Naipaul's views come to my mind. India's Hindu civilization was wounded grievously during the bloody Islamic conquest of India and subsequent rule of 800 years. After the British interlude, the liberal political dispensation post 1947 was wrapped up and enchanted with the political ideologies of the West- Liberalism, secularism(in its western formulation), socialism, etc. as if these were the new gods which replaced the old.
These ideologies were the products of the specific histories of those countries. But the Western educated elites in India blindly imported and imitated them as if they represented the inexorable march towards social and intellectual progress. Religion, especially Hinduism, for them became a four-letter word, something to be looked down upon, relegated to private life, even discouraged via arrogant discourses of 'scientific temperament' and what not.
2014 is the year when the shackles which held the Hindu spirit down were broken. 2024 is the year when it received a great spiritual fillip. And the coming years, hopefully, will pave the way for Hindu cultural revival away from the modernist scientology and moral relativism.

Pavan Varma should take his own advice, either change his demeanour and contribute or shut up. When he was heading Nehru Centre in London, he was busy picking fights and turned it into a circus for selected elites rather than build that centre to be accessible and open to all Indians. In ICHR, he was busy serving Westerners, their fetish over the Kamasutra rather than promote a more holistic view of it. As cultural advisor to Nitish Kumar, he did nothing more than promote a "Jungle Raj" view of Bihari history. Pavan Varma's respect for Hindu civilization is mired in exoticism rather than real appreciation. Pavan Varma and his ilk can be best described by the phrase "Do as I say, not what I do".
Sorry, Prof Babones, it is very hard to take the likes of Pavan Varma seriously. Please don't waste our time preaching his worldview.
