Decoding Iran's New 'Qased' Rocket and the 'Noor' Satellite

- Earlier this week Iran made their first successful satellite launch in a long time using a new rocket design named 'Qased'. What's most striking is that this is a miliatry launch vehicle using new solid propellent motor which is more advanced than any they've flow before, and it might just be the first of many developments of the technology.

I just mention that Iran was under sanctions both scientifically and economically for 40 years, it's actually impressive to see them progress towards advancer technologies which means they dream big. still better than many other countries which weren't under 40 years of sanctions and yet don't dream as big as the Iranians do. Remember every big projects started small and simple.
I'm from Hongkong and i respect Iranians🌺
Iran's "dream" is the nuclear annihilation of Israel, Saudi Arabia and the United States. It is why the UN has embargoed them, it is why nobody except the Russians will sell them war parts. When a kid figures out how to play with matches, I don't congratulate him on his technical advancement.
@@Rutherford_Inchworm_III They maybe think the same about USA, if they dont develop nuklear weapon, USA and Israel will have an invasion plan for Iran, think about the situation the other way arround. We need to absolutely make this concept the standard response to seeing a drone. See a drone, walk backwards. I too will be doing this from now on.

The reversed shot at ~3min is a film industry standard. When shooting a “grand” “zooming out” shot, starting on the subject is a lot easier. But that would create a “zoom in” shot, so you just play the clip backwards to make it a “zoom out” shot. As it’s a lot easier for the drone to start on the target with the final shot already framed and in focus then fly away. Rather than staring high in the sky and trying to smoothly pilot up to the rocket’s mission patch. While also attempting to get the framing and focus right. In movies if they use this technique they will often overlap shots and use CGI to remove any weird motions in the background, like a personal walking backwards...
Glad I could add a little something 😄. As I’m a fan of the channel but not a rocket scientist

If they attack Iran, they will lose economic war to China faster. If they get out from middleast and start a siege around china(like what they did for Iran), they will lose middleast for a long time, but they just have just have 10~12 years before they run out of oil. 80% of world energy is in Eurasia, but US fuel will end soon. They don't have enough time for solving Iran, Russia, China (India will be another one in next ten years) at the same time. First it's not logical to use money of a bankrupted country with $26.5Trillions of debt(till now! )when whole their exports is 3 Trillions dollars, then it's not economcally cost effective to trade with US when it's separated by two oceans and have no technological advantage over China,... , it's never was cheap , and also no one will sell them its oil when there is huge need for oil in Asian economies.

Its quite unfortunate that most people confuse a country's government with a country's people. Just because a government is corrupt, incompetent and morally bankrupt doesn't mean the people are the same. Iran had a long-standing tradition of higher education before the Ayatollah came - universities and knowledge don't just suddenly vanish when a regime changes.
It might be a launch platform for ICBMs, you never know.

Good analysis by Scott. Let me add something more to it. This successful launch by Iran will have far serious ramifications. The success for Iran is not only the 2nd stage but the 3rd stage also. In fact the previous few satellite launch failures of Iran were not due to the 2nd but due to 3rd stage which here in Iran's case is the kick motor stage or the stage which I would call space engine stage. Because this 3rd stage kicks the satellite into the required orbit once the satellite reaches the required height. Iran has used Saman 3rd or kick stage and within this 3rd stage Arash 24 motor has been used which is a solid fuel-based motor, not a liquid fuel-based motor as Scott mentioned. This new Arash motor is a significant improvement on Arash 22 or may be Arash 23 motors. It may be used by Iran to kick satellites into low earth orbits but also for orbital transfers and Iran may now think of transferring satellites into very high orbits such as geostationary orbits at 36000 km by using this 3rd or kick stage after scaling up. The second great achievement for Iran is carbon fiber-based 2nd stage known as Salman which can be used not only in satellite rockets but also if Iran wants in very long range or intercontinental ballistic missiles. These two achievements are like a revolution for Iran space and missile programs.
This Rocket have 3 Engine and Iran 🇮🇷 successfully sent military satellite Nour on the orbit

What's interesting to me is the thermal imaging technology presented here. Iran has recently gone public in announcing their domestically made(by a military subsidiary) fever scanning camera to be deployed in the country.
In this video they show a long range tracking camera showing 1100mm focal length and give us the indication of 0.5° fov. If that is diagonal on a 4:3 sensor you can deduce the pixel pitch given a commonly used resolution such as 240x320, 288x384, 480x640 or any off sized like 512 etc. Gonna take a look into it tomorrow

