Noooo, we don’t think all Swedish people behave this way on a regular basis 😂 the same way we who live in Texas don’t all put ourselves in situations where we meet a chainsaw-wielding maniac 😜 Loved hearing your translations!
I would say it's not entirely unreasonable to be afraid of Texas, mainly because of shootings, covid, and the failing power grid, but being attacked by an inbred deformed cannibal with a chainsaw should not be on your list of worries. Likewise, in Sweden, I'm perhaps slightly wary about the possibility of moose attacks or peeing myself because I don't have any cash to pay to use a public restroom, but I have no concern that someone is going to menstruate in my beverage or sew me into a bear carcass.
@@PuppetMaster-Blade Well, you know, if you're running with a chainsaw and you trip, it's a bad day for you. Mama always told me, never run with chainsaws.
Midsommar is the perfect visual take on cults and how they look so bright and clean and beautiful, while underneath the craziness is just waiting to snatch and destroy you. While the movie is more about grief and mourning and ugly breakups from neglect and/or gaslighting in relationships, the cult theme fits perfectly because of how easy it is for vulnerable people to be caught up in the illusion of a family, love and kindness that cults sell at a higher cost than you can ever imagine.
It's also a really good demonstration of how brainwashing can work. After the cliff scene I was just as weirded out by the cult as our main characters, but as time went on I caught myself kind of liking the group in a weird messed up way. Like I caught myself smiling during the dancing scene, I felt happy when Dani won, I felt like the women crying with Dani was actually helping somehow, and when Dani smiled during the end I was involuntarily smiling with her. I had to remind myself that this is not a happy ending lol. I feel like they brainwashed me along with the main character hahaha
I disagree that the culture represented is a take on modern cults. This isn’t a new age cult. This is a very fringe subculture, but the movie makes it clear that it’s a remnant of a very old and ancient culture, a community with continuity of thousands of years that has managed to adapt itself to the modern world (and to keep its horrifying practices secret). There isn’t “brainwashing” going on. The community members are brought up with these beliefs, beliefs of what is natural, what is acceptable, what is desirable. You are probably the same in a way. What you consider normal is how you were raised. Some of the behaviors you consider normal might be horrifying to someone of a different culture. Which is not to condone the behaviors of this society. I don’t think murder is OK, whether it’s ritualized in a religious ceremony or state imposed violence. One can detach oneself from cultural bias without abandoning morals and ethics. But interpret the film however you wish. I think this movie goes well beyond your interpretation which is overly simple. What I see in it is a more subtle and nuanced criticism of western culture and our detachment and alienation from our inner lives and painful emotions. But I also see this movie as a break up movie. Imagine for a moment that it all takes place in a dream. The rituals represent deep processes that allow Dani to gain some inner peace with regard to breaking up with her shitty boyfriend.

