Jarrod, are you planning to review the MSI stealth 16 studio ? Wanna decide b/w the MSI stealth 16 studio & the Lenovo slim 7i. Been reading that the MSI stealth 16 has great battery life.
@@bionicle2122 I pronounce it the way it's done in Australia. Sorry, I already make far too many concessions in the way I pronounce stuff for a primarily US focussed audience, but this is where I draw the line :)
I’ve been using this laptop with the same configuration for the last 4 weeks and I absolutely love it! What impressed me was how silent the fans were even at light 1080p gaming. They do get loud at higher resolutions and more demanding titles but the fact that such a thin and light laptop can properly keep up is very impressive. Highly recommend it
@@bobbyalice5530 It gets a little warm sometimes when I have it in balanced mode and doing productivity tasks, but the fans are also completely silent. You can always adjust the fan curves to change that. And I never noticed it getting very hot while gaming. But the majority of the time it's completely cool. The battery is also a solid 5-6 hours on high resolution and decently high brightness. I imaging it could easily go up to 7 or 8 if you needed it
@@manugo-dev I haven't noticed it at all. While gaming it does get hot, but I never notice a drop in performance between starting a game and playing for even a few hours. The fans can get quite loud as a downside, but it seems to have no real thermal issues
I have seen some hinge issues with legion 7 laptops. The hinge is glued into the aluminium body and it creates some issues in the future. I have bought a slim 7i recently and am a bit worried now.
My own slim 7i specced like yours arrived yesterday and it’s a gorgeous machine. The whole package just feels robust and well made; not to mention it’s thinner and lighter, yet more powerful than my older Legion Y540. It’s like two different companies made this and the Y540. If you’re looking to upgrade yourself from a lower priced laptop or an older model, this is well worth the money. I’m using this for design school and compared to most students Dell workstations and think pads, this machine might as well be a windows MacBook Air.
Sounds great! Ordered mine on July 5th, they keep pushing around the shipment date, and every time I reach out they keep telling me a new date so hopefully it will ship out today as they promised, hah. The delay is mostly because I customized it, they said they had to ship it from over seas. Got it all maxed out with the 3200x2000 display for creativity/workflow.
@@coc_champs so far so good! It’s lasting me long enough to use if for a multiple hour long lecture with plenty of battery to spare. Also used it for Adobe creative work for a couple hours on battery and never felt worried I was gonna run out.
@@collinsmakamu4544 this new aluminum case feels incredibly nice. I think it’s worth the upgrade for that alone. The screen is also gorgeous, bright, and colorful with very minor bezels.
The Windows 11 Battery Saver Mode can significantly increase battery life, in my tested cases 2-4 times, turning 1.5 hours to 4-5 hours. It can be enabled at 100%, so it will always be enabled when unplug the charger. I enabled it and it allows me to go to meetings without the charger, this is really a game charger for me, so it will be very helpful if the battery life is measured with power saver enabled.
How do you have no idea lol. They are a chinese company while others such as Dell, HP are american, they have to have profits in US economy, while lenovo despite making less profit/product compared to these brands is still significant overpay for them.
Looks really promising for someone who wants portability as well as good performance. Waiting for the 7840HS version of this laptop for better battery life.
@@toblobs I'll consider it a win if the runtime increases by 1-2 hours. Performance will virtually be the same, going by other zen 4 pcs. Cherry on top is that it'll be a bit cheaper, and amd models usually go on sale more often too. Overall a no brainer
After doing extensive research for the last couple weeks. Pulled the trigger on this laptop today. They had it on display at Best buy. Got to play around on it for a bit in store dispite it being out of stock in my area. The build quality is impressive and screen is probably the best of any laptop they had in store besides the macbooks. Im excited to get this thing next week.
Zero complaints exactly what I wanted. Like it better than my old razer. Build quality is amazing, battery life is good for a slim gamming laptop. Very happy I went with machine.@@12Rosen
I was checking the lenovo Australia website everyday since April to see if this one was finally avialable, along with the HP site for the omen trascend. I was so excited that it kept the premium features that the Legion 7pro got rid of. Then due to work circumstances I eventually had to built myself a desktop instead. But still happy to watch your review.
