    In the US. Sold a 981 boxster S to order one of these for a few reasons. A) the 3.8 991 S engine b) the car is beautiful IMO c) I love the imperfections. It's not perfect for everyone - which only makes it more attractive to me.
    d) that sound..
    Great review!

    Had a 2015 Boxster GTS; now have a 2016 Spyder.
    I traded because I was using it mainly as a canyon carver or weekend getaway and not for multi-day road trips so went with the Spyder for: 1) the increased power/torque of the Spyder over the GTS , 2) the suspension is better tuned in the Spyder, 3) the styling and quirky features (e.g. cloth door pulls, manual roof). I swapped out the Alcantara seat inserts for red/black pepita houndstooth which make the interior pop (exterior is Guards Red). The only performance mod I've done is to swap out the OEM exhaust headers for CarGraphics "Sport" headers (they still have cats so no CEL warnings); as they say in Spinal Tap, now "It goes to 11!"
    If I were planning mulit day road trips, I'd go with the GTS (actually, I'd probably go with a Lexus LC500 in that case) for the convenience of the power roof and PASM.
    As you say at around 17:55, the car makes you feel like a much better driver than you are (or at least *I* am). I'm in southern Missouri and, believe it or not, there are some great twistie routes here and in northern Arkansas that are fantastic. Road therapy is very cathartic.

      I know you posted this 3 years ago, but I’m in Arkansas and drive those awesome Ozark roads quite often, and now I’m debating between a 981 GTS and a Spyder…manual in both cases. You still glad you traded the GTS for the Spyder?

    • @DrBilly90210
      @DrBilly90210 8 місяців тому +1

      @@wesleywalls7582 Yup, still happy with Spyder. We've done a couple of week-long road trips (> 2K miles) and it worked out well. GTS was a wonderful car, but I like the Spyder more. The current series (718) would be more of a challenge I think in terms of comparing GTS to Spyder.

    MotoMan - your video inspired me to make to move I was debating (for
    some time) and go buy my now beloved Spyder. I traded in a beautiful
    black cabriolet 997 4S - which I loved! (I was never that fond of cabs... Until I
    actually drove one...) I can remember being sad leaving my baby behind...
    And forgetting COMPLETELY about it once laying eyes on my Spyder in the
    flesh and turning the key! Its an absolute beauty!! The drive is insane,
    its rapid and just loves to be driven. The engine is a peach - its like a big go-kart. The roof - it just adds to its charm. And I
    have read some negative comments on the sounds... The videos on UA-cam
    really don't do it justice - not at all. Trust me - it sounds AWESOME!! I
    have had my car since March, and still cant wait to drive it -
    every-single-time. Thumbs up for the best Spyder review on the net!

    This Boxster Spyder is my weapon of choice. I live in the midwest, Ohio and there are not too many convertible days. We do have some great driving roads, Porsche roads as I call them. Love the 911. In love with the Boxster Spyder. Currently drive a 15 VW GTI.

    I have a 05 Boxster S which I’m selling to a friend. Short shifter, lightweight flywheel, Bilsteins, full Milltek, ECU tune. About 310hp 3.2 motor. I’m getting a 2016 Spyder, ceramics, GT Silver over red Leather. Live near Lake Tahoe, great roads. Can’t wait!

I live in Washington state Spokane and here in the Nw we have great secondary twisty canyon roads all over. So this 2016 Spyder is on My Bucket list.

    Thanks for another great review! I just saw one of these at my local C&C in Virginia and it's a real beauty. I've driven the Boxter GTS on the track and passed 911s with it. If this one's even better than the Spyder is the one to get. Current ride '15 Targa 4s past '09 997.2 C2SC.

    I decided and getting my Spyder this Thursday. Originally wanted the GT4, but the insane markup (still 12 -15k atm) and usability (will be weekend car only) deterred me from paying the extra for a lesser driving time. The Spyder may lose to the GT4 in performance overall, but not by much. I also disagree that it's not a track car, though it is as crazy as the GT4, the track time on this can stand on its own. In terms of spec, visual, and its rarity (which someone mentioned, may holds its value like the 2011 spyders) convinced me to buy it over the Evora 400 (depreciation is uncertain plus multiple delays), 2017 911, a used 2014 911 (cheaper), Bentley Continental GT, or a used M6 (2014). At the end of the day, I'm certain this will hold its value slightly better than the rest while it's a fun and different looking car. Overall, it's a great value and good bang for the buck.

