Grazie, Maestro!

    He died the following year (12/26/92) after this recital at age 80. Chopin was a specialty and he performed all of Chopin's works over a 6 day recital period more than once. Also, he was named one the greatest pianists of the 20th Century in the Philips Records series. The Chopin was the highlight for me. Lots of POWER from NM no doubt in the first and last movement, the latter of which never fails to excite me greatly and I got goose bumps. I felt the slow movement was rushed a tad, with the need for more gentleness and expressiveness. But overall, this guy can play!

Grazie Nikita!

    Immense thanks for sharing this magnificent recital by a truly great artist who was kind enough to share a 2-hour concert with us. I loved everything from the Scarlatti to Chopin and Moussorsky, and 3 encores (I adored the Mozart & especially the Mendelssohn--WHAT MAGIC!!), all showing how technically proficient and musically gifted he was. I also liked it when he knew how to make good contrasts so that when the music was getting too loud and noisy (as in the 'Pictures'), he would know well enough to use little pedalling. He needed to make no facial grimaces. He just let the music emerge naturally from the piano.
    I was thinking of even much more interesting music making from him had he not pass away at 80, e.g. What would his 'Appassionata' or 'Emperor' sound like? What more magic would this consummate artist conjure for us? In a sense, he reminded me of Shura Cherkassy. (but probably SC would have given 4 encores--but that's not really the heart of the matter).
    RIP, Maestro Magaloff.

    Artist and pianist extraordinaire!! Thank you Maestro Magaloff for your contribution to all of us with your incredible performances over the years!! God Bless you, Sir, I only wish you were born later and be alive today. He was part of the jury during the 1980 Chopin competition in Warsaw. Along with Martha Argerich boycotted that Jury, when Ivo Pogeroelich was eliminated after 3 round, some of whom I knew personally while attending music conservatory in Warsaw, Poland. Ivo won!!! anyway!! Unfortunately, these jurors wanted every pianist to perform certain way. Thank goodness Ivo and Alexei Sultanov were non-conformer. Tragic what has happened to Alexei, incredibly talented artist and pianist extraordinaire passing away at 35 years of age!! being denied first prize at the competition. Thank God he won Van Cilburn, deserved it. Please listen to his performance of Rachmaninoff concerto no 2, in Texas, the same with Chopin concerto no 2 in F minor in Warsaw!!!! He saw denied first prize!! Fortunately, he did not accept it., God Bless you and Nikita Magaloff.

    80 yrs old and this is the first time this longtime classical music lover has even heard of him. Regarding this supposed Chopin expert his form is awful and poor dynamics. His phrases are not clearly defined and the phrases run into each other, ie., there is no slight pause in between sceneries. Very sloppy and sordid lack of freshness. What is unique about his playing, I wonder?

  • @MrInterestingthings
    @MrInterestingthings 7 років тому +1

    The 1st movement of his Be sonata was really not to my taste. Surprised when I hear Russian from his generation play Mozart. Horowitz did it beautifully. Gilles not sure. Richter better than most. 2nd mov would frighten many I'm sure. Unkind of me to say. Schiff, lupu, uchida, brendel millions play this music with taste. Finale was interesting in his hands. Contrasts too big and fortepiani give one no concept of his voicings and finally music is no better for it. This famous teacher should meet Huber, lulu krauss even. Mozart looks easy on page but it can be ruined easily. Finale almost unscathed. His Scarlatti not great music-making. Nevermind. Those who know know. Everyone came to his atelier.

    • @MrInterestingthings
      @MrInterestingthings 7 років тому +1

      The 2nd Scarlatti is amazing. I'll never be able to get through that with such nimble, light touch. Geese. He should have started with Scarlatti perhaps. His Chopin bminor sonata too old fashioned. He would have better program 2nd sonata. Always the line prominent. 2nd subject ofcourse played with more subtly by most. Let's here Hofmann in this he made tapes of this. Wish ready lupu played recorded Chopin more class than anyone. Never heard perahia in these 2.his old records. I must find. So many others. Bachauer left so little. Oh well. Imagine lhevinne colors in this music. Hmm.

  • @MrInterestingthings
    @MrInterestingthings 7 років тому +1

    Hear1977 Gilels Chopin 3rd sonata live. Some if the best thinking, playing EVER! Few can play Chopin largo of 3rd sonata. Every note related to whole and it tells us everything about judgement of pianist who touches it. We need the finale to get away from the minds who can't feel the largo. I will never touch it. Finale easy to make impression. No fire here. He is tired now possibly. He has done great things in his life and touched hundreds so I can only be quiet. Harasewiech, arrau yuck, I'd like to hear a good 3rd sonata. Novaes? I must go search. Blaechaz is great Chopinist.why so fast Mussorgsky beginning. Gotta go. Hate pedalling in next number. Lugubrious. Terrible conception. Gotta go.

    • @djmotise
      @djmotise 4 роки тому +3

      Oh please. Stop. He's 80 here! And yet he still rarely misses a note and supplies endless power and clarity. Do you have any idea what it feels like to be 80? At 60 people begin to lose vision, stamina, balance in their physical life. Bones joints and muscles begin to falter greatly. Yet he still plays like this. Go listen to this great pianist younger. No fire? Listen to his Chopin Etudes recording. Magaloff was all about fire and energy. To quote your "gotta go." If that's a phrase of yours, then please GO. And don't return. You will remember your words when and if you live to be this age.