I have this laptop and I can say for sure, this is one of the best laptop I have ever own. The only thing I don't like is the trackpad. It feels finicky at times but I use a external mouse so I hardly notice it.
i haven't really had problems with the trackpad on my end, for me the keyboard feels a bit weird but i am still extremely happy with this device and it's minor enough for me not to care too much at all
FINALLY!!! BEEN WAITING FOR THIS VIDEO FOR 2 MONTHS!! I already bought the laptop as this is the only legion this year with full Aluminium chassis, and 4070 performing like a 3070ti generating much less heat I believe it's a match made in heaven for such a thin laptop. I'm enjoying gaming on my unit daily so far, thermals all within good range, added extra 1tb m2 SSD, and specced it up to total of 48gb ram. I also bought the proprietary 140w Legion USB C charger thanks to your advice in the previous year model video, sad part it doesn't charge my Pixel 7 Pro. I already love this laptop to bits! However I'm still gonna go back to watching your analysis and breakdown of this laptop Jarrod, see if I can learn anything new, and you do it better than anyone else on UA-cam! Keep it up, always supporting you! 😃💪🏻
Broh I am looking for laptop too for so long I am waiting for his video in which categorise the besf laptop with different grades by d way from where you bought your Legion 7i
Oh man! I went ahead with a Legion 5i Pro with same specs (i9, 32gb, 4070) thinking it would game better than this Slim 7i based on thermals. Doh! Who would have thought the slimmer machine would win. Great review, thank you.
I bought the exact same spec laptop (i913900, 4070, 1TB and 32GB) as in this video about 1 month ago (bought it after watching this video in the first place), and i must say that was the best money i ever paid and i want to say thank you for the recommendation Jarrod! I am still extremely surprised at how good this laptop is put together material wise and build quality, but most importantly how crisp and smooth that 3.2K display is. My usage for it is mainly modelling and rendering software aswell as adobe bundle (CAD, revit, lumion, sketchup, photoshop, illustrator etc.) and I recently downloaded BF5 and it is also running great, getting stable 60 FPS on 3.2K resolution. To those interested, I did end up getting a pretty good deal on it, around €2000 with the 3 year premium care plan after discount (without discount around €2700 [Germany]).
How is it going for you? Not so tech savvy with all these specs myself, but it seems your uses of this laptop is very similar to myself, I mess about with Blender, and will be using it for QGIS mostly too. I wa dgoing to go for the AMD model with the supposed better battery life and it was sizeable difference in pricing (around €400 cheaper), but it sold out this morning and the 7i is the only model left. Right now the deal I got is €2160 discounted from €2760, would you recommend ?
@@Kev_Cos Well seems like we really do have similar usage for the laptop and like I mentioned, I am extremely happy with it so far, and I believe if I take good care of it, it should last me at least 5 good years; the build quality is that good. Btw, I also use QGIS and it really does the job very well. Interesting that you mention the AMD version, because I also noticed the price difference at first, which actually made me choose the AMD, but then the november sales came about and the difference went down from €400 like you said to about €100, so my decision was made quickly there and I went for the intel one (pure luck really). I believe if I were in your situation now I would wait for the AMD to be in stock again (if it is not too long of a wait) because I sincerly think there is not much difference between the two other than the brand, but maybe Jarrod could give you a second opinion. Good luck! :)
more gaming laptops with an SD card would be cool. Especially with the amount of “professional subtlety” style of gaming laptops we are getting nowadays.
That''s terrible calibration.......460 nits max but only 57 nits at 50% brightness.......it should be 230 nits at 50% brightness.........Literally the worst brightness calibration I've ever seen. smh
@@theblitz1687 Your eyes need help. I've checked all my devices. They aren't perfectly linear.....but they aren't terrible either......187 nits out of 460.....at 80% is stupid
Hey Jarrod, thanks for this review! I've been waiting for this for a long time :). I also had a small question, when do you think the AMD version of the laptop will come out?. Lenovo's announcement said May 2023 but its almost been 2 months now and I really wanted the amd version for college.
To add clarify to the opening of the laptop at 4:26 - to pull off the bottom panel, simply pull up on the little narrow slots at the back of the laptop and it comes off really easy, no need to pry the cover off Great video, it's the reason I bought the Slim 7i. I moved over from the Legion Pro 7, and I like the Slim better due to 1) fingerprint scanner, 2) lighter weight, 3) smaller power brick while keeping all the same functionality of the Pro.... oh and no stupid cosair iCue
I am hyped for framework 16” to come 😁 It will solve the problems of every gaming laptop which is obselence. It would be funny if framework 16” with discrete gpus could compete with other gaming laptops
Framework needs a massive ad campaign to be succesul. Even then, upgradable laptop is a headache for a typical user (remember, enthusiasts are a tiny minority)
@@kiyoponnn You can replace the board to upgrade the CPU. The upgrade of GPU is actually easier then on a desktop. You just snap on a GPU bay similar to a battery in old laptops.
19:05 I can confirm a lot of 2023 gaming laptops don't have working speakers in Linux. I have a Blade 14 2023, and the same thing is happening in both Ubuntu & EndeavourOS (an Arch-based distro with an Xfce live environment), however, this may be due to Realtek supplying the speaker modules for most laptops in 2023 and for Realtek being 💩 in Linux.
