- the seat is really comfortable and a big upgrade from stock. the wife is light enough that she had a hard time with the old spring ride to get it to slide down, if the seat was set for my weight she was on a solid board. now with air she can lower it and slide forward.
got the transmission tore down and it looks like all i need is B range gear and bearings. otherwise shift collars, and things looked good. i will put syncro disks on topshaft
Howdy Jon. These are interesting to me in case I have ever get bigger problems than I have already. 🤣
Lol
Jon and poison that's been awhile!!
How did you route the wires to keep them hidden for the seat compressor?
Under the floor matt.
How can you work on that trans with all that dirt and chaff around the top edges? I'd have all that down inside the case in no time. Guess I'm a clean freak but I like to steam everything off before opening things ub.
Everything gets scrubbed and cleaned, going together it's like brand new inside.
@@jonstevensmaplegrovefarms3754 you should see a couple tractors I built. Google John Deere 4820. That's my latest.
Hello, couple months ago i bought john deere 4040s, and yesterday the "c" dosent work on 1,2,3,4 but on r1, r2 normaly work, can you help me whot i shuld to do with this Gear?
You don't have forward gears in C range you almost can't have reverse. The first question or thing I would try would be if you left lever in any Gear 1 2 3 or 4. Then the range lever try it in its normal spot and slowly let the clutch out and see if the tractor tries to move. So then doesn't give a little kick through the range lever and stop moving or do you hear any grinding
@@jonstevensmaplegrovefarms3754 yee on forward c i hear grinding and the tractors on 1-4 going On litle forward, its feals like all the Gear move
@@jorek233
So if the range lever is grinding in C then see if you can move the lever a side of its pocket that it fits in and go forward just a touch more and see if it will actually work
1000 piece jig saw puzzle, (not for children, batteries and tools not included) :)
All I got got is wow. Haven’t ever seen a rear end torn that far apart before!
That must be an early 4430? It'll be nice when you get it done.
Yes, early but not super early,
If you look at the cabs of modern tractors now... you could fit a lazy boy in there😂
Ha! That's what I need!
I like the Massey that I can straighten my legs once in a while.
My 4440 just started acting like it doesn't want to go from b3 to b4 when I'm pulling something. Is this a start for something bad about to happen?
if you slap the lever hard does it shift? does it work in 1 to 2 shift? if it works there that is the same shift as 3-4, i would check linkage first. behind right battery box you will see a tiny rod laying horizontal hooked to a bracket. make sure the pin isnt getting worn or the hole.
I'm guessing your skill has saved you tens of thousands in repair bills. Very impressive!!
Don't know if I could be farming if I had to pay to have everything fixed
👍The most important part inside a tractor.
I am a big guy,and i allready have problems with my back, because the seats in my tractors were not designed to handle a big guy.
It would have been better with no seats, because it s 1000 times worst when the seat lifts you, when you hit a bump, then you crash down, all the way to the plate.
I intend to change them all this spring..
Yes, bottom out sends that shock up your spine.
Hi Jon. Is that seat kit from k&m by chance. I had a lot of the same problems with the nuts for spacers and bolt heads in the way figment issues.
It is.
Glad I am not the only one who thought it was a cheap design.
Do you have a part number for the green piece you installed to widen the seat well
I do not it came with the seat kit.
Definitely not a weekend job
I would love to do the seat upgrade on my tractor
I bought a 4430 quadrange a few months ago I’m getting ready to tear down. Wasn’t going in gears very well so I just replaced cab mounts, seemed to help but it still comes out of c range. I also have to replace the hydraulic filter every couple hours even after I’ve drained the fluid and put new in, I’m getting a lot of sliver looking fluid out each time I have to change the filter.
Glad I found your videos!
Good luck

Is there anywhere you recommend to get parts for a quad range transmission besides Deere? Thanks
@@rankinfarms The salvage yards like all state ag parts. They usually have good used parts

I'm about to install this seat in a 4230 and you're the only person who's given better direction than that paper did! Thank you for your service!
Thank you very much for the nice words. I know it sounds Goofy but I sincerely do enjoy when someone says that it helped them
I second this comment. I'm getting ready to do the same seat install and REALLY appreciate the time you took taking the video.
@black99z28 thank you.
Jon do you just work for yourself?..Only John Deere mechanics around here. Can;t get them to work on the old stuff
This tractor is for us. Otherwise, most of the repair videos are customer stuff
Do they not have any older mechanics?
@@jonstevensmaplegrovefarms3754 the older ones have completely retired. these young ones if they cant fix it with a computer they are lost. Lightening hit a tree next to a friends of mine john deere. That was 6 months ago and it has not been fixed yet and he is still making payments on it.
not many people want to work any more
Dab a little black paint on those seat nuts?
Ha, yep,
Would it ever be possible or ever been done to put a slower reverse gear in a quad range?
Not sure, A-1R is pretty slow.
In my 4230 it’s well over 3mph and too fast for blowing snow.
Yes. We ran into that a lot on the 4430. I put a 1000 to 540 adapter on. Then I could bring the engine down to 1100 or 1200 RPM but the snow blower would still be spinning fast.
Other times it's a snow got real deep that opening pass is miserable but once I got it opened up then I would only take a foot or two on the next pass.
What kind of seat is that?

I used to do a lot of those transmission & rear ends, so many I didn't need the book at all to set torque specs or preload and end play. I really enjoyed that kind of work back in the early 80's, I still like wrenching.
Nice.
I am a second guesser even if I know the spec I still use the book.
Cool!
thanks!
