- Step by step video of how we recover fully upholstered dining chairs into a new fabric. We hope this will help show the work involved and also act as a tutorial for anyone thinking of trying it themselves.
If you are considering this it would help to have a basic knowledge of upholstery techniques such as copying patterns, stitching, top stitching and making cuts.

wow they look great! I am planning on doing my one chair because the fabric got old and I have zero experience with upholstery. The topstitching for the back piece looks a little tricky but thank you for the video.

Great video thank you for sharing. Just rescued 4 chairs in this style destined for the tip simply because the leather is worn! I find than scandalous when with some dedication and work they can have an entirely new lease of life.

I’d like to thank you for this video! My lockdown project has been upholstering my dining chairs! I haven’t used a sewing machine since I was 14 years old! And I’m not perfect, you make it look so easy!! The bends are most definitely the hardest! But for my first effort it’s not bad! My chairs are still so stable even after 15 years so I’m happy that they are getting another chance to live!! Thanks again for the lesson and motivation!!!! 🙌🏾

I'm flabbergasted as to the prices of dining chairs these days. And lets be real, they DO NOT make them like they used to! It is definately worth the effort / expense to refurbish old chairs than buy new.

Hello and thank you for watching our video. Ideally a pneumatic staple gun is best but an electric one could still work as long as it’s strong enough to fire into the wood frame. You’ll need to try your fabric on the machine to see if it will work, if it can see through 4 layers then you should be fine. If possible an industrial walking foot machine would be the best option.
This is great, best I have seen. I am in AU, if I send measurements do you take orders? I don’t think I’d be able to do this it looks very difficult
Sofia Ciancia Hello, thank you for watching and your nice comments, unfortunately for these type of chairs we would need the actual covers or ideally a cover and frame to make sure the new ones are perfect. I’m sure there should be someone closer to you who would be able to help or if you have the tools and a little upholstery knowledge I’m sure you could try them yourself, fabric is easier to work with than faux leather as it can be unpicked and re stitched without leaving holes. Great work. Please put here the name of the tools you used so we can buy them. That stepler is electric? Do we need professional sewing machine? Can be done by amateur? Or this is just to show how pro's work?
Hi thank you and thanks for watching. There are links to some of the tools in the description. The staple gun is pneumatic so you will need an air compressor as well which I will add to the description to give you an idea of what we use but you can use electric. You could use a household sewing machine but industrial is better. This can definitely be done by an amateur if you follow all the video instructions, it would help if you have a little experience with sewing and making patterns but not essential. I know this isn’t easy, but you make it look so simple. Also do I need a special sewing machine?
Hi and thanks for watching. Hopefully a local upholsterer will be able to help you with fabric as we are happy to sell ours for people to do their own projects. If not then there are websites that sell upholstery grade material. In terms of a sewing machine then an industrial walking foot machine will make the job much easier.
Fantastic. You make this look easy although I’m sure it’s not, especially when putting all the pieces together. I’m hoping to have a go but wondering how many meters of fabric to order for 6 similar chairs to those in your video. I’m thinking maybe 2m per chair?
Thanks for watching and your nice comments. The first might be tricky but you’ll get better on each one, after a hundred or more it gets a LOT easier 😄. We usually say 1.5 mtr per chair which should leave you enough for a couple of mistakes should anything go a little wrong while cutting or sewing. Hi and thanks for watching! Yes you can definitely use fabric and just follow the video and it will work fine. Just remember if it’s a pattern fabric to centre it and match the pattern on each one so it looks nice and neat. Best of luck and feel free to ask any questions.

Wonderful video thank you for sharing. I’m about to reupholster my first chair. What fabric did you use for the fly bit? Mine was pulled down and stapled with ribbons of fabric. I guess it was a cheap chair!
Thank you and thanks for watching. The fly can be made from anything you have spare and quite often you can just use the original top fabric once you’re finished with it. Yes they do sometimes put ribbons as well usually on the outer edges that then pull down the outside of the chair.

