Had this problem on my mk1 16v, wasn't the relay, had all the dash out, looking for a fault.
Couldn't find a fault, ended up jamming a wire in the fuel pump fuse and another in the 30amp permanently live fuse running through a toggle switch I installed in the dash, its run like that for at least 5 years no problem, wouldn't recommend running a 15amp circuit from a 30 amp supply ideally, but its held up for a very long time 🤙

Excellent video for sure on bypassing the fuel pump relay. Although I have to say there is an easier way to test the fuel pump relay for resistance with a multimeter and you will hear the relay clicking on and off as you do it.

nice work dude, got an issue on my 16v mk2 where the fuel pump is constantly running, so the opposite issue of yours, it should only buzz for like 2 seconds on ignition. have replaced the relay, but same issue. very odd

ive fixed these things for years and even raced them so for this particular fuel system is all about pressure so my old school hack was to add two fuel pumps wired inline to create a favorable pressure situation this way i drove an 65 sirocco for over 13 years between north Carolina and Michigan i put over a hundred thousand miles by my self in this car that im now selling

So did the pumps run or not when you put the contact on? Impressive that you were able to find another relay, in Belgium they are super expensive

@ProblemSolverGarage thanks for your reply! I bought a Golf cabrio mk1 with the same engine as yours I think (1.8 dx). Car haven't ran in 17 years. No fuel, no spark. Spark is ok now, but fuel seems to be a problem. I can only activate the pump by jumping the relay. You vids have been realy usefull/helpfully :)

Great videos 👍 I just got a 1990 Cabriolet that has sat for 18 years , it is a HUGE project. Do you have a video of pulling the fuel rail/ injectors ?

So I tried to bypass my fuel pump relay, and I did exactly what you did and I saw tiny but amount of spark between the fuse and my clamp but nothing coming from the pump. Would that mean the pump is for sure broken? And would it be the one in the tank or underneath the car?
Before my pump stopped working, for some reason it would stay on the whole time when on accessories, it would just continue priming.

I'm having the same problem in my Polo G40.

The first thing you definitely want to do is a visual inspection to see if any wires are broken or frayed and if they are, simply re splice them together.
If That's not the case then do a resistance check with your multi meter. If there is a High Resistance or one of those lines are broken, the chances are your fuel pump fuse would be blown, or fuel pump relay. Check those as well and replace as needed that should fix it.

Hi! so you do NOT need to JUMP Relay, [first]? HOW can you get Pump to Run WITHOUT Relay installed [?] No connection. 'new' Replaced UPSIDE DOWN *8{\* huh?
"Oil pressure" lol you're funny. try Electrical, and followed by others. .. Good Luck
'84 Scirocco would Die every now and then, leaving me stranded for a bit, always had Reading material to pass time ... 10 - 15 minutes later, it would start. .. then learned to test Relay by jumping, when happened. $41 [yrs ago] solved the problem.

At the fuel distributor that valve is called a frequency valve.