    Thank you for the detailed and fun review! I have a '14 Boxster S with quite a few options. I considered the GTS, but most of my driving is on road trips with as much time as possible on twisty roads. I wanted PASM, PTV, and 19" wheels. I didn't want the sport exhaust. I wanted a car I could take on extended road trips with my wife (longest trip was 70 days and 14,000 miles).. I would love to rent a '16 Boxster Spyder for a couple of days of mountain driving in the Sierra Nevada or SoCal mountains, but it seems too specialized for most of my driving.

    I love this car... I really, really love this car... Lightweight, big power, manual, "spyder roof" that actually works, wheels look awesome and those buttresses! Beautiful, I am already specing one out in my head... This is the one I would have for sure! Off to the Porsche Configurator I go... Mele Kalikimaka George! Lets catch up in 2016, seriously! Its been way too long. Fiesta is getting some upgrades soon so we should go enjoy the canyons again, this time minus the travel visas... Glad you enjoyed the islands. Another beautiful film. Happy New Year and keep up the good work. Mahalo.

      It depends on the type of driver you are. If you like light weight sporty cars then Porsche is definitely the brand to go with.
      I would suggest getting a test drive on more than one occasion and also go to a track day experience to get a feel for the limits of the car.

    Already ordered one. 4 months ago. Comes in another 2-3 months. Same build as what your demo looks like. I am in Australia and I track a lot (Audi TTS before) and will track this evey 3 months too. Main purpose though is not track but escapism. The top down, the sound, the manual box and getting lost in the country side. A reason to live and a reason to work as hard as I do - the satisfaction driving gives me is in orders of magnitude greater than the cost of these things - which in Aus is AUD$210K delivered.
    It will not be a DD. For that I have car share systems. Buying a car as a DD in 2016 in a modern city is stooopid. I am also getting as investment. Seeing as how the last air cooled cars rocketed in price and GT4's already and the last manual 997 991's GT3's - this too is a last gasp of an era.

      +Princess Peach I got the 3M clear bra/protection on everything in front of the doors. Now I'm considering doing the doors and the rear quarter as well because I've hear that the aerodynamics of the 981 plus the suction of the intakes tends to pull debris against the sides of the car.

    Liked your review, agree completely with your comments regarding how special this car is, i would choose the Spyder over any kind of Boxster or Cayman precisely because of the details like the roof top, handle bars and of course engine and design... currently own a 991 GT3 as my second car but seriously thinking of getting the Spyder because it's going to be the last of the breed...

    I'm not the biggest fan of convertibles. Probably because I grew up and live in the Pacific Northwest. you would have to do a lot of work to convince me that it's worth having all that extra weight for 3 months a year of top down driving enjoyment. :) But, if I were to choose, it would have to be the Spyder. The sound that car makes.... And the lines of the rear end are beautiful.
    I currently drive a Golf R MK7 with, as God intended, a 6 speed manual.

    If one is a serious sport car enthusiast, is considering a sports car as a toy and not just a transportation instrument, then the Lotus is the choice, anytime. A simple Lotus Elise SC is light years ahead in terms of pure driving experience. And it is made by an honest company, to boot.

    Don't know why, because of the presenter or because of the little imperfections that makes it more human ''French/English'' influence, or was
    because of gloves. But definetly after the 1977 Targa (poster on the wall - zone) this is one of my favourites... the sound, the engine, the looks of it...

Driven a gen 1 spyder - lovely, very taught, nibble = very nice. This car - perfect for me, ticks all the boxes. Which Boxster. For me it's the S plus almost all the GTS options. I got mine on 6 Dec and immediately went in a road trip vacation driving the Garden route in South Africa. I live in Johannesburg and drive the 1200km to Cape Town stopping at various coastal Towns along the way. Every day that I didn't drive much I looked forward to the days when I drove lots. The Outeniqua Pass is probably one of the best driving roads in the world. It was wonderful. By the car is still my daily driver with all the comforts for daily use. I like the auto roof for when it gets too hot, or you come off the freeway down a pass and you can just slow down and pop the roof down for some fun.