As you've said, once they replace that first stage, the launcher _really_ becomes interesting.
what's the persian for "if it isn't broken, don't fix it?"
Once the Islamic Republic of Iran makes a viable solid fueled first stage, they will have a functioning long range ballistic missile. They need this to achieve a military deterrent with Israel & Saudi Arabia, as this would launch an EMP
device [thermonuclear], which allows them to level the field if war breaks out. As Iran can stand up to Israel & Saudi Arabia if no high tech weapons systems are involved, hence the need for a way to launch a nuke into low earth orbit.
[ note their faith prevents them from using thermonuclear weapons on their adversaries populations, however their faith allows them to use an EMP to disable their adversaries modern weaponry...]
@@davidhollenshead4892 [note] ... which in a strange twisted way is actually a good thing... i suppose...
(as far as nuclear warfare - or warfare in general - can ever be a good thing)
Not many nations in the world can deploy satellites without any outside assistance. There's only 9 or 12 at the most. Now Iran has joined that list. Soon they'll put a human in space and after that who knows. The remarkable thing is that they've managed to do this despite sanctions. North Korea was also able to build a viable missile program and they can now target the continental US, all despite sanctions. If this proves anything, it's that sanctions don't work. The only two possibilities are war or negotiations.
They're probably being so open because they know there's no point keeping secrets. This is more of a "Look what we can do!"

The form factor limits the focal length -- I love that kind of insight/simplification/bounding. Thanks!
Nice analysis -- and it is fascinating that Iran has shown so much technical data about this launch. The first French satellite Astérix was launched in 1965 using a somewhat similar Diamant launcher -- roughly the same size with one liquid + 2 solid stages, (though Diamant first stage engine did not even use a turbopump, and undoubtedly had a much simpler control system.)
Regarding resolution limits of cubesat cameras. The diameter of the lens/mirror sets the limit of its resolution. One can make pretty much arbitrarily long focal length even in a small size objective that would fit on a cube sat (using folded light path, Barlow lens, etc), but that would not provide any higher resolution than the diffraction limit set by the diameter of the lens/mirror.
How can you mention Astérix and DIamant without mentioning that the fuel was organic Southern France-sourced turpentine!
It's just a facade to make it seem like they're doing it for science. Until they chill out, I don't want them having high tech missile systems. Just like Kim.

Iran shifting to SRBs makes sense, they are more economical to run, powerful and pretty straightforward compared to metallurgy and machining necessary for liquid fueled first stage engines.
There is also the military applications of SRBs, American ICBMs are SRBs after all.
Given that their real goal is to develop ballistic missiles to attack Israel, and maybe even America, those are exactly the applications they are concerned with.
Exactly a solid rocket motor when designed well can be stored for long periods of time and them launched within minutes whereas even with storable liquid propellants more work is needed and you can't just leave it fueled ad infinitum.

Damn this video is a Detailed one. Good job
This is just the start. I am sure iran will put a satellite with ultra high detail imaging system eventually. Also considering how small the rocket is this is probably the cheapest satellite launch in human history.
How are you sure they don't have ultra high detail imaging system yet??
This was a demonstration of an ICBM. The camera is just on board to prove that it works.
@@iranparast3844 An ultra high resolution camera needs to be much larger than the rocket can carry. That's just basic physics.
Cheapest satelite launch was done by India