@@JarrodsTech Yeah, I am trying to get the 2023 Razer Blade 14's keyboard working in Linux with OpenRazer's developers, but right now, that speaker issue means I would need to use external headphones (the 3.5 mm jack does work) to get audio.
I wanna buy this exclusivily for Linux. Most probably PopOS or Ubuntu or Kali. Is there any way to sort out the sound/speaker issue.? Or is it already taken care by Lenovo/Realtek.?
@sh3jerry I'm not sure if the newer kernels have upstream a fix for the speakers on this laptop. There is a way to do it manually. But you need the laptop, as it is pretty difficult and basically requires writing a kernel module if it isn't supported yet.
I have been running this same unit with i9 4070 and i upgraded to 32gb ram for 6 months. I actually sold my m1 max macbook 16 because I found me using this more without compromise. I have absolutely no issues and only one wish list item in that the SD card be faster UHS II rather than lame UHS I speed. Easily solved with a SD dongle reader for usbC gets me 250-280mbs transfer of footage from gopro. However with iphone 14 pro having ability to record right to external ssd I may switch over to iphone for my video recording, just unplug ssd drive from iphone right into laptop and then I get SSD speeds for transfer of footage or just edit right on the external ssd
@@HDanyRodriguez Hate to be a disappointment, but Lenovo failed to deliver my laptop and took it back and their only response was shrug, here's your money back. So I took my money back and bought from another brand (HP).
Has LENOVO added the Adaptive Refresh Rate to the 7i &5i Pro models yet like they did with this one? BTW good video Bro keep up the content very informative
I’m kinda torn. The Legion 7i Slim is on sale now for $1799 at Best Buy, it comes with a RTX 4070 AND 13 gen core i9, but I also have my eyes on the Razer Blade 15 OLED which is now on sale for $2199 but it has a GTX 3070 and 12th gen core i9 I’m debating if paying $400 more to get that OLED display is worth with the slight step down in performance. Decisions decisions. 🤔🤔
It's a 3070Ti so the performance will actually be the same or so. You just don't get DLSS 3.0. It's a smaller screen at 15.6" vs 16". I love me some Razer as well and OLEDs. Is the OLED screen glossy or matte? Either way having an OLED would be nice. If you're planning to watch lots of movies I think it's worth it. I believe the Razer has 2 ram slots vs 1 on the 7i slim
I realize that it wasn't the best at the time, but I ended up buying the 2021 model 2 years ago with the 100w 3060 and I like it mainly cuz I don't look like a weirdo when I use it at school and work and it's still fine for games I play for high 1080p/medium 1440p. Glad to see improvements being made on the newer models.
I bought one of these a month ago on sale. Great machine. Mine doesn't have the problem with overheating VRAM, I wonder if that's a build issue. I wonder how much the screen size affects battery life and if that's what's making the difference between the two versions.
I have the first gen slim 7i. Got an out of box deal at best buy for $700. Brand new condition. Amazing laptop the only issues I have are fan noise and heat. Easy fix with headset
Hello! Since the last few weeks, I have been researching a lot to decide between Lenovo Legion Slim 7i 13900H+4070, Legion Pro 5 13700HX+4070 and Legion Pro 5 7745HX+4070. My actual purpose of buying is music production, live music performance and gaming as well as CGI. Music does need a higher single core performance and therefore thinking about buying the Slim one. But I'm afraid that because of it being slim, will it compete well against the other two laptops? Can anyone please help come to a conclusion? Thank you so much!
18:41 This OS makes me want to see a Lenovo motherboard. WHY CAN’T COMPANIES MAKE A NICE UI LIKE THIS? If this was thicker and had a 4080, it would work well as a Legion Pro 7i.
Would you recommend this over the Legion 5i Pro Gen 8 with same specs? That’s the price range I’m looking for and from my research I really wanna go with Lenovo over their competitors
I picked up Gigabyte Aero 16 2022 model at half the price of this Legion Slim 7 and what makes my Aero 16 lacks is 165Hz Screen, Built in I/O Ports for USB Type As, Display ports, and RGB Lighting, However Where Aero 16 outshines is, A 100% True Color Accurate 4K UHD + 3840 x 2400 500Nits Amoled Screen ( Something which is 100% in sight while using), A stainless Aluminum CNC built Chasis which never catches finger prints or stains even if you try, Much Sturdier and wobble-less hinge. I have been a Lenovo Legion 5 Pro user for 2 years alongside a Legion 7 2021 model which I kept for 6 months appx. After having this Aero 16, my honest thoughts, "I'm never going back to Legions for this Oled screen and crystal sharp and accurate colors alone!"
Hi Jarrod. Quick question! I have the exact laptop. I recently bought the samsung 990 Pro. Do I need to put buy thermal pads with heat sink for it? Is it mandatory? Thanks!
