I'm not a surfer, but watching this brought me joy. A bunch of people from different walks of life connecting through a shared love of surfing. That's what it's all about.
Well, surfing is actually quite a a individualist sport, you don't practice it in group, very far from the usual cliche of the "soul surfer" with the rasta hairs and the whole sharing philosophy. Most surfers are basically just sports men who wants to surf alone, far from the crowd. Which is normal, knowing that a crowded surfspot is dangerous as hell and annoying because there is always someone on your way.
I'm an exchange student in Munich right now, and happen to go to school a block away from the Eisbach. Can confirm that this is an insane spot, and watching is incredible. There is no judgement for people who only last a couple seconds in the wave; it's just accepted that they're learning. It's super cool and trippy to see this familiar place in a VANs youtube video, and even recognize one of the surfers (guy at 0:29). Today in both of the 15 minute breaks at school, I walked to the Eisbach (it's February btw) and saw a couple dedicated surfers practicing over and over. I love the Eisbach and will miss it a ton when I go back home to the US
Now I know why I saw a kid with a surfboard when I was in Munich! 11:00 The air on that first attempted kickflip was insane! Having grown up near the beach and surrounded by a surf culture, it's amazing and joyful to see that you don't need the ocean to develop a love of the surf. So good seeing people from weird and wonderful places shredding waves. Awesome vid and series. Loving it.
I live in Munich, you get used to it, people using public transportation or just walking through the city in a full wetsuit and with surfboard. The community that surfs there regularly is in the 4 digits, it goes on all day every day, many only come once a week or every other week, and mostly people do it only for a couple of hours at a time. So when there are 40 people there on nice days, do the math. There are some surf shops in Munich. It is big.
Fuck that's one of my worst fears stepping on a sharp pin or got forbid an actual used in needle in water you can't see through or sand at the beach, we used to swim in a little river as kids and I was always worried about fishing hooks and lures but luckily never had to worry about used needles coz it was out of the way. People who throw their used needles away like that are scum
Was slow to click on this one because hey it's a river.. probably kinda lame.. like watching kayakars (gag). Now it's one of my fave surf videos! Always fun seeing pros getting schooled by the locals. Dylan and Tanner are such good sports. So much soul here. Prost !
Same vibe, different tribe...just like a backyard mini ramp session. I can say I'm a veteran skateboarder, 30+ years, and this video has me so stoked up. I love that they slightly modified the wave profile with the submerged beam. Reminds me of fixing up spots with street signs or concrete. I've only surfed once, so I shouldn't say anything, but one of my favorite things to do to stoke the kids up is to start a run by finger flipping board into the ramp. I was hoping I'd see one of these guys do that. Can't stop watching this. In Calgary Alberta, close to where I live, there is a standing wave on the Bow river in the city. Never been, but surely it's nothing like this. Really impressed and a little intrigued as to what could be done on the river flowing through my town.
So nice to see a community emerging from such an 'opportunity spot'. How cool would it be to have more of these spots, its just good for everything, community, exercise, environment and if you are in Germany you can chill next to the river with excellent German beers, that you can see in the end of the video.
@@TheBuuurg recreating spots like this? Do you know how that is possible? Must be certain river speeds. Im from the Netherlands wondering if it might be possible here.
These are fantastic. Skater here, obviously there's a surf legacy, and cool seeing it repaid (kickflip/shuvs/etc) :) But been enjoying these just for what they are. Thank you.
from 4:25 to "That's how gentlemen ride"...fn hilarious This is a ludicro-genius idea for a channel And these videos are awesome... the stories, people, filming, music. The vibe. More please.
Awesome to see the crowd hanging out and surfing the Eisbach, and yeah it's really cold. I used to surf there when I was living in Munich in the early 90's. Not much of a crowd back then, just a few locals. Grüße an alle Münchner. 🤙
cool to see my back yard :-) There is a second wave a bit down the river, it is a bit more domesticated. And the really cool stuff is the surfing goes on even in the deepest winter, -10 deg and snow all around. A sight to behold! there is something very Munich-like about the wave: it was forbidden for a long-long time actually to ride the wave, just in Munich people tend to ignore laws that do not make sense, like that one or having the dogs on the leash in the (nearby) park. Kind of common sense beats literal law; the Munich way of life. And of course, the best beer, Augustiner Helles.
This grom could be the first world champion surfer who learned on a river wave. Because it’s a limited set up it causes you to learn in a much more technical style. We’re going to see some crazy tricks in the future from river born surfers. I’ve never been to Europe but when I do finally go this will be my first stop. Mahalo Boys 🤙
Wow this actually did the spot justice! Tao is a true local, I've seen him surfing every time im in Munchen, dude rips! They should've done a montage of the entire park because English Garden is next level vibes.
those river waves are like this everyday ?? u can go there whenever u like ? i did just found on the vacation that i would love to surfing and im living just 50km from Munich ... so it is free to go everyday ? or do u need special weather for it ?
@@marekbabik2791 it's going like that every day, especially in the summer months! There's another one further down the river but it's less rideable. It will be very crowded all day so that's the only gripe!
Pretty sweet. Kick flips w a surfboard!! that’s gonna be the next surfing evolution. Can’t wait to see someone do it at pipe or chopoo. Pretty cool that treasure hunter doesn’t try and sell the stuff he finds, rather waits for the rightful owners to claim it. I wish everyone was so selfless. Keepum coming!!!
Yeah, great coverage of my homespot i was one of the first surfers there making my grade at a neraby school in 1980 i´m still riding, but only cruising and surfing mainly my age in seconds, what means around a minute on the wave or shorter if Tao drops in :-)
