One of my best friends was a PJ in Vietnam. He flew in the Jolly Greens into North Vietnam to rescue downed pilots. Once there he took the hoist down, usually under fire, to get the downed pilot to the hoist and attach him so he could be brought back to the helo.

Talk about amazing men! Have you ever watched the multi episode documentary of what it takes to be a PJ? I played every sport in high school and one sport in college and a little after. I learned to ignore the pain of the exercises and intense workouts all year long! I played with broken fingers, cracked jaw, no big toenails, stitches in my face, black eyes, sprained ankles, etc. I was more enduring than most. But, a PJ? Forget it man!! To make it takes an incredibly high level of mental ability. Most of the men who are muscular, ex-athletes, long distance runners and tough as shit men dropped out! Those who made it didn’t look like they would make it in the beginning! It’s beyond my comprehension of tough. These guys are incredibly different. I have never seen humans like that before. I had no idea what they did and what it took to become one. Delta and Navy seals are easier to pass!

I was a Major attached to a neurosurgical team as a CRNA in Balad, Iraq. I encountered PJ's on two occasions during my tour as they brought injured service members into our hospital. They were always humble and very professional. The work they did many times went unnoticed by those who were unaware of who they were. My quarters were very close to the airstrip. I always knew when I heard helicopters flying inbound that my pager was about to go off. To this day, I still cringe when I hear helicopters overhead.

When I was young the adrenaline dump was something we all sought after in a variety of ways. The older you get, the less enjoyable it is until eventually you get to a point where the adrenaline itself is a reminder that the shakes are soon to follow.
Nowadays I can't stand being startled, even mildly, lest it triggers the usual adrenaline response and and ensuing post-dump nervousness/shakiness and wobbly leg symptoms hop aboard as well.

Just watched this. I don't think many people understand how risky this was at the moment they were making the rescue for Luttrell. Low illumination, clouds, night. All terrible conditions for helicopters. So many things to go wrong. Most other missions would have been called off due these conditions. Very difficult. Major props to these pilots. Shows how well trained they were and how well they executed their mission.

'I am willing to die tonight to see him live', 'suck on that',,,, an a-10 pilot, processing the inability to laze the lz,,, trust me, he didnt see a break in the clouds in order to laze the lz. he created a fkn break in the clouds in order to laze that fkn lz. thats what a-10 pilots do. and that, son, is why we cannot train together, cannot swap spit as it were.. hats off to you guys, you do incredible work. thank you for your service .

Kudos and bravo to each of you!
Ideally, we, as a human race, all populating one planet, can someday unify against those who live behind the scenes that keep the human species broken into smaller categories that consistently battle each other. The same ancient bloodlines remaining in power have been cleverly setting us up to war against each other for centuries, profiting off both sides of every war they are responsible for creating the initial conditions later developing into outright warfare. I remain hopeful we'll one day cease to participate in their artificial globally murderous boardgames.

I live in Mesa AZ and everyday i see a group of two or three sometimes five Blackhawks flying south over mesa. I also worked next to Boeing where they build the Apaches. I got to see them flying real low all day long and could hear them test firing the 30mm. That's when my love for helicopters began.

I am not an American . Now in July 2021 Americans have left , Talibans are taking control of Afghanistan. So after 20 years, spending around 2 Trillion Dollars and loss of human lives what have you achieved? Iraq, Libya ,Syria, Afghanistan n next adventure perhaps Iran…I was a frequent traveler to these places.Once peaceful , beautiful hubs of great civilization are in chaos now literally mutilated by decades of senseless wars.

I'm kinda surprised 'Spanky' didn't receive a DFC for that - unless there's some weird fine print that says a reservist can't get one? Couldn't find much info on it.

Did you look at Spanky's patches around his uniform? Its all civilian US Dept of Customs. name badge says "Air Interdiction Unit" which is normal for drug interdiction off the US coasts. His gold badge says he's a Federal Agent.
I know the DEA had a bunch of narcs running around A-stan trying to "control drugs". This was not really publicized until the DEA agents filed a grievance for overtime pay and some kind of special combat pay. They were getting shot at with bullets and RPGs like any other tan uniformed US/European looking guys.