Loved this review, it seems the lenovo legion slim 7i is a very good contender for one of the best laptops of the year. I would love to know how much the Lenovo Slim 5i is different than this since its like cheaper than some mid-range gaming laptops.
could you possibly include gameplay in your future reviews? i know, you cover it basically with the benchmark but as a consumer, I just would like to see a bit of gameplay. idk, just a thought.
Great extensive review, i have been looking for a good gaming/professional laptop for a while and this ticks all the boxes. Any idea when this will become available in the EU? (Netherlands)
Both are nice, I'd have to think more about it and I'm just heading to bed ATM lol. I liked the screen on M16 more I think, and you get more ram upgrades this gen
@@JarrodsTech Lenovo seems to be cheaper than Asus here in Europe, which is a big plus. I'm not sure which brand has better durability and longevity though.
I have bought the Legion Slim 7i 4070 and used it for a week now. So far I'm in love with it! It's slim and I love the designe! It also has the same performance as other thick ones (as shown in this video). I ordered it from Lenovo directly and they offer you pretty nice customization and at the time a 40% discount. You can even choos to not have Windows on it, wich I didn't need because I already have a license from my old Notebook. I paid abaout € 2050 for a i9 and a 4070, 16gb RAM (I added an extra RAM stick myself for another €50) with an amazing screen and build quality. For the european market I couldn't find anything better for this price.
Is it possible to lower the in-game resolution and still achieve the same performance, or will it make the game look blurry on a 3.2K panel and result in a less sharp gaming experience?
Looks stunning even on lower resolutions. I have the 3.2k panel version and I mostly use the native resolution on high/ultra in games with no problems. At 2560x1600, it is buttery smooth, crisp and sharp. Works fantastic on Balanced mode and squeezes everything out of the game in Performance mode. No need to go back to 1080p though I’m sure it looks great on that resolution as well.
@@MrTuna8000 Sorry for the late response but I have both the variants; 4060 (i7) and 4070 (i9). Both work well with 4070 working better with an external display on high resolutions. The difference exists but visible only on niche use cases. For day-to-day usage, either variant would work well. 👍
@@CopperstonedThanx for the reply! Had a hard time deciding at that time but picked the 4060 in the end😅 Can't justify to pay SGD$500 more for the additional 10fps. So far pretty happy with the performance! Btw how's the battery life of yours?
@@MrTuna8000 Yeah, understandable decision. The past few years have been tough for consumers of GPUs and laptops! The 4060 variant gets around six to eight hours of usage on Balanced mode, mostly has Chrome, Outlook, light streaming and work-related apps on (Zoom, Slack etc). Quiet mode gives slightly more usage time though not by much and never really calculated the difference between the two modes on battery to be honest. It’s a similar situation with the 4070 variant as well. On Balance power mode, gives around seven hours, quiet mode can stretch it up to ten. I’ve removed most bloatware and disabled a lot of unnecessary background services; kept only the relevant Lenovo software such as Vantage and so on. Restricted the charging to 80% since day one so I’ve not tried to see what happens on full battery. Lol! On stock condition, the device lasts barely five hours so try to delete apps you won’t use as it definitely affected my device’s performance. Gaming on battery will depend on the game. In my case, with both 4060 and 4070, Balance mode, God of War PC on battery lasts about 90 minutes on Ultra settings, and works really well without any stutters whatsoever (60 to 80 fps depending on area) so quite good I suppose. Hogwarts Legacy lasts about 40 to 60 minutes on battery, lol but max settings obviously. I love both the variants. The person who is using the 4060 variant is satisfied while I’m more than happy with the 4070 version. Hopefully, you’re enjoying the device just as much as me!
I'm kinda interested in the AMD version of this. I'd definitely wait for it to be on sale though, if it was around $1500, it'd be a good upgrade from my G15.
48+16 = 64 Gig ? It would be interesting to see if a 48GB SODIMM would work in the machine for a total of 64 Gb. Only issue would be that it may run 'worse'? Not sure...Comments @JarrodsTech?
Thank you for detailed reviews where I can check all details I really need! I'm going to buy in next few month a new working notebook, and I would like to have at the same time: - keyboard with pgup/ pgdown / home / end dedicated keys I need to work as a software engineer - 16'' matte screen, - enough good portability for 16'' form factor, - good performance, - enough good battery life. Only competitors I consider are: Lenovo Slim 7(i) and MSI Stealth 16. (I would like if you suggest some another candidate!) They both look very similar accordingly reviews I have seen (notebookcheck has reviewed both for example), the biggest differences are: - battery life which is severely better for Stealth 16, - 2 free memory slots available for Stealth 16 (1 soldered in Legion Slim 7), and that's why I'm leaning towards Stealth 16, but I am not sure about MSI build quality, probably Lenovo has better quality in Legion series. Now I would like to see your review for Stealth 16, it could help me to make final decision.
