discovering each other's secrets (in episode 2089), to Macy ly ing on the bed as Anthony's dark shadow passes over her body, to each of them hiding their wea p on of choice (her tape recorder and his 🔫) on their respective bedside tables. The lighting of Macy and Anthony on the bed is very sharp with extreme contrasts between light and darkness, like stage spotlights, giving the entire scene a surreal feel (because there is _no such light source in the room)._
    Also, the view from the bedroom window is identical to the view from Sally's apartment (the El Royale building) - indicating Sally's proximity, and her watching over Macy throughout the scene.

      Even something like at the 1:00 minute mark where we get Anthony leaning against the door, then we cut to the 🔫 in his hand, then the camera _moves with_ the 🔫 over to the Anthony's hand on the door handle before cutting back to a tighter closeup of Anthony's f a c e. That kind of camera movement is easy to take for granted in these classic episodes but you don't get any of that in the modern episodes. Today they would just do a wide shot of Anthony at the door for his whole scene.

    • @annieo6527

      @@NewYorkNick0607 yes, you are right! So much thought went into the camera work in that moment alone, and the entire episode is like this - every camera angle is deliberately chosen to steer our attention in the right direction.
      The music cues also reinforce this. There is a very effective moment at 10:44 where the background music changes to a slower pace with repeated bass notes just as Macy asks Anthony "how did you do it?", prompting the most incriminating part of his confession. It's as if the music illustrates Macy's tension as she listens to Anthony's words with bated breath, and once he has confessed, the tense music continues to signal that the point of no return is passed - having given Macy her recording, Anthony will now have no choice but to use the 🔫.

      Yes, and it is quite satisfying, after watching Anthony control her like a puppet throughout the past two episodes, to see her stand up to him and basically check mate him (even though she knows it will probably cost her her own life). Like I wrote in another post, Macy is doing what she did in episode 1709 when she sang to him that he's "Never gonna get it". Only this time she does it _at g u n point._
      I agree this feels like a completely different (and better) show than the other storylines. This feels like a film noir or a Hitchcock thriller.

    *Never Gonna Get It*
    I wrote in episode 2088 how closely Anthony's soliloquy corresponded to Shakespeare's Othello (Act V, Scene II), with the "Put out the light" references and Anthony reflecting on his own sinister intentions.
    This bedroom scene continues where Anthony's soliloquy left off, with Macy as Desdemona in a white nightgown (which is usually what directors make Desdemona wear for this scene because of how it signifies innnocence). From then on, the Macy/Anthony scene follows the outline of the Shakespeare scene - Othello desiring physical intimacy with Desdemona one last time before unaliving her, Desdemona inviting Othello to come to bed, the cat-and-mouse conversation where Othello tries to get Desdemona to admit her be t rayal but she denies it, Desdemona's initial confusion gradually turning into terror at the mention of the handkerchief (Macy's tape recorder) and Othello's accusations that Desdemona loves Cassio instead of him. Desdemona trying to plead with Othello once she realizes what he is about to do, and finally Othello's attempt on her life.
    Of course the most obvious parallel is psychological - like Othello, Anthony is a man in love who is nevertheless capable of k i lling the woman he loves if he believes she has been untrue to him. Anthony's motive is clearly not to get away with his previous cr ime, but to punish Macy, regardless of the consequences for himself.
    And this scene also shows how the roles of Othello and Desdemona have shifted in this storyline - I described in episode 2008 how Thorne and Ivana reenaced their own version of the same Otello scene, with Thorne as Othello, Ivana as Desdemona, and the purple stationery as the handkerchief.
    On the other hand, unlike Othello, Anthony is not a psychologically complex human being, but an archetype - he is in the Othello _position_ but still has the personality of _Iago_ - a character closely related to Mephistopheles in Faust. I described in episode 2088 how Thorne's plea that Macy not "cross the line" can be understood in terms of a "deal with the devil" scenario. Macy mustn't sleep with Anthony because it's the equivalent of "selling her soul". And it is very telling that at that crucial moment when Anthony demands that Macy get back on the bed, she _refuses_ and instead defies him by choosing death. She now _knows_ who she is dealing with and that she can't save herself by agreeing to his terms. But it is actually this refusal that _will_ save her, because when Macy gets away from the bed, she unconsciously places herself within Sally's reach.
    There is a very similar instance in Goethe's play Faust, where Mephistopheles offers Gretchen a way to save herself from a death sen tence, and she refuses. Mephistopheles then exclaims that this means that she is do o med, while an off-stage (celestial) voice objects that she is in fact saved (kind of like Anthony sees Macy as lost at the end, but Sally objects).
    Like any Mephistophelian villain, Anthony's ultimate goal isn't actually to unalive Macy but to _pos sess_ her. So even though Macy has given up hope and is telling Anthony to unalive her, this act of defiance also takes away Anthony's plot control and deprives him of his ultimate victory. It is clear because when he finally pulls the tr i g g er to end her life, _at her own request,_ his face expresses not triumph but _fu ri ous defeat_ - in that moment Anthony realizes he has lost Macy and that (like Macy sang to him in episode 1709) he's *Never Gonna Get It.*

    @annieo6527 6 місяців тому +7

    Nick - Anthony just confirmed your reading from yesterday about him being the artist/director - here he literally compares the unalivement to designing a showstopper gown!
    And when he is narrating Ivana's unalivement to Macy, how he told Ivana what was going to happen to her because he wanted to see the fear in her eyes, how she pleaded with him and said she'd do anything, but in the end she had to die, he is simultaneously narrating _Macy's unalivement,_ or rather, how he pictures that it will play out. This link is reinforced when he plays back the part of the recording where he says that he "wanted to see the fear in Ivana's eyes" to Macy, in order to see the fear in _Macy's_ eyes. And Macy _does_ plead with him, obediently playing Ivana's role as assigned to her by Anthony, until she starts "reading ahead" in the script to the part where she dies at the end regardless of what she does, and _rejects the script._ Suddenly, it is Macy giving Anthony stage direction instead, and his last words to her, "Have it your way!", signal that Anthony is no longer in control of the plot - _Macy_ is.