honest to god I didn't knew that Iran's space program is getting strong. Successful launch means a lot. baby steps like this I see iran is dominating in middle east within couple of years.
another awesome part is they did all these with their own technology. Kudos to those scientists.
great analysis, thank you!
Love Iran ❤ from Iran
Looks like they had better coverage of a launch than ULA :)
Very interesting stuff, thanks Scott for explaining.
Nice bit of rocket explanation thank you Mr Manley .
The result after 40 years of sanction together with an all against one war, plus other negative strain on the country, so lifting my hat and pay respect to the dormant lion!
A country with very nice and enthusiastic people who are keen to improve their country despite disproportionate obstacles from big bully & their stooges in the west!
Congratulations to all the Iranian people!
Great progress by Iran! IRAN CARRY ON STRONG!
LOVED the garden chair analysis! :D
Once again Great Video ! :)
Never thought of seeing a video of this launch on your channel
Hope Iran makes progress and builds larger and more capable rockets in the future and only uses them for scientific purposes
Hope they even send astronauts to space one day
They will make more rockets and if big bully & their stooges in the west attacks them, Iran will kick their asses and hang them by their balls
everybody think they gangsta until the ak-27 starts spraying
lol
Trevor Allen ☆ when upgrade to 47?
They'll use modified AKs on these satellites and shoot "down" (yes i know you wouldn't shoot directly down while in orbit)
@@iCore7Gaming You can shoot directly backwards and the perigee would lower, but with 900 m/s of dV is that enough to actually deorbit?
I think a couple people missed the oxidizer reference, Trevor
I'm Iranian Scott,
Nice video, great analysis as always.
IRGC sent that sat not Iranian Space Agency, IRGC is basically a separate military entity.
our best wishes to our brothers in the Islamic Republic of Iran .
I love your videos so informative. Id really like you to do a video on the amateur side of observing satellites like mentioned in this video. Kind of a dummies guide to how to get started as its something id be interested in. If you could that would be great!
Thank you for your detailed explanation.
I love these videos because I go and Google all the words I don't know and then I can wait for someone to mention Iranian satellite launch technology and I'm fully prepared
Acid and kerosene again, as per usual for them. Its high NO2 based acid for sure, so 80/20 RFNA is likely. Nearly 100% positive though that its kerosene or similar long chained hydrocarbon.
SRM looks to be in-line with the Star SRM. Maybe a touch smaller. Definitely a game changer for Iran and rather surprising.
Great notes.
What would one use other than Kerosene as an energetic hydrocarbon, and why? I think the reasons for not using octane or decane are obvious...
@@HuntingTarg Gasoline, diesel, various alcohols of the methyl and hydroxyl types, turpentine (or many other various turpenes), aniline, furfuryl alcohol, etc. The latter 3 all being hypergolic with nitric acid >83% generally, with MOX and >87% in the white. Many others. Its a oxidizer so it will increase the rate of combustion for all flammable materials. Some more so than others.
I agree completely on that being a kerosene/acid engine using some kind of AKS oxidizer. Probably uses UDMH of Tonka as a starter.
@@seanbaskett5506 There is no need to use hydrazine as an ignition source. If they had access and handling equipment to UDMH, then they would have a far higher impulse fuel source and a means to use it. They use kerosene and acid because they are cut off from the majority of the world due to sanctions so what we consider relatively normal in the aerospace industry, is an exotic to them. Thats why they use normal hydrocarbons with acid as propellants. While kerosene (or similar) and acid has high density impulse (which is good), it really is not a great performer when you are trying to go to space. So while you have density impulse working for you, you need to carry more of it because its a lower performer. They use it, because its all they have readily available to them.
For ignition, they likely use a simple pyrotechnic ignitor. Its very very very very very common. Pyrophorics and hypergolic pre-ignition fluid is more complex so not likely used. Though, it could be. The 3rd stage likely uses a GOX/fuel flare tube (torch) that emanates from the center of the injector for ignition.
Thanks this was a really good video.
Excellent! I learned a lot
Well done Iran 🇮🇷
this is achievements for all muslims ❤ the name of this satellite is Nour 1 its means second is in coming 🤩
I would like to mention as an Iranian that we do not like to have our religion guessed, we're not all muslims. Please don't make further assumptions.
@@hazardousrusty4259 Iran is 90% Muslim and its called the Islamic Republic of iran
Yacine Yeah because the people are forcibly born muslims, and cant change religion or they'll be hanged. I am an Iranian myself and you should listen to me, not your statics. It is called the Islamic Republic of Iran because of a revolution, not because the majority of the people take pride in a religion.
@@yacine9809 the vast majourity of the young populace is actually not really* muslim. the restraint of freedom can mean its dangerous switching to a different religion, or even being gay , which will land you in prison or be hanged. unfortunately the government is very evil.

Good and interesting review, as always. Well, almost always. ;-)
I keep remembering 1957 when the Russians put Sputnik into orbit. It wasn't Sputnik that mattered, it was the fact that if a country can put something into orbit it will also be capable of launching an ICBM at it's enemies.
@Bridge Yes, I watched it several times. Suspicion is a hard thing to over come, unless something dramatic happens to change people's minds.
USSR announced on 21 August of 1957 that they have successfully tested an ICBM. In the same summer they have announced that they were going to launch a satellite (as a part of International Geophysical Year) and gave exact radio-frequencies that would be used by its transmitters. But only when Sputnik was actually launched on the 4th of October, everybody in the West took it seriously -- as though it was a sudden and a shocking thing with no warning. (In reality, Soviets did not tell the whole truth about the ICBM -- the rocket itself was indeed tested successfully, but the warhead burned up on re-entry. It was not yet an operational system. While they were re-designing the reentry vehicle, the rockets that have already been assembled were allowed to be re-purposed for "civilian" experiments, and that is how Sputnik was launched.)
"Actually, It's a tumbling webcam in space"
Thank god there was no national space agencies to make fun of us back when we were shooting useless junk up into space just because we could.
Thank god Iran has the infidel world to provide them with modern technology so that they can make these incredible achievements and join people from the middle of the last century.

Greetings from America my friend! My ex-wife has been to Iran several times for business from China and said Iranians are the most friendly and hospitable people she has ever met. She also said there's a lot of American fast food copies in Iran like Pizza hut and KFC even with the Col! Take care.
Thanks ❤️
I’m really happy to hear that
And about the fast food she’s certainly right
You know we here have “mashdonald”

Yeah about that
So in 2 years from now we are having an election back here in Iran in a high possibility the government that’s going to be in charge will be really really close to IRGC therefore probably the civilian space program will not be continued and all of the budget will go for the military space program and I know and you all know it’s just about the rocket itself and there’s not much focus on satellites how ever the future satellites that are going to be lunched will also be used for communication(for drones and planes)
When India asked Russia for cryogenic engines Russia declined citing US sanctions, we had to do it ourselves. And now I find soviet engines have proliferated everywhere. Russians are like, lets destroy our own satellite launch market!.Anyways, it takes bravery for Iran to have pulled this off.
for that reason russia is selling their engines to US. once that stops your market will be open again ;)
It is much more important to Russia that Iran can defend itself.
Great achievement for Iran,,,,,, congratulations