The MSI Stealth 16 is extremely hot (around 60°C) according to the same notebookcheck review... aside from being better built (and Notebookcheck's Legion Slim 7i battery levels being extremely and idle power draw being extremely suspicious of running on dgpu mode), I'd pick the legion hands down.
Bought the AMD version of this laptop around this time last year. 16APH8. Ryzen 7840HS 16GB(Soldered) +16GB added in, 4060M. Thing has been phenomenal. Plenty powerful when needed, and sips power when you don't. The build itself is gorgeous as well, all metal, very nice lines, professional looking, but hiding some real power. Would buy another, most definitely.
Should I get this or the Legion 7i Pro 4080? How much "bulkier" is the Pro with a 4080, and is the bulk worth the performance boost? I just want to game at 1080p with around 120-144fps minimum if possible. I usually run low graphics settings for optimal performance. I want to play Rust, Dark and Dark, maybe New World. I wouldn't really carry the laptop in a backpack too much, I just want portability because I travel a lot. My concern is going for the Pro 4080 and not taking advantage of the additional power, making the bulk and additional cost pointless. Thanks.
I have this laptop and it is great. No real complaints other than the battery life. I am trying to optimize settings to fix. Found it can drop up to 5 percent shut down overnight. I have played around with some settings so we’ll see how it does now. One of those being USB ports always on (now it’s off). Any suggestions for those who have one? I have a lot of programs running on it and have most power efficient modes on. I seemed to be able to get under 5 hours of usage with browsing the web. Is that normal? I heard up to 7 hours in other reviews…
Hi, Thank you for such detailed and professional review. I have purchased this laptop replacing my old pc this Black Friday and waiting or its arrival. But I have heard rumors saying that the Lenovo software, which directs different modes would accelerate battery drain. Do you have had any chance testing it out? Also, by working with Nvidia driver and Windows power mode setting, can the users also achieve same effect of these apps?
Did you have to enable anything to see this more advanced BIOS? Sitting in front of my i7/4060 version and I do not have as many settings in BIOS as shown in the video
I wonder how does this compare to the Legion 7i 2022 version, is this better or should I just get the Legion 7i 2022 3080ti version one? since the Pro 2023 is way too expensive and the price for 2022 had just decreased considerably in my region.
Before I saw this video, I just ordered this laptop with the 4060 /i7 version as the slightly lower performance might help with thermals, noise, and battery life and it was 500-600 cheaper. And game benchmarks look promising, too, for that version. What I really like is how good many games seem to run on silent mode. I can't wait to get it next week :) Thanks for the review -I heard about the BIOS options for the first time, here. I never tweaked those settings in my life but now I'm curious what you can do with them. I'm even more hyped now :)
@@caramel7050 So, I really like it. I've been testing it on Elden Ring so far. I can easily play it on the native 1600p on high settings at 55-60 fps for the most part. Some areas dipped lower then that but it's been pretty smooth. It even works 55-60 fps on quiet mode but it can get a little hotter then (gpu temperature of 75 degrees celsius). So you can absolutely try for each game which balance of quiet mode or "balanced" mode works for you. Fans on balanced mode can be heard through headphones if you have a very low volume on. There's also a fan software ("lenovo legion toolkit") that apparently lets you set a custom mode with greater fan control. The chassis is really solid, all metal, and feels great, including hinges and screen. I also really like the screen itself.
@@zhdyak7134 Sure! I really like it overall. I'm just a normal user with average knowledge of computers and that I never have had such a powerful machine before but these are my impressions: Positive: I love the build quality and screen a lot. Everything is sturdy, esp. the hinges. I have the 2560x1440 screen, it is quite bright and I really enjoy viewing photos on it. Other good things are the MUX-switch and the three difference performance modi (silent, normal, performance). Fans have created an unofficial program that lets you add a fourth and fine-tune overall control over fans and overclocking etc (Lenovo Legion Toolkit). Silent Mode gives you good performance for many games if they are not the most extreme demanding. Most ports are at the back of the chassis, which I love. Negative: Was to be expected for this build and metal chassis but it can run rather hot esp on. Noticeable for me is overall heat emission and the upper left corner of the chassis (next to the Esc button). During the summer it was quite noticeable in a small, already warm room. Haven't tried battery life yet, seems to be on the short side (I have the intel i7 CPU version). Charger is rather heavy and big and runs very hot during gaming so I try not to put it on rugs, for example. Also, fan noise on performance mode can be rather loud-ish and noticeable even through speakers. Fortunately, you can play many games on Silent Mode (like Elden RIng without raytracing or Baldur's Gate 3) though Silent Mode increases the temperature a bit. Maybe I'll try to find a custom mode that reduces heat a bit but is similar to Silent Mode. The most demanding game I own right now is the pc port of Returnal. Mostly High settings with Medium-High raytracing is possible with DLSS with some tweaking. Returnal offers a benchmark tool and I got around 50-60 fps for these settings but the worst dips of the benchmark were way below 30 fps. Though I think the pc port of Returnal also produces some stutters sometimes not sure if that is related. I do sometimes get stutters on those settings. Though I also like to play on Silent Mode with slightly toned down settings. Returnal being one of the most demanding games right now if I am not mistaken, so it appears that gaming with raytracing on this laptop can be possible but only with DLSS and some tweaking around (High settings with perhaps an odd medium thrown in). I guess the details would depend heavily on a game's optimization etc. Maybe I'm gonna try Cyberpunk 2077 later this year. Other than that, I have had some issues with screen flickering in the last two weeks, it flared up two times and then everything worked fine again. Might turn to fan or later official support if it keeps happening, but it's good now.