Actually, Ättestup is only mentioned in one literary source from the medieval period, and historians generally agree that it was probably never a real thing, just a myth. Similarly to how people think iron maidens were used for torture in the medieval period, but it was actually just invented by the English tourism industry in the 1800's to make the medieval era seem more depraved than it actually was.
I love this movie! And I’m super interested in Sweden believe it or not lol. I know it’s not like this, but seeing your reaction makes me wonder what life is like there
Great and quality vid reaction!. I was so amazed when you said that this was your first "horror film" ever. Also, I was really, really concerned about you lol. Cause I watched a lot of movies in general and A LOT of horror movies in my life and this one is definitely one of the most potent, gruesome, sick and disturbing ones I've ever watched, its easily on my top 5 of the sickest horror movies ever. And hearing that this is going to be your first one at the beginning of the vid almost made me have a heart attack lol. Though it really seemed that you went into it with a strong mindset and you didn't seem too disturbed at the end thankfully. Also besides a few ones almost all horror movies you'll come across after this one will be a lot weaker in terms of disturbing/scariness now that you started with this one lol, but that's an advantage, I think lmao.
No wayyyyyyyyy, this is so awesome! I can't wait to finish the video!!!! This has made my month and possibly year. Awwwwwwww, you said I have good taste (I think you were referencing me?) That is so niiceeeee, my goodness.
😂😂😂 great video 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻. The only part I never understood about the movie was the food after the dance. It was weird because it was moving and it had flies all over it. I just wonder what it and what it means...
Frickin frick! Lol. You’re too cute! When I first watched this movie I told myself I would never watch it again. But, then I watched it a couple more times. I’m not sure what it is, but this movie is genius to me in so many ways that I can’t explain! Just unlike anything I’ve ever seen. I think the fact is that it was so disturbing because it was all happening in the full light of day….such an uncommon thing for something so terrifying. But, yeah…disturbing and amazing in many many ways.
As a Brit that's been to Sweden twice a year since I was 18.. I really miss the place after watching, as weird as that sounds 😅. Love the Swedish people and the beauty of nature during midsummer :D
I loved how we just watched a goddamn brainwashing but everything was beautiful visually. I think Ari Aster was giving us a false sense of security with that choice. Haha..the man's insane. Florence Pugh was so mesmerizing I need more. 😍🥃
There’s a Norwegian film called Sauna that scared the bejeezus out of me,and I’m pretty immune to horror films. I’d be interested in your take on it, even though it’s Norway, and I’m well aware that Norway is not Sweden. Also, have you seen Broen, the Bridge, loved that series, and also Forbrydelsson, the great Danish show? Also, not Sweden, I know, but… and speaking of Smultron/Wild Strawberries, have your seen Ingmar Bergman’s masterpiece Wild Strawberries? If not, I’d be very interested in your reaction.
I’m very interested in films that are able to be psychologically disturbing without the assistance of nighttime atmosphere. My other choice would be the excellent Christopher Nolan film _Insomnia_ which incidentally was adapted from Scandinavian material and is also drenched in light from start to finish.
I also like films that are able to be scary without relying on the supernatural. There is no part in this movie that suggests the cults "spells" actually work, there are no demons that show up, none of the gods/spirits the cult believe in are actually doing anything. The horror in this film is much more realistic than most horror films in the sense that there is nothing magical or demonic about it. It's just a about a girl getting brainwashed by a group of people with weird beliefs, which is honestly scarier than stories about ghosts or demons in my opinion.
More specifically it looks like Allmoge, which is a style from about 1600s to 1900s everyday people (peak 1700s). The houses resemble Fäbodar which was cottages for summer grazing in about the same time period as allmoge, so it adds up. Even the region, Hälsingland, is even one of three core regions for allmoge and fäbodar.
I spend it with family/friends and we eat the typical Midsommar foods. We dress up in summer clothes and make flower crowns. And we stay up late and just talk (cause it’s so bright outside). When I was younger though I used to play games, dress the Maypole and dance around it. :)

The movie isn't about Sweden. It is set in Sweden, though not shot there. Unless you think this is how Sweden actually is. Ättestupa isn't a thing. Has never been a thing.
@@grisflyt Ättestupa definitely was a thing. You can visit them all over the country. You can even take tour of ättestupor. This is basic knowledge we learn from a young age and in school. Some remote areas used ättestupor as late as 1918 with case of individuals using them even to this day. That's why some of them are closed off to the public now.
I know a couple of swedish actors. May is in the series Clark(about the origen of the Stockholm syndrome, one of the elders is in the series Kälek och Anarki and the old man that jump off the cliff is in the documentary "The most beautiful boy in the world " it is about him actually.
I feel this film is a mixture of he’s not into you and the wicker man. Ari Aster said that he was going through a very difficult break up when he was making this film, so a lot of that stress and anxiety went into the film otherwise it would’ve just been a slasher apparently.
I was curious on how someone who was actually from Sweden would react to this film. Thanks for your input on this movie’s portrayal of the Midsommar Holiday.
If this really was your first proper horror film, I would love to see how you would react to stuff like Suspiria from 1977 or, my personal all time favorite horror Film, Black Christmas from 1974....

An odd film. Some of the elements are interesting, but by the end I wasn't clear what the film was really trying to say. Perhaps the film is supposed to be about "the journey" rather than "the destination". I know I'm not the first person to say this, but the film did remind me in some ways of "The Wicker Man" even though they're actually very different films.
@@acceber. Also if you are enjoying watching horror movies now, I recommend to watch Halloween (2018) based off of the 1977 original version.