    • @porscheoscar
      @porscheoscar 8 років тому +2

      Boxster was never a chick car in the first place. The Boxster was and is the best roadster Porsche offer and the model that has set the bar in its class for 20 straight years. it's the only Porsche model you can say that about. And yhe very first Porsche ever built by Mr. Porsche was a two seater roadster with a boxer engine placed in the middle...exactly like a Boxster. I'm not sure why people call a five speed Porsche roadster a chick car... the overwhelming majority want nothing to do with manual transmissions and they don't want to mess up their hair. The typical Boxster owner is probably a middle-aged professional white male with a wife and kids. Range Rover or Cayenne... those are definitely chick cars.

    • @harlemkiid149
      @harlemkiid149 8 років тому

      porscheoscar The transmission is irrelevant it was as much a chick car as the Mini Cooper which comes overwhelmingly in a manual. Typical owner of a boxster being a professional white male lol you just lost what little credibility you had with that statement? Where's your data to back up such a claim? Being a "Professional" is quite subjective in today's world. Location is also subjective,been stationed all over the world and the only places I've really seen a ton of Porsches were in LA and Atlanta,most boxsters were being driven by women but what do I know.

    • @porscheoscar
      @porscheoscar 8 років тому +1

      +Nicky_Projectz I think you lost all credibility on the topic of sports cars by calling a Mini Cooper a chick car. thanks for confirming my initial impression. and of course there are statistics on demographics of the typical owner of German luxury sports cars. there are the same for Japanese and American sports cars. you sound like a young person.. none of this is new only perhaps your anecdotes.

      porscheoscar Of course there are statistics but....Where's your source,where's your data to back up such a claim?I am young,young enough to own a 981 GTS but that's neither here nor there. Mini's are chick cars imo. Boxsters were chick cars imo. It's all subjective.

      +Nicky_Projectz if your opinion is that the world is flat it's still only your opinion. 9 in 10 people experienced in high performance driving with hundreds of hours of seat time would have only one reaction to hearing that the Porsche roadster and the Mini Cooper are chick cars: laughter. These two cars along with the Miata are probably the three most frequently spotted cars at track days and autocross events from Laguna Seca to Watkins to Daytona.

    Today is Nov. 8, 2023. After 8 years, I can confirm that the Spyder holds its value incredibly well.. I just traded in my 2013 Boxster S for a 2016 Spyder and the total price is just a tad under 100k. If you’re the original owner of a Spyder you wouldn’t even lose a penny selling it today! (Inflation aside, of course).

    I can tell you fell in love with it from the tone of your voice. must've brought some good memories … minus the waiting on the side of the road for a tow truck part of course :)
    You know, cars like the Spyder (& 1M) sound like a mix of off-the-shelf parts (think old GM) on paper, but once you drive it … oooh baby! These ingredients once mixed together form a very special formula & the result is … well, Santa María, Madre De Dios!!!
    What Boxter would I pick? Hhmm, I suppose I'll go with the Spyder … Mahogany Metallic (Porsche speak for Majestic Plum) over dark Cognac (with Luxor beige gauges & seats belts) with the stainless steel trim & I'll do something about the fake buttons.
    What about you? Which Boxter (or Cayman if you can resist a convertible lol) would you choose?
    As for what I drive, nothing at the moment.
    The Spyder makes a fitting finale for season5 & I'm looking forward to season6!
    Love the editing on this episode M!
    Merry Christmas M …

For example, when I have gotten ANY of my Lotus' up to speed, buzzy, uncomfortable and/or cramped for long drives. Not so with any Porsche road car I have driven. Hope that clarifies it a bit . . .

    Merry Christmas MotoMan. You posed an interesting question. I am very fond of the Boxster. I missed it more than my track modified Elise S2, which was supercharged to around 270 wheel hp. Living in the greater Los Angeles area, the rational brain will choose a PDK Boxster S as ideal transport. The extra comfort will be a plus on day to day LA freeway commute. The heart says the Spyder all the way. 3.8L NA engine and just absolutely gorgeous looks. If I had to drive it daily, I would ask Ruf to build me a 3800S with PDK and Spyder body style. I can put up with the manual uninsulated roof. But stick shift on a daily 2 hour bumper to bumper 405 freeway commute -- give me the PDK with AC and stereo. If it was strictly a week end toy, then Spyder all the way. No second thoughts. In summary: 1. M-F freeway commute -- Boxster S PDK. 2. Weekend toy: Spyder. 3. Mon - Sun Boxster: Ruf 3800 S PDK with Spyder body style, AC and stereo.