Just got the laptop yesterday and am pretty satisfied with it right now. My only issue is battery life being around 4 hours compared to his 7 hours. The battery temperature is also always at 35 degrees Celsius even when no apps are running, so I'm not sure if thats a defect with my own product or if it's normal.
Always the best, but i think maybe you should try the new cooling pad, i see the IETS GT500 can reduce 15-20*C. It will be a huge boost on performance, i guest
Hey Jarrod, awesome video. I just got my unit and I think we have the same display. Mine is a 3.2K (3200x2000) IPS with 100% DCI-P3 at 165Hz. I want to do photo edits in Lightroom and view them as slide shows on TVs, what colour profile should I choose under X-Rite Color Assistant? Currently the laptop is preloaded with Display P3 along with some other ones, but I don't see DCI-P3 profile. There's also Default, Adobe RGB, sRGB. Thanks in advance!
I have watched a few other reviews and they said it wasn't possible to fit a double-sided drive in the spare NVME bay. My question is if this only applies to the sabrent Double sided 8TB drives or can I only use drives from WD?
Hi Jarrods 🙂, i have a question for you that can save my day. I search for your reviews but i don't find a review about the Asus TUF f15 2023 with i7-12700H and RTX 4060, so i need an advise from you. Is better the Aorus 17X (2022) with i7-12700H and rtx 3070 Ti or the Asus TUF f15(2023) with i7-12700H and RTX 4060. They both have 16GB RAM and my doubt are not only about the performance in gaming, but also the temperature that they reach, their cooling system and the materials (because this will be my pc for a lot of years😅). I ask this because i buy right now the ASUS but the keyboard reach very high temperature, and seeing the Aorus at the same price i was wondering if it was worth returning the ASUS to get the AORUS at only 60$ more.
Hey Jarrod. Does gaming laptop have the same Windows latency issues as reported by Tech Yes City? I wonder if it's an issue with PC only or if laptops have had similar issues too.
Hey Jarrod, can you link the correct Thunderbolt 4 charging cable with 140W charge 20 V / 7A? You mentioned one on Lenovo but it's unclear which one to use.
You will also need a charger capable of 20 V / 7A, the only one that lenovo makes requires a 240V input so if you live in North America you would be limited to 100w charging max.
Hello Jarrod, I want to say that I enjoy watching your reviews, the amount of information that you provide gave me a lot of insight before buying the new laptop. However, I would suggest if you could do (besides comparing the fps of different games) also to give the same list of the noise level on three main modes (silent, balance and performance) and compare it in chart as you usually do for fps or screen response, battery life etc. I know that you provide this information, but it is hard to compare multiple laptops, this requires to watch multiple videos and to gather data. This in my case is crucial to buy new gaming laptop, I would really sacrifice extra fps if needed just for less noise, or to put in this way, I would spent extra few hundred euro for couple of Db less. I hope you see this comment, I would appreciate it.
Hi Jarrod, i have a question. What's better 2023 legion 5 pro or 2023 legion slim 7? In my homecountry Austria they are nearly the same price right now. Very good Videos from you btw 😁
Were the display hinges well-built? I had to return one of these b/c the single-foot hinge would slightly come up when opening the laptop, as if it wasn't properly glued.
Thanks a lot for this review. I bought this model based on your recommendation. I want to know if I want to install Samsung NVMe 4TB SSD Drive with heat sink, will it fit inside. In the video you used normal one with no heat sink. Please advise 😊
Hey, Jarrod! Im considering this Legion 7 2022 you compared, with 6850m XT 6800H 16GB RAM, is it worth it for 1500 usd (tax included) over Asus G15 (1100$ in your video) and Dell variant (1200$) you showed in your recent Asus video? There is an option to overpay for 6900hx 32GB RAM, for 1700$, but i dont think its worth it since its same CPU just unlocked. Your opinion would help out a lot.
