Masterclass with Professor Günter Pichler in which they work on the first movement of Mendelssohn's String quartet op 12. This masterclass took place at the Escuela Superior de Música Reina Sofía, Madrid 2006.

Abstract:
In this fragment of the masterclass, Professor Pichler focuses on the first part of the movement, the introduction Adagio ma non troppo. He gives some tips for the interpretation and talks about different colours and how to get them. He advises to think in a big hall and a look for that can be heard far away. The quartet must create their own way to express and the balance among parts. Pichler also explains that the portato is the personal style of expression. It is important to be aware of the possibilities of the right hand: relaxation and expression together, and then combine with the left hand. They talk about dynamics as a tool for expressiveness, portamento and character.