Hi. Thanks for sharing this. I’ve stripped one of my 6 dining room chairs, hoping to give it a try. My concern is getting the outside top stitch round the top of the back. My seats are less rounded at the top so it’s going to be difficult to walk the foot around. Any tips for an amateur?
Hi, thanks for watching. Yes, go as slow as possible and even just use your hand on the wheel rather than pedal to have complete control over the machine, if possible make a spare back, or at least the top part, from some scrap and have a couple of practice runs. You might also find trimming some of the excess fabric from the seam on the corner helps.

tracie barrass I think it would depend on the fabric you wanted to use and which domestic machine you were using, for faux leather or thick fabric I think industrial would definitely be needed especially to top stitch. Try a test piece first and you’ll get an idea of what your machine can do. Hope this helps!

Charlotte Pearson Hi, thank you for watching, there are different variations but this is called silk film, it’s very thin and smooth to aid slipping the cover on, if you can’t find this you can use regular cling film, extra wide makes it easier. Hope this helps.

Z. Deutch Hi, the plastic on the back helps with putting the fabric on the frame as it reduces friction, you don’t have to use it but sometimes it can help a lot as some fabrics stick to the foam

So I watched another video and she took the chair apart. So then there was the seat cover and the back cover.
I haven't taken my chair apart to see but which way is better/easier? 1 solid piece of fabric to cover the chair or 2 separate pieces??
Thank you for watching. We find that this way usually gives a cleaner finish and go back together quicker but does rely on the pattern being pretty much perfect whereas doing them as separate give a bit more leeway when putting it all back together and might be easier if someone is just starting out. Both are fine and depending on the chair one way may be more suitable that the other. Hope this helps.

Beautiful job. What sort of life should you get out of the material assuming daily use? My PU leather ones are ten years old and have started to delaminate! They look identical to yours.
To be honest we’re not sure, 10 years is good and past what the manufacturer would class as lifespan but wouldn’t be surprised for longer as some of the new faux leathers are extremely tough and versatile. The really bad stuff only tends to last 6 months to a year. We have one customer who has an original Parker Knoll recliner in vinyl that’s 40 years old and still as supple as real leather because he’s cared for it so well.

@@tigershoot if you’re in the UK then you could purchase from a local upholsterer, this one we used is from a company called Cristina Marrone which is a brand who most upholsterers use. If not UK then again I would speak to a local upholsterer to ask their advise on good product
Hi, great video, just wondering ... what would happen if snips were made in the curved fabric instead of the straight fabric when sewing them together? Thanks
You have to cut the strait part to allow it to follow the shape of the curve, without doing it or doing it in the curve will mean the strait part won’t follow it properly and make sewing very hard. If you practice both ways on some spare fabric you’ll see the difference.

Can you make this on a domestic sewing machine, and what needle would you use please?
Hi, yes it may be possible but would want to have as heavy needle as possible and do a test first, would probably be easier to do in fabric with a domestic machine and also use a strong thread like a nylon bonded m40, using an industrial machine is the easiest with a walking foot if you have access to one. Hello, thank you for watching. All our fabric comes roughly 54 inch wide and we would usually allow 1.5mtr per chair at this width.
I have a set of 6 that I would like re-upholstered. The factory faux is horrible, cheap and now tearing easily, what would the cost of a set of 6 be? In the same leather you used in this tutorial. The sides aren’t angled like the chair in your video but the backs, too curve and seat cushion are very similar. We’re in Yorkshire ?

Hi, thanks for watching. We use industrial walking foot machines with a 110Nm needle as it’s not as tough as real leather. A heavy domestic walking foot with a heavy needle may be fine too but you’d have to try it first and see.

I have been trying to source some, do you know anywhere this might be available in smaller quantities in the UK? I can only find massive quantities so far. Many thanks.
Hi, thanks for watching and for the nice feedback. Silk film is mostly sold on very large rolls so could be worth asking a local upholsterer if they have any you could buy, alternatively a piece or extra wide cling film would help just being put over the top of the backs to stop fabric gripping the foam/Dacron.

I found it after I had stripped the chair and separated the pieces & one tip I didn’t do was to make notches to match up later so will backtrack and make sure I have those in place. So far, I used tkt30 thread with a 120 needle, but I tried with a much smaller size needles and it was working even with a 90 size needle. Do you think I should go with tkt40 thread instead of a tkt30 or is not a big difference between the two?
@@UFOENGINE you’ll probably be fine with the 30 if that’s what you have in stock, we like the M40 as it’s just a bit stronger