Jarrod i am in a quandrum, what resolution screen should i get? The 3.2 100% dci-p3 165hz or the 2k sRGB 240hz. Which one is best for gaming? Can i still game reasonably well with the 3.2k screen with AAA games? Would dlss help the 3.2k screen?

yea it's a bit annoying, also the build on this is better than the legion "pro" 7 with less chassis flex. Compared to my current extreme gen 2, the Legion "pro" 7 construction is piss poor. It's an odd trade off when you would consider material cost can be easily covered.
It seems to be pretty common. The 2022 version didn't have it either, and neither do most of the smaller laptops we've reviewed. I imagine they are too tall to fit.
same, the i9 13900H makes almost no difference because it thermal throttled during testing, so the i7 is the perfect option, also rtx 4070 is only 15% fastẻ than 4060 while cost 300$ more, so 4060 is a great value GPU

Highly recommend it
Does it get hot? And how is the battery on average moderate use
Please tell us about the thermal throttling did you have it ever with this laptop?
How is the battery?
Sounds great! Ordered mine on July 5th, they keep pushing around the shipment date, and every time I reach out they keep telling me a new date so hopefully it will ship out today as they promised, hah. The delay is mostly because I customized it, they said they had to ship it from over seas. Got it all maxed out with the 3200x2000 display for creativity/workflow.
I still have the y540 good laptop but the build quality is starting to give in.I can see a crack near the right hinge.
I have no idea how Lenovo keeps doing this, but so far they still deserve their title as the biggest laptop maker in the world

Great review, thank you.
How do you find yours so far?
Good luck! :)

I’m kinda torn. The Legion 7i Slim is on sale now for $1799 at Best Buy, it comes with a RTX 4070 AND 13 gen core i9, but I also have my eyes on the Razer Blade 15 OLED which is now on sale for $2199 but it has a GTX 3070 and 12th gen core i9
I’m debating if paying $400 more to get that OLED display is worth with the slight step down in performance.
Please check the DPC latency thoroughly when you get the Gen 9. Just returned a Slim 5 Gen 9 because it was peaking at 8000.

I bought one of these a month ago on sale. Great machine. Mine doesn't have the problem with overheating VRAM, I wonder if that's a build issue. I wonder how much the screen size affects battery life and if that's what's making the difference between the two versions.

From what I've gathered from reviews, these legions have very high DPC latency. which makes them unsuitable for music production

Whats the downside of enabling Over Drive in the software forever? Will it cause any future issues? I only play games at 120-140 fps.
it'll drain the battery faster than when it's disabled
Is it possible to lower the in-game resolution and still achieve the same performance, or will it make the game look blurry on a 3.2K panel and result in a less sharp gaming experience?
Looks stunning even on lower resolutions. I have the 3.2k panel version and I mostly use the native resolution on high/ultra in games with no problems. At 2560x1600, it is buttery smooth, crisp and sharp. Works fantastic on Balanced mode and squeezes everything out of the game in Performance mode. No need to go back to 1080p though I’m sure it looks great on that resolution as well.

- keyboard with pgup/ pgdown / home / end dedicated keys I need to work as a software engineer
- 16'' matte screen,
- enough good portability for 16'' form factor,
- good performance,
- enough good battery life.
Only competitors I consider are: Lenovo Slim 7(i) and MSI Stealth 16.
(I would like if you suggest some another candidate!)
They both look very similar accordingly reviews I have seen (notebookcheck has reviewed both for example), the biggest differences are:
- battery life which is severely better for Stealth 16,
- 2 free memory slots available for Stealth 16 (1 soldered in Legion Slim 7),
and that's why I'm leaning towards Stealth 16, but I am not sure about MSI build quality, probably Lenovo has better quality in Legion series.
Would buy another, most definitely.
is it faster than the intel version?
@@NabilSeyad I doubt it, the Intel is an i9. Look it up.
@@J.Wick. ohh I thought you were talking about the i7 chip
Thanks.
Would you prefer this or the LOQ 15/16, I've been thinking about buying one but I dont know which
Hey Jarrod , why no one is making any review video on Acer predator helios 16/18 (not the 'neo' one) ? 😢😔
Yea...wondering the same
NotebookCheck did, I believe

I have this laptop and it is great. No real complaints other than the battery life. I am trying to optimize settings to fix. Found it can drop up to 5 percent shut down overnight. I have played around with some settings so we’ll see how it does now. One of those being USB ports always on (now it’s off). Any suggestions for those who have one? I have a lot of programs running on it and have most power efficient modes on. I seemed to be able to get under 5 hours of usage with browsing the web. Is that normal? I heard up to 7 hours in other reviews…
Could I ask about updates for the batter life?
make sure the dedicated gpu isn't on and using power
Really hate how they are doing 16gb soldered in such a premium laptop i would want to see 2 ram slots or 32gb soldered so you can do 64gb
Hey Jarrod can you review the legion slim 5i varient for more budget friendly audiences?
