I have brain cancer and came to add something to my musical house. We’ll have everything but drums. My dad went to high school with Michael McDonald, but Warren G and Nate Dogg definitely made this their own. I’ll keep you posted.
I’m 61, had a keyboard for a couple of years and just worked my way through the first part, it’s rough, but I do enjoyed that, Thank You so much for putting this up, I may never play it like Michael or you, but I think with a ton of work I can get where someone could recognize it, maybe Thank You for sharing your talent to play and teach!
I just bought a stage piano, and this song is one of the motivations. Thanks for great lesson. Love that you name the chords instead of just showing the shape or pattern. Helps for we newbies to learn music. You bet I subscribed man. Thanks again.
Brother, when you refer to the "white" keys at 5:40, you don't have to be apologetic. White keys are white keys, black keys are black keys. They have lived together on the keyboard since the 18th century - sometimes harmonious and sometimes dissonant. Altogether they create works of art. As should we. I gotta agree with you that McDonald has soul pipes, as good as Pete Riviera from Rare Earth or Terry Kath from early Chicago.
That's the problem with these "politically correct" movement from socialism... ...even the piano needs to be described for some full of fear to be a rude person...
The music was written by Jerry Leiber and Mike Stoller. They had a string of hits, one of their most famous was "Hound Dog". This arrangement, suits Michael McDonald's voice beautifully. For years I have wanted to learn the chords, and in particular the very distinctive progression in the chorus.
I adapted this for guitar. It was relatively easy; 1st time I'm trying out the song. Give me a week, I'll have it down. There are some chords I hear in the "never be the same again" part, some augmenteds that translate easier for piano. I'll figure out all these progressions in time. Thank you very much for your lesson. Much appreciated.
Great tutorial. If you ever doubt your teaching style-- like how you repeat things or slow things down sometimes-- don't. This was really helpful. I'd personally find it nice if you'd do more arpeggios when demonstrating the chords. Those stick in my head when attempting to break down the chords and really hear their components. This was the first of your videos I've ever come across. Can't wait to watch more.
Thank you J Conrad! I have over 100 tutorials available on my channel and over 80 tutorials that are only available via my Patreon Page! Here's a link if you're interested in supporting me on Patreon. www.patreon.com/houseofjaz Thanks again!!
Great tutorial, BTW, Abm7b5 is 1 note different then Ab Diminished 7th. The later having a double flat 7 (Gbb or F). The minor 7 flat 5 has a minor 7th (F#).
Its me again friends, and I'm back getting some more great tutorials from the house of jazz. As always awesome work, my family is impressed before I've completely learned the song thank you so much!
Mr. houseofjaz that was on point let me know when I can make another request you seem a little busy right now your putting out mad material sir! thanks you already who this is lol
Actually, I'm down to three (already paid) tutorials left to do with one of those maybe getting done now because it sounds pretty easy. That will take me down to two. Put your request in now if you can. It's a good time to do so right now. Thanks for all your Support!!
Love your bass intro with that off beat rhythm, badass. That's so true, great tune, great chords, thanks, but i was singing this in my head then looked it up and saw he's a white guy! I will say, Regulate makes the tune all that much cooler--I guess too since I was too young for the original, Regulate gives it context for my age even though the two songs are completely different lyrics. i will stop rambling now.
Nice lesson. Is it fair to just call the C/D chord ("C over D" chord) in the B section a D dominant chord (D11 or D9)...since it's a II-V-I in G major. Just from this guitar players perspective. Thanks again for the great tutorial.
I don't know how to play guitar at all. I just call them out from a keyboard player's perspective. I tend t play C/D sometimes as a Am7/D. It can also be called a D7 (sus2) (sus4). I don't know, whatever works for you I guess LOL!
houseofjaz appreciate the reply. Trust me, I'm self taught so I'll go with your naming over mine. But I guess the sus2/sus4 is where I'm getting the 9/11 from. Whenever I want to really learn a song I go to a keyboard lesson. So many guitarists don't have the chord knowledge. Thanks again.
as a self taught keyboard player who started on drums and melodic percussion (vibes, chimes, xylophone, etc. and still can't read bass clef), I've noticed guitarists tend to speak a different language. They think in terms more of root notes and dominants and the sus 2 sus 4, slash chord stuff. After the Beatles and everybody got a guitar for Christmas, we have to speak their language. : )

You, sir, are a natural teacher. I appreciate your patient, repetitive approach.
When michael mcdonald sings even stevie wonder lifts his glasses
When Michael Macdonald sings even Beethoven listens
Even Hellen Keller says “Whoa”. 💯
I love the way you teach, so easy to get it right. You're so patient!
This is how to do a tutorial.... so cool to go nice and slow, explain the chords/notes,demonstrate and repeat. Chapeau.

Can you please do a piano tutorial on Michael McDonald’s song “Peace”. I’m having a hard time putting the cords together. Thank you so much
I suggest you change Bm7/F# into a F#m7 for the intro and verses...
I had the sheet music for this piece and based 98% of this tutorial from the sheet music.
GREAT TEACHING METHOD
Thank You Harold! 🎹😎👍
Just curious what keyboard you are using. Nice Rhodes sound. Stock?
Well done, sir!
Thank You Sir! 😎👍

What virtual keyboard are you using? (red keys)
And are you editing that piano over the live video or are you using OBS live?
Hey. Great tutorial! How do you get the image of the keyboard at the top of the screen? Thanks

Please do "Real Love" by the Doobie Brothers/ Michael McDonald.
Hello, Excellent tutorial as always. I have a question, what software are you using to display the notes on the screen?
BOB James's Fourplay next?
nice good stuff this was helpfull
lovely!
I sent $3 via PayPal and haven’t gotten the chord sheet.
Hi Richard. I sent you $20 for the chord sheet. :-) Nice work.
Thank you very much...
May I suggest using fourths rather than thirds during the intro.
Whatever works Tom!

Dude said he got some drops of something in him lol
Good game
hi there. jsut paid the 3 dollars to your paypal account, pls send me the chord sheet please
thx
lol..just move down to the very next white key.. not being prejudiced or anything.
Hi Lovely Day! Glad you enjoyed the tutorial & my corny jokes. 😁
Great job brother! You messed up the lyrics tho 😂😂😂😂
"Dim 7" and "min 7 b5" are not the same. In the min 7 b5, the 7 is dominant (b), in the dim 7, the 7 is double flat (bb).
Ever heard of half diminished chords...also known as minor7 flat 5?
houseofjaz Yes, I have heard of half diminished chords, but I believe you said dim 7, which is not the same. If I'm wrong, I apologize.
Sorry but try to slow down going to the progression and hold the notes a little bit longer please
regulatoooors
racism is played out, brother man.
To fast
Pause and rewind video.
houseofjaz (The Piano Tutorial Man!) I will thank
Did you say, "not being prejudiced of anything??" - That a level of ignorance beyond. I'm out bro.
How dare you refer to a key as "white" sir. So prejudiced
