Interesting... I don't really collect error coins, but I've come across some while coin roll hunting: clipped planchet, partial/missing/peeling lamination, die chips/cracks/cuds, strike-through/grease, a few minor off-center strikes. Never really got into ancient/medieval coins - I just don't know anything about them. And gold.. there are just too many other coins I'd rather get.

Honestly as far as error and ancient coins go, I just have what I’ve found. I haven’t gone off to collect them. Hence the randomness. On the gold I completely understand. It’s very expensive for small additions to the collection. Most of it I got back when eBay did those really good sales that allowed me to get it from Apmex below spot. And that was when spot was like $1200/oz.

@@CoinMetallurgist Yeah, gold used to be a lot cheaper. Wish I had more disposable income back when I had just gotten out of school, when gold was around $300/oz... Alas, gold prices have outpaced my income growth by almost double, so it's even less affordable now than it was back then.

Small nitpick, but one that I see a lot of people make: double dies and die cracks aren’t errors. Those are classified as varieties. Basically, an error happens during the minting process. A variety is already in the die.
As for that Iranian coin, it’s called ghosting. From an article on it: “This effect is caused by the fact that the volume of metal displaced by the portrait is greater than that of the reverse design.”

Fehler bedeutet Seltenheit und Seltenheit bedeutet wertvoll😊

Sometimes a lot more than others. Low supply and high demand helps value.