I know it’s not like this, but seeing your reaction makes me wonder what life is like there
Same as anywhere else
You poor lovely creature!!! I feel so bad for you!! The worst is over (I guess!). I hope you decide to do a few comedies to balance things out!!!! 😜
Hahahaha 😆
@@acceber. I'm glad you liked it!!!! 😄
Awwww haha, don't worry, I really enjoyed it! :) and thank you so much!!

Happy Midsommar Rebecca! ❤️🥰😊
Tack så mycket! Glad Midsommar James! 🥰💐💖

Omg you are so adorable! And I agree I felt the same way as you when i saw it..
You Swedes are crazy! Think I'll go to Norway instead ;-)
Hahaha noooo xD
As a Brit that's been to Sweden twice a year since I was 18.. I really miss the place after watching, as weird as that sounds 😅. Love the Swedish people and the beauty of nature during midsummer :D
I loved how we just watched a goddamn brainwashing but everything was beautiful visually. I think Ari Aster was giving us a false sense of security with that choice. Haha..the man's insane. Florence Pugh was so mesmerizing I need more. 😍🥃
I think this movie it’s a great one to react to, but a little too much if you’re not used to this kind of movies, great video 👍🏻
21:40 i always enjoy these extra "did you know?" moments
you know, without the human sacrificing this festival would actually be pretty cool
No I haven’t watched them (just seen some scenes from The Bridge). Sounds interesting, thank you so much for the recommendations! :D
I think Sauna is a Finnish horror movie.
@@n.ami1505 I think you’re right. I thought it was about drawing the border between Norway and Sweden, but that makes no sense.
Omggg the way you said pizza was absolutely adorableee
I tried taking a shot every time you say freaking and now I'm deader than the bear they stuck Christian in.
Oh no 😅
Question: Is the art (the paintings) in the houses something from Sweden or a pure aesthetic invention for the film?
I think it's similar in style to older Nordic tapestries (like from the medieval era) though the specific art is made for the movie
It is made in typical old swedish style, yes.
It's really interesting to get a actual swede perspective, thanks for posting! Also, you kinda look like Brie Larson!? She's a great actress
Thank you for watching!
19:35 that's what all you Swedes say, especially after Midsommer
what does midsommar look like for you?? I was hoping youd talk about it in the video but here I am asking cause im really curious :)
I spend it with family/friends and we eat the typical Midsommar foods. We dress up in summer clothes and make flower crowns. And we stay up late and just talk (cause it’s so bright outside). When I was younger though I used to play games, dress the Maypole and dance around it. :)
@@acceber. thats awesome!! I actually just asked my Swedish friend that lives in göteborg what midsommar is like for him and he said the same thing. well, except for the fact that coronavirus is a thing and there was no midsommar last year. is that changing this year? thanks for replying :)
Ahhh cool! Yeah I didn’t really celebrate Midsommar (like usual) last year and probably not this year either.
@@acceber. damn, this pandemic really sucks man. I also recently educated myself on swedish food and ooomg I would love to try what would be served on midsommar. this shit needs to end.
@@acceber. Now you say summer clothes, please don't say it's all white! Nothing good comes from all white clothes, lmao!

Finally a good movie about Sweden.
@@systerkeno They are named ättestupa, but nobody was dropped from them. They are legends.
🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
lol!
I know a couple of swedish actors. May is in the series Clark(about the origen of the Stockholm syndrome, one of the elders is in the series Kälek och Anarki and the old man that jump off the cliff is in the documentary "The most beautiful boy in the world " it is about him actually.
27:32 freak? is freak the word? i bet freak is the word you're looking for...
I feel this film is a mixture of he’s not into you and the wicker man. Ari Aster said that he was going through a very difficult break up when he was making this film, so a lot of that stress and anxiety went into the film otherwise it would’ve just been a slasher apparently.
25:38 but now we know what she said 👍🏻🙂
translation appreciated
Take a shot every time you say freak... yeah im dead drunk after 10 minutes lol
Hahahaha sorry xD
I was curious on how someone who was actually from Sweden would react to this film. Thanks for your input on this movie’s portrayal of the Midsommar Holiday.
Hey just wanna ask, what is the name of the present May Queen ? And do you plan on becoming one later ?
24:01 Detective Rebecca, on the case
What a film to start your horror journey.
I wonder if you are ready for The Exorcist...

Yeah of course that's now how you guys celebrate midsommar right... I trust you...