BTW great video 👍
Hi, Thank you for such detailed and professional review. I have purchased this laptop replacing my old pc this Black Friday and waiting or its arrival. But I have heard rumors saying that the Lenovo software, which directs different modes would accelerate battery drain. Do you have had any chance testing it out? Also, by working with Nvidia driver and Windows power mode setting, can the users also achieve same effect of these apps?
Did you have to enable anything to see this more advanced BIOS? Sitting in front of my i7/4060 version and I do not have as many settings in BIOS as shown in the video
Hi Jarrod, what would you choose, Blade 14, G14 or Slim 7? 2023 models
I can't wait to get it next week :)
Thanks for the review -I heard about the BIOS options for the first time, here. I never tweaked those settings in my life but now I'm curious what you can do with them. I'm even more hyped now :)
i was looking to get this config too since prices are so high here! can you please update when you start using it to see what you think of it?
@@caramel7050 Just got it running yesterday after a shipping delay! I'll give you my impressions later today, maybe you're still interested!
Could you please update on how u like it?😊🙏🏻
@@zhdyak7134 Sure! I really like it overall. I'm just a normal user with average knowledge of computers and that I never have had such a powerful machine before but these are my impressions:
Positive:
I love the build quality and screen a lot.
Negative:
Was to be expected for this build and metal chassis but it can run rather hot esp on.
35 degrees Celsius is pretty normal for laptop idling.
Hi Jarrods 🙂,
i have a question for you that can save my day.
Hi jarrod what double sidded ssd did you get to fit? A lot of other reviewers are saying you cant fit them
Hay jarrod. Would you have a look at the new Legion SLIM 5I and compare it to the Legion pro 5i!
Looking to buy a new laptop for 1500 or less, what would you recommend, or what specs should I pay attention to when researching for a new laptop?
I have a list of fan noise for all laptops I've reviewed here: jarrods.tech/laptop-fan-noise/
@@JarrodsTech Thank you Jarrod!!
Hi Jarrod, i have a question. What's better 2023 legion 5 pro or 2023 legion slim 7? In my homecountry Austria they are nearly the same price right now. Very good Videos from you btw 😁
Legion Slim 7 is probably nicer/more portable, Pro 5 might perform a bit better, but it depends on specific specs
Are you in talks with the Framework crew to get your hands on a Framework 16?
Yes. Not sure if it'll happen but they know I am interested.
Were the display hinges well-built? I had to return one of these b/c the single-foot hinge would slightly come up when opening the laptop, as if it wasn't properly glued.
Imagine how amazing the battery life would be with this capacity and an AMD cpu!
about the same, going off last year's AMD results..
Jarod, we need the new g16 on this channel ASAP, anw love you man!
Thanks a lot for this review. I bought this model based on your recommendation. I want to know if I want to install Samsung NVMe 4TB SSD Drive with heat sink, will it fit inside. In the video you used normal one with no heat sink. Please advise 😊
Hey Jarrod, great video as always, please review Asus TUF F15, i9 13900H, RTX 4060, thank you 👏
Hey, Jarrod!
Would dlss help the 3.2k screen?
you can play fine in 1600p with dlss or fsr ... if you need to squish more fps then set to qhd 16:10 and urs good to go.
Any review with the AMD model which seems more appealing ? Also way cheaper than the Intel variant...
How you can compare them with the I7 version with 4016. Are they working much warmer during playing?
thanks for the review! Are you planning a review of the Slim 5i, good specifications and a great price!?
I think Slim 5 wiht R7 7840H will be best options and cheaper, not Intel

I love how even in this generation of Legions, the Slim 7 is still the model that gets a fingerprint sensor, but the 5/7 “Pro” still doesn’t get one
yea it's a bit annoying, also the build on this is better than the legion "pro" 7 with less chassis flex.
Compared to my current extreme gen 2, the Legion "pro" 7 construction is piss poor. It's an odd trade off when you would consider material cost can be easily covered.
So is ditching the Ethernet port now the new standard if you want to go slim. I don't know about you guys but that is a deal breaker for me
It seems to be pretty common. The 2022 version didn't have it either, and neither do most of the smaller laptops we've reviewed. I imagine they are too tall to fit.
Thank you for the video ❤
This is what I wanted to see.
I think i7 and 4060 would be better for this laptop case
same, the i9 13900H makes almost no difference because it thermal throttled during testing, so the i7 is the perfect option, also rtx 4070 is only 15% fastẻ than 4060 while cost 300$ more, so 4060 is a great value GPU
Hey Jarrod out of the Alienware m16 QHD+ 13th i9 16gb 4080 and Gigabyte Aorus FHD i7 16gb 4080 which one do you think is better ?
