That's awesome Jerome!! Yeah, with vibrato once you do it correctly with your tongue, it's pretty easy. Doing it with your air, jaw, chin, etc. is really tough! Glad you figured it out.
@@ScottPaddock I have to admit, no one taught me and I used to do it by shaking the instrument. I still can't it to be as smooth by saying doyoyoyoy. lol Should I stick to what I've been doing, or learn to move my tongue?

I'm at work right now and I can't wait to go home and try this! I've been taught to do the vibrato through changing the airflow and I haven't tried to do this with my tongue.

Great way to address the matter(as you usually do)!! Vibrato is something I'm missing to make more expressive my sound, specifically in low tempo songs. I like how you address even the most common issues when trying the technique; I'll keep on practicing until I sound like a dying mosquito no more! You have a great channel, Scott!

I've always been taught that it was all in the jaw and i've had so much trouble with trying to maintain my embouchure and do vibrato. I'll try this out to see if it helps. Thank you for the great video!

Scott, I've been playing the sax for three years now and it has been a longer and harder journey for me getting familiar with my instrument despite my love for playing and the enjoyment I get when I do. I've watched and listened to your videos and I have felt compelled to like every one (so far because) your explain and illustrate very, very well!

Great lesson man! Didn't realize that vibrato was mostly using the tongue. You are immensely helping self taught players like us. By the way, do you also happen to have a lesson on tonguing cleanly on the sax? Especially in starting notes. Mine sounds like i'm spitting, how do you start a note cleanly?
Thanks! I haven't done one on tonguing yet. That is by far one of the hardest things to teach, because you can see a visual. I'll put it on the list though!

Very interesting, Scott! I’m a retired H.S. band director and professional saxophonist, classically and jazz trained in the 60’s and 70’s. All the legendary classical pro’s, including Hemke, Teal, Sinta and Rousseau (and all the instructors I’ve ever encountered) advocated for “jaw” vibrato. And, as far as I have seen, all the current UA-cam sax instructors (Jay, Nigel, Jamie, Dr. Wally, etc), except for you, follow that same trend. Though I admit that you produce a very fine vibrato using the “tongue” technique, I’m just wondering - if it works so well, why does it appear that you are the only one teaching it? Have multiple generations of sax players been taught wrong?
I was taught this technique by Chris Vadala in my 20s and have used it ever since. In this video, I should have been a little less "this is the right way and that is the wrong way" but I was early on in making UA-cam videos at the point I made this video. I should have emphasized that there is more than one way to do vibrato and this is the way I teach it.
From my perspective, chewing on the reed is not the best and most efficient way to create a great-sounding vibrato. Using your tongue to control the airflow gives you a lot more control. Try whistling and adding vibrato to it with your tongue and then with your jaw and it becomes very apparent which way works better. The way I do vibrato my airspeed never slows down or speeds up. The airstream remains constant. However, If the jaw vibrato is working for you and feels better - stick with it!
Also, I have never had to use a mouthpiece patch, because I'm not constantly changing the bite pressure on the mp.
Thanks, Scott, for taking the time on such a thorough and speedy response to my inquiry. I’ve followed the principles of the finest players and teachers during my whole 65-year saxophone career, never wavering(lol) from the “jaw” vibrato technique simply because it worked. But options are good things and I would encourage all serious learners to experiment with both techniques, and if the tongue approach is easier and more effective, then go for it. BTW, in my case, age has brought on some degree of jaw stiffness (possibly TMJ?) and it might be a good time to try a different approach. We’ll see what happens!

WOW. This is Amazing way of Demo. I was struggling for quite a long time. Was through the tutorial Quarter note, Eighth note, Triplets & Sixteenth note , practising each at 60, 70,80 & 90 BPM of the metronome. But your method is so clear & extremely effective. All the times I was simply operating my Jaw & lips. But with your method am getting it by throat movement along with a little movement of Jaws & Lips. Love you, Scott.

Wow! I wish I had come to this video sooner! I have applied the "doyoyoy" voicing to my sound and not only is my vibrato like 75% better but it seems like I had something wrong with my embochure that focusing on the doyoyoy has fixed

Hey Mikael, it's ok if your lip moves a little, but most of the movement should be in your tongue. Your tongue gives you way more control, and the sound is more natural.

Mikael Wonohito If you want that Glenn Miller sax section vibrato. I believe you use the very small lip movements very fast.

I noticed that you are the only teacher on You Tube that advices tongue vibrato! All the others advice jaw vibrato. how do you look at that?
I think the rest of them must have very tired jaws 😂😅🤣 Seriously though, I would never advise anybody to chew on their mouthpiece, which is essentially what jaw vibrato is. It causes the wavy sound by opening and closing the reed. As opposed to using your tongue where you will have a lot more control over the air flow.
@@ScottPaddock Oke. I am afraid that I learned the vibrato years ago by myself, no teacher involved. So I tried the tongue vibrato, just to check it out. It looks like it doesn't work for me. I will try again, but for the moment I prefer the way I used to make the vibrato. Greetings from Holland.

Hi Scott! Another great video, just stuck on a couple of things. First, how do I make my vibrato sound more even and less lurching? Should I be practicing with a metronome? Second, I've recently adopted a new embouchre as described in 'BIG FAT SAXOPHONE TONE TUTORIAL'. While in general this has improved my sound, I find it hard to keep this up while practicing vibrato without it squeaking constantly. Any tips to help rectify this?
If it sounds choppy (lurching) you might be moving your tongue down too far. It shouldn't be a big dip, just a little wave. I never have students practice vibrato with a metronome, it shouldn't be in time, it should be floating above. Embouchure - you might have your lip rolled out a little too much that can definitely cause squeaks.

Some other people told me to do a vibrato with my jaw rather than with my tongue. Personally, I naturally tend to do it with my jaw, but you're telling me to do it with my tongue. I'm not sure which way is better.
my way is better :-) Try whistling and adding vibrato to it, you'll notice that it is near impossible to do with your jaw but very easy to do with your tongue. It's the same concept on your instrument.
