Phra Dan (Bhante Dhammarakkhita, Bhikkhu) is a Theravada Buddhist Monk who lived in India from 2020, Thailand and now Sri Lanka. Born in Sussex, England in 1967. Educated by French Catholic Monks. A successful businessman in Estate Agency and Financial Services during the 1980's and 90's. Married, now divorced with 3 adult sons. 2000 marked change and travel including South Africa returning to the UK in 2003 to continue different work and business activities until 2012. Gradually materialistic values turned to renunciation, simplicity and meditation, living nomadically in an old Ford Transit van full time for 3 years. Van life and meditation led to Buddhism and a Thai Forest Tradition, Theravada Buddhist Monastery in the UK. During 2015 travelling the Buddhist Holy Sites of India, deep faith reinforced desire for Ordination. In 2020 after 5 years of intensive meditation practice between Thai Forest Monasteries in Thailand and England he was Ordained in India where he lived for 3 years until returning to Thailand in 2023 and now Sri Lanka.

Thank you for your time and awareness Bhante.
    My question is:
Can you speak to the benefits and or drawbacks of using a practice of choiceless awareness throughout the day versus a more directed mindfulness of a specific object such as the breath?
If the goal is liberation, what should I focus on? They feel distinct but connected, maybe one nested within the other.
    Thank you.🙏

Thank you Bhante, no question only comment. A dog trainer once taught me a valuable lesson. She said if the dog does something you dont like: dont scold it just turn his attention to something more fun. Eventually the dog will break the habit or if not you can control your dogs space. So it is with addiction. Addiction is not a desire but a belief. A belief that the drug or drink is needed to function. In all parts of life, it cannot be compartmentalized like a desire.

Nature does not seem to allow a vacuum. The problem in changing a belief system is a replacement is needed. Because addiction is selfishness to the extreme a good replacement behavior might be to go help someone else. Instead of a drink buy a homeless person sandwich, or mow your neighbors lawn, get involved with people in recovery. For me I needed actions to replace my belief system and my belief was booze helped me deal with my problems.

Thank you so much for talking about desire and no need for suppression. This is very helpful. Makes it easier to identify desires without having to put in the effort to suppress.

I have some questions. How many hours a day do you spend in meditation? Do you ever sit on a chair? You say you eat one meal a day, but for the rest of the day do you drink tea or coffee or just water? Thank you for any response

Hello, I read your comment and I want to clarify something.
Meditation is not an act we perform when we sit on a comfortable mattress or in a luxurious place, or when we take a certain posture. Meditation is our original nature. Meditation should be present throughout a person's entire life. Walk in meditation, sit in meditation, eat watermelon in meditation, and watch the birds in meditation. Meditation is part of our human essence and should be present throughout our day, not just tied to specific times. Many people see meditation as a temporary routine they perform, and some see it as a timed punishment they eagerly await to end. Meditation and mindfulness are our keys to seeing the world in its pure original form.
Have a good day, I wish you success and good health.
      Best regards 🤍🙏🏻