    • @MotoManTV
      @MotoManTV  8 років тому

      +David Partono Good detail . . . One I would answer this way: box standard Spyder for a weekend toy and a used Hyundai or Kia for the commute. Not a huge fan of customizing a car like this for two reasons: 1.) You never get your money back and in this case 2.) I feel pretty strongly that resale will be high in the first couple of years and in 6 - 8 years it will start to keep pace with inflation or even appreciate . . .

    • @davidpartono6205
      @davidpartono6205 8 років тому

      +MotoManTV If you have a LA like daily commute and you can only have one Boxster, would you choose the Spyder or GTS PDK? No second car.

    • @MotoManTV
      @MotoManTV  8 років тому

      +David Partono I would do EXACTLY as I stated above . . . The Spyder with the manual and then get an inexpensive car to commute in. Most likely something fun but practical. That said, I try to answer these questions as if what would I do? Well, I live in LA - have lived in London and New York, and in most cases, I choose a little less space to avoid long commutes - added benefit: More fund cars. Happy 2016!

      +bighands69 he's right. they absolutely should bave consulted with Mazda. the idea that you have to get out of the car and walk over to the other side, fidle here, fiddle there and fiddle some more on a NON electric top is ridiculous. The Miata top is lowered with one hand from the driver's seat, in five seconds ot less. the whole point of a Spyder is simplicity and weight reduction. The Miata top does that flawlessly. Porsche are very stubborn in admitting when they over engineer things as well as when they've made a huge blunder (see m96 IMS, AOS and GT3 coolant pipes).

    • @gaivoron
      @gaivoron 8 років тому +2

      +porscheoscar exactly my point. Miata rag top is simplest and probably the quickest roof.

    • @4rzaluz
      @4rzaluz 8 років тому +1

      +porscheoscar As much as I agree with your statement, that would be right for the basic boxster to cut costs and weight, but this spyder is a matter of style and performance in a collectors car that would be desired for the next 30, years it has to be unique.

    • @1957robertjohnson
      @1957robertjohnson 7 років тому

      If it wasn't for the Miata, there would be no Boxster. It was the Miata's success that convinced Porsche that a roadster would be profitable. And it was the Boxster that saved Porsche from bankruptcy and was it's best seller for 7 years until the Cayenne was introduced. So don't diss the Miata.

    You put the the top down incorrectly. You should not have put the trunk all the way down when you did before the wings. You put the trunk almost all the way down. And then fully shut the trunk as the last step. Tightens the roof as much as it can be.

      Ireland is a horrible car market. Owning a Porsche in Ireland is very hard as there are few dealerships and the government tax the hell out of cars.
      A base Boxer in the UK costs about £40,000 sterling in Ireland you could be looking at E80,000 plus.
      It is suppose to be lightweight cheap sports car that can compete with other more expensive sports cars.
      The Green part in Ireland with the socialist ecco warriors have made car expensive as hell. VRT and road tax is just insane.

    • @michaelherron4306
      @michaelherron4306 8 років тому

      I know, it's dire. A lot of sports cars have in fact been exported in recent years because of a VRT refund scheme which is good if you want to sell your car but doesn't do much for the market here. The positive side to cars going turbo I suppose is a reduction in co2 emissions which means less VRT + road tax.

    • @bighands69
      @bighands69 8 років тому

      +Michael Herron
      Anybody who buys a turbo today will be facing extra taxes down the line.
      The socialist green movements next move will be to tax excess power. There will not be happy until we are all going around in little 1 litre cars. and then bikes (I love bikes).
      They are even talking about how cows are bad for the environment because they eat too much grass and release too much gas.
      Ireland is at some of the most extreme anti car policies in the world.
      They have already pushed the price of electricity up by regulations. Cars are going to become difficult in Ireland.

    This car really shocked me with its disjointed design. From the A pillar back it is glorious, beauty, efficient line and surface. A real tribute to the the Spyder name of yore a real car for Steve Mcqueen, but the front looks too macho, too Dwayne Johnson. The muscularity is so over emphasized with an angularity that the front and rear dont match at all. That rear deck lid is just so graceful when it slopes to the rear of the car and refreshingly descends instead of rising to a tall rear like so many other cars in 2015 that are desperate to evoke power and speed in their form (eg corvette). The front looks like it has been milled on a cnc machine with all its perfect radiuses straight lines. The wheel choice doesn't compliment the smooth surfaces either- they work with the front, but not the rear or the sides. Something softer and an inch smaller would have been much better. This car needs round/oval headlights up front, much smaller intakes and no lower splitter/lip. "But I digress"
