In this video Canadian Guitarist/producer Dean Wolfe reacts to the Cocteau Twins' sixth studio album (and my first time hearing them) Heaven of Las Vegas. Tracks 6-7: I Wear Your Ring, Fotzepolitic.
A LITTLE ABOUT ME: I'm Dean Wolfe, a mostly self-taught Canadian guitarist/composer/multi-instrumentalist/singer/producer/performer. I started out as a full time musician, on the road at age 17 for two years, then went part-time ever since, while holding day careers including chef and spiritual health care while raising a family.
As a producer I've made hundreds of my own songs for media and award winning documentaries etc. I've been in several bands including a prog/jazz fusion act nFuze, performing in International Jazz festivals and jazz clubs. I mostly abandoned the prog genre in the 90s but have returned to it now with vigour 30 years later. So much prog! My own prog band was rejected by record labels as "too progressive' in the late 80s, so i detoured into grunge, pop and alternative instead (then folk / acoustic fingerstyle guitar and ambient electronic as well). At the end of 2022 I fell into a shoegaze rabbit hole (so you will see lots featured here.)

This album is totally beautiful. Liz Fraser is one of the most emotion-evoking singers I’ve ever heard. Like a lot of my favorite Japanese singers, I don’t NEED to know the words or even the language to have my soul so deeply moved. I’m sure you are familiar with the Massive Attack song Tears, Liz did that song and a couple of others with them.

Funny the ABBA comparison. As a teenager I was reading an in-flight magazine after this album's release, and the music reviewer snarkily called it "ABBA for college students." I took it as a compliment lol

That is spot on. Cocteau Twins, on some of this and Blue Bell Knoll and Four Calendar Cafe sound like a tripped-out Abba from another dimension.

I Wear Your Ring is probably one of my favourite vocal performances in any piece of music ever. Some of the interweaving harmonies are mind-blowingly good. Go Liz!

Long time mega-fan of this group but great catch that it sounded like Abba on I Wear Your Ring. Never made that connection over the years. Great reactions and glad you enjoy the group. They are truly magical and this album is a masterpiece fullstop.

Not sure anything tops I Wear Your Ring. The album is amazing but that song is just so beautiful.

I’ve loved the Twins since high school. They never get old and I’m still discovering songs. IDK how people haven’t heard the Cocteau Twins. Their songs were featured in the Lovely Bones and Mysterious Skin films. When Mikey Cyrus performed Heaven or Las Vegas and says no one heard of it I was 🤬

Along with ABBA, I hear a touch of Karen Carpenter when Liz Fraser uses her lower register - especially on I Wear Your Ring and Wolf In The Breast.

The Cocteau Twins discography evolves from a post punk-gothic, going through the ethereal wave until reaching dream pop at the end of the 80s, ALL their albums with a really interesting proposal, (perhaps the first ones do not enjoy the best production, but that's something artists get by recording in the studio I guess). Treasure my fav, and the EPs
    cool reaction
