It was strange to me why many of them were looking at me, then one of them told me that I look just like a Boer from South Africa (I'm 196 cm tall), not only looks, but I generally exude that, they were thinking I'm from there. Als jemand dessen Muttersprache Deutsch ist muss ich sagen, dass es mich ziemlich erstaunt, wie nah einige der Wörter denen der heutigen deutschen Sprache sind. besonders wenn die Küsten nahen Dialektzonen mit bedacht werden. As someone whose native language is German, I have to say that I am quite amazed at how close some of the words are to those of today's German language. especially when the dialect zones near the coast are taken into account.
It is even closer to Dutch. But Dutch is itself an institutionalized version of Lower German dialect. Afrikaans is à bit like old-dutch. Still clearly understandable by Flemish and Dutch-speakers.
You do realize the British were fighting other wars around the world in China, logistically how are they going to get their whole army their. And the British didn’t have a large standing army and often had would rather recruit mercenaries to fight. That being said the boers fought a very good guerilla war. But doomed from the start.

It dont matter if it was only a few tribes, a few hundred, a few thousands, and a few millions. The land is theirs since they were the first and true people of that specific areas. The whites are never going to be africans nor should they have a right to that land, and same goes vice versa africans will never have a claim to Europe etc. @@pepin8277

As someone whose native language is German, I have to say that I am quite amazed at how close some of the words are to those of today's German language.

It is even closer to Dutch. But Dutch is itself an institutionalized version of Lower German dialect. Afrikaans is à bit like old-dutch. Still clearly understandable by Flemish and Dutch-speakers.

The Boers started a war in 1899 against the British Empire, due to border violations. The British had learnt from their mistake to underestimate the Boers in the First Boer War and thus in the Second Boer War they had a different way of getting the Boers on their knees. (Genocide, which the British government never apologized for.) The Boer Republics had no choice other then to bow to Great Britain, however the British knew the Boers would never accept the Union Jack as flag. And as such the Van Riebeeckflag was found as compromise. It is the Prince's Flag, the first flag to have flown on the Cape (and thus the latter country of South Africa) with a mirrowed version of the Union Jack (to represent Anglo-Africans) and the flags of the Boer Republics, where OFS's flag is the one who forms a wall between the two. This is symbollically because President Steyn of the OFS tried to negotiate just before the war started.
