Iran's Reinvigorated Space Program Makes Final Rocket Launch of 2021

  • Iran managed to sneak in the last rocket launch attempt of 2021, a Simorgh rocket carrying a trio of satellites, which appears to have come close to orbital velocity, but not close enough to stay in orbit. And based on recent events in the country it's very likely that this is just the first of many as newly elected president Ebrahim Raisi has publicly stated he wants to reinvigorate the country's space programs. This comes in marked contrast to the much more low profile space launch activities under Hassan Rouhani who had been much more careful about international relations.
I say space programs because Iran has 2 independent groups working on developing space launch vehicles, the Iranian Space Agency and the Revolutionary Guard have both launched satellites with vehicles of their own design, although there is a great deal of commonality with the country's ballistic missile capabilities.

Like I want them to succeed and develop working rockets because it does seem to genuinely just be for civilian purposes and it's kinda good for everyone if more countries have access to space and also just because it's really impressive for such a relatively small country to develop these things based on so little. Also, I imagine it is more a matter of, there is significant technological advancement when society as a whole dedicates itself to one purpose or several key purposes. In the case of war, that is defeating the enemy, thus large amounts of funding and personnel are dedicated to creating new tech for that purpose. The moon landings had a similar effect, a massive amount of American science and soviet science was dedicated to one goal, space exploration, and that had enormous technological breakthroughs. I imagine that, once society has something to fight for or to believe in, it's rate of progress in that field (and as a consequence related fields) massively increases. Right now, with no such objective made clear, society spends small amounts in numerous lesser fields because the only source of funding is private investors, who all have different ideas on what is good to research.

The Japanese small launcher, the Epsilon is pretty much a ballistic missile in civilian drag. It's all-solid fuel so it's eminently storeable and it can be launched by an operating crew of eight people. They've test-fired it a few times, they know it works and it could easily carry a nuclear weapon in a re-entry vehicle to anywhere on the planet, a true ICBM.
Japan, although totally committed to not developing or possessing nuclear weapons has the technical capability to have nukes in a short period of time if they feel it necessary, with breeder reactors and spent fuel processing facilities. What they did lack was their own nuclear weapon delivery platform until Epsilon came along (the H1 and H2 were too big and clumsy). See also Berlusconi's Bottle Rocket (Vega) and the Ariane P80 boosters, a product of Italy's own aborted nuclear weapons development program.

Excellent point you are making regarding the ballistic missile program; as an Iranian nationalist, please note, (not an Islamist or belief in Islamic Republic religious philosophy) I am fundamentally opposing the Islamic Republic apparatus as it stands today and for the last 43 years. However, 110% I advocate Iran space and military technology in any way, form, or shape regardless of who runs the country today or in the future. As I believe those technologies are the property and asset of the Iranian people, Finally, it is not European or American, or Israeli's business; they have all the dangerous and horrendous weapons at their disposal; furthermore, they did not shy away from using them in the last 60 or 70 years until today. Therefore, it makes them unqualified to judge Iranian technological progress. I also believe the current political system in the country must start enumerating the requisite qualities of a consistent and coherent strategy with Iranian people directly to confront violent extremism, such as political and insatiable economic greed and, indeed, outside and inside the country religious ideologies with pugnacious intentions against Iranian interests.

Iran has a stunning engineering culture. Most countries are largely de-industrialised and no other middle eastern country has any kind of manufacturing industry but Iran has a decent automotive industry, has decent robotics programs, it can build locally designed guided missiles, anti-air missiles, basic jet engines, passively electronically scanned array radars. It can build integrated air defense systems and fully rebuild 3rd gen fighters, it can buid solid and liquid ballastic missiles and full space launch vehicles. It's a very impressive achievement. The Gregorian calendar is, by historical twists and turns, sort of based on the winter solstice, so...

You need to give us a little bit of credit
Because we only have 30 years knowledge in ballistic missiles and we are pretty much alone in developing it
And the developing costs money but we are the most sanctioned country in the history, so.... its 10× harder for us than a country like India 🇮🇳 .

This reminds me China’s “两弹一星” project, aka “two projectile one star”, more accurate translation is two bomb (atomic and hydrogen bomb) and one satellite (Chinese space program). Ballistic missile wasn’t part of goal although one may argue rocket technology can be easily adapted to missiles.

It's actually A-bomb, Missles, and Satellites (where atomic bomb includes both fissel and thermal-nuclear types). So it's exactly the same as the Iranian goal here.
