- Tight hamstrings can be really frustrating, but there's a better option than doing endless hamstring stretches, if you want to treat the real underlying cause and make the hamstring tightness go away.

ABOUT ME: I'm James Dunne, a runner, sports rehabilitation therapist (similar to physical therapist) and coach based in the UK (Norwich and London).
Since 2007 I've been working with athletes focusing specifically on helping distance runners and triathletes overcome injury and improve performance through developing their individual running technique.
Running biomechanics and physical therapy are real passions of mine. I love to help runners run strong and stay injury free.

This is one of the most underrated UA-cam channels. As a runner, I have resorted to it so many times...
Thanks for the support 🙏
This is gold. You are going to put Physiotherapists out of work.
I just tested my 'tight hamstings' and they aren't tight at all. *mind blown*
Yes! This is the content I come here for. Great video!
Brilliant information. Spot on James. Thank you.
This is bang on. My core is terrible, gained weight in the belly, been running in an anterior tilt position. My left hammy has been causing me so many issues. Thanks James. From you #1 fan
Thanks. It's good to revisit topics previously discussed with fresh explanations. This vid comes at the right time as a reminder to the ways to lessen my LBP which flared again last week .
Thanks a lot for these useful information 🙏
You're welcome! Hope the info helps.
I so needed this video 6 months ago. I’ve had lots of calf and/or hamstring (located) pain from my sciatic nerve. Worked through it after lots of reading and research and flossing is key to being able to do speed work without causing days of cramps in my calves.
Really glad to hear you managed to come to the same conclusion! Game changer hey?!
Loved this episode!!! Thanks James!
Thanks. Hope it helps!
Great content. Took me about 4 years to figure this out myself after countless ways of trying to fix my running gait. Now doing both the stretching and the exact hamstring exercises you suggested. :)
This is incredible. My hamstring discomfort has been building through my plan, as it does.
I’d say I was at 6.5/10 last night.
Did 20 “flosses” per side and the pain dropped to 1.5. Went out on my training run and beat my 400m, 1K, 2K, 1 mile, 2 mile, 5K & 10K pb’s!
I’ve done 20 more last night and 20 this morning. Now my hamstrings are almost invisible to me, seriously insane.
Yes!! That’s great news. So pleased it helped 🏃🏻♂️💨
The revamp is great James. Best of luck with it. 💪💪
Thanks, Martin! I really appreciate the support.
In a word ... brilliant!!
The information provided in this video is incredible, and I canNOT wait to try this and discover - first- it is truly a tight hamstring that has been hindering me for years and then taking real steps to rectify whatever the problem is.
brilliant information,as usual,
Thank you, Stuart!
Linked from your email. Great as always, thank you
Thanks! Glad you liked it 😃 I appreciate the support.
I subscribe man
Love the info ... Something to keep in mind
Can u do a video on addresing pain in the plantar fascia
When I do my interval or tempo runs ... My fascia under my foot gets sensitive .. when I roll massage it with a ball the next day I can feel a little pain across the fascia .. ATM I don't get any pain when I got up on morning from my bed when it's cold and inactive ... But the pain will eventually get worse and hinder my training .. .
( When I do my long runs aka half marathon distance, my fascia does be good ... No pain when I roll massage with a cricket hard ball. I can confirm this on 4 occasions where I had 4 long runs and had the same outcome as stated just before. is just the higher intensity runs inflame it . I can also confirm it more than 2 times as well)
P.s.
I run with tape under my foot to support my fascia ... So the tempo or interval runs don't hurt my fascia ... But I don't know how long that's gonna last for
Would really appreciate a feedback from u. I have a half marathon in August in my country
Thanks bro
Hip strengthening workout plzz
So, in the first position, I can't straighten my knee. Nowhere close. And I never could. Same with other exercises that require straightening one leg at a right angle to the torso. Is that just my anatomy, or is there work I can do to increase my range of motion?
I always thought I had tight hamstrings, but the discomfort goes the instant I un-hunch, fascinating!
🤯 Crazy right?! You’re not alone, believe me.
My physical therapist has determined that my chronically tight hamstrings are result of slightly weaker quadriceps. I essentially went there because of a knee leg fall injury. so the core of therapy is stretching the hamstrings, but strengthening the quads. we are using isometric holds as well as elastic bands. I was told to do sets of different types of movements like this twice a day. hi periodically go to the gym to use iso tonic exercise machines also with lightweight.
Had my share of hamstring injuries 😫 Quite simply there's NO guarantee that one will not succumb to injury, especially if track (speed) repetitions are part of one's training schedule.
Agreed. After all, strength and mobility are only part of the puzzle. You can have all that nailed down, but if you then get your training volume, frequency and/or intensity wrong, you’ll still likely end up broken!
My hamstring pain is gone, thank you alots
i recieved an e mail....good contents👍
If I do the slump test it’s so tight and painful and then nothing when I sit up. I’ve had pain in the high hamstring for over a year. Could it be HHT as well as nerve tension? It’s a right pain in the ……
I’d want to take a look at piriformis syndrome if you’re getting pain in that region that then behaves like that in a slump test.
@@JamesDunne it shows all the signs of this. If I do a seated figure 4 type stretch it does feel like it relieves it but then when I go back to stretch it again it’s completely locked up again. Tried a lot of strengthening but no joy. Glute adhesion maybe 🤔🤷♂️🤷♂️🤷♂️
Are you doing any rehab courses at the moment?
Just to really confuse things. If I go out on an easy pace run the hamstrings feel tight and pain in the HHT area. If I accelerate or do a tempo run it feels a lot better
After the change from heel to mid foot landing, my calves and ankles are seems to be tighter. I hope times will heal. 😇
I get a bit concerned about doing more harm than good (even damage) when exercising hamstrings. 👍
I feel hamstring curls from a supine position with a Fit Ball would be better at strengthening the hamstrings vs the isometric exercise shown at the end of the video. Cheers!
Bit of an apples and oranges comparison tho. Have you tried this one? Personally I find people compensating way too readily when trying to do the ball curl, and missing the mark in terms of actually targeting the hams properly. This allows for various easy tweaks to hit the individual hamstring muscles in different ranges. Will do a video to properly show the targeted tweaks, in due course. Added to list!
Terrific content. Thank you. If I might make a small suggestion: Wearing all dark clothes makes it a little hard to see your demos/explanations, a mid / lighter coloured top might articulate your limbs better and make for clearer illustrations. Not a complaint, just a thought and again: huge thumbs up to the content / format.
Thank you, Michael. That’s a really good idea. Noted!
👍👍👍
Could stretching the hamstring lead to hamstring tendonopathy
Have you thought in adding spanish subtitles?. That would be amazing for spanish speaking runners. For me this is one of the Best runners Channels which people who dont Know English are missing 😢
Done! Can you check them please? 🤣
