Valve clearances out of tolerance can cause starting problems. Do a compression check and go from there. The beauty of the old xj600 is it really is a very easy bike to work on. Good luck
100% agree! It's very simple to work on! And there are still lots of parts available and cheap too! For example : I have seen quite a few used running engines for less than 200 Euro! Or even full bikes for less than 300!! Sometimes the owners just want to get rid of them because they are not valuable bikes.
@@FreeMilesMC ive had starting issues with mine before, find a wireing diagram and check for any wireing issues, i had a starter wire loose going to my main relay box. also check the starter circuit, unlike moden bikes theres no real ECU so everything is simple to fix my headlights wernt working once because the plug had fallern of the back of the bulb it can be really simple dumb stuff
Dude that old lady is not even close to be dead, just put it asside for a while, consider it as a side project. It is not about the money,it is about love and passion.
Dear old granny Yam, from the sand of Marocco to the ice of Iceland. Thank you for all those great trips you shared with us. You prooved the world that you dont need much money to live a great adventure ands its more about the mentality and will than about the equipment or motorcycle.Hope you get fixed soon. Very curious to discover the new bike 😉🤙
So excited to see your new bike!!! What you have done with the XJ is absolutely outstanding! Most GS's and AfricaTwin's out there have never seen what your Yam have already seen! You are truly the "real deal" man! - great, love it!
I just had my xj600 fixed (also didn't want to start up) and it was a problem with the crankshaft sensor. It should be cheap and maybe worth looking into
Took this off an XJ600 forum that was having the same issue as you. ""Well either the pump is faulty, or the electrics are faulty. There isn't much to the system in terms of electronics. The fuel pump relay supplies power to the pump when the ignition is turned on. This is a constant feed (usually). The pump is a low pressure unit with a pressure sensor built in. If the pressure in the line is below x, it pumps. If the pressure is above x, it doesn't pump. To test the pump: 1. Disconnect the pump outlet from the carbs, put it into a container. 2. Switch on the ignition. It should pump, and keep pumping. 3. Put your thumb over the end of the line and hold it there. After a little build up of pressure, it should stop pumping. 4. Take your thumb off the end of the line. It should pump again. 5. Repeat steps 3&4 until you're happy that it works. I would probably do this test off a separate power supply - like a 12v battery wired direct to the pump, seeing as the wiring is also suspect. If the pump behaves properly running off a battery, then the wiring is the next place to look. 1. Find a wiring diagram. Get familiar. There will be two main areas to look at. The feed from the main wiring loom to the pump relay, and the wiring from the relay to the pump. 2. Find the earthing points. The wiring to the relay probably uses a main frame earth shared with lots of other circuits. Even so, find it and clean it up. 3. The pump may have its own earth point. If this is heavily corroded, or the wire looks knackered, clean up the earth and/or replace the knackered wire. 4. If all of the earthing side looks fine, then look at the live side. You could have an internal break (pain in the arse, the wire looks fine but is broken inside the insulation), but if you are lucky you're find a wire which has chafed against something and is shorting out. Replace the offending section of wire. 5. If all of the earths look fine, and the wiring looks fine, and the relay is new, I would just replace the wires feeding the pump and see if that fixes it. So that's the live side to and from the relay, and the earth side from the pump. Finally - make sure you know what voltage the pump is meant to have before you start fiddling with it. I have come across 9v fuel pumps on scooters before. I discovered it was a 9v pump after I put 12v across it and smoke came out. Also, if all of this fails, it may work perfectly well on a gravity feed. A fuel pump on a carbed bike should only really be necessary when the fuel level in the tank is at or below the fuel level in the float bowls. This is only likely to be the last litre or two of reserve.""
In summer, I did my motorbike license after almost 20 years of driving cars in Germany. When it came to get my first bike, I explicitly went for a easy to work on, old bike with carbs. Wonder what you will get as a replacement for your XJ600. I was looking for a 600 N and some other bikes, but ultimately ended up getting a SevenFifty from 1995. It's an awesome, chunky lady.
It’s probably something simple, check the needles for wear and if there is debris in the fuel system. Just keep going back to it when you get stuck, you done need to be a mechanic just meticulous with problem solving. I’m glad you are keeping it as they are well made machines with previous generations behind them. Good luck with your new machine 🤘
R.I.P Diversion, what a fantastic budget trip its been, ive enjoyed all of your videos so fucking much!! You're the only German i would allow in my home lol, so please, if you are ever in tiny belgium and need a place to stay i have a fantastic place in Gent, you are most welcome to spend the night!
Thank you for the kind invitation. I’ve been through Belgium several times, but I rarely left the highway. Maybe I will need some place on the way back from my next trip. It depends on the route, and the other stops I will have to make. 🙏😎
I had a feeling Iceland was this bike's last journey... Sad to see! I saw this exact motorcycle once a few weeks back and I was almost starstruck because of this channel. Can't wait to see what's the next bike!
Hey ;) Now, this is not useful for you, but this kind of problem can be inside the tank, like dust ant rust, they come inside the carburator and clong everything. You clean, work, and after a while, clong again ;) Ride safe ;)

Is there a spark? The coils (zundspülen) could be tired and might just need replacing. They’re wear & tear (Verschleißteile) items . Hopefully enough there’s fuel getting through , check the fuel-filter - maybe it’s blocked however, this is combined with having a clean tank without any sediment at the bottom. Be kinda cool to see that sweet red Xj600 back on the road. Best greetings from Düsseldorf 😉
You are right. There are also multiple different approaches when it comes for cheap bikes, because some cheap bikes at the end of the day get back at you with repair costs
Ich hoffe, Du hast Dir eine Suzuki V-Strom 650 der älteren Generation ab 2004 bis 2010 geschossen! @emveezee I also think that at some point in the future wen my working on bikes knowledge is better I will do more stuff like that with different super cheap bikes. It just really makes for good videos
I love what you're doing on that XJ, keep it up don't ever let your mechanical skills hold you back you and that bike will go everywhere you want to go if you put your mind to it you proved that so far!!!!! And also thank you for showing me the true capabilities of the XJ I have a big off-road trip plan soon inspired by all of your trips

Yeah, most likely this. Ignition coils and starter motor could also be worth to check out, considering the mud pit episode in Iceland :D
