Insane Hail Storm (Measured 2.5" Hailstone) Pummels Fountain, Colorado Springs 6/13/18 (Unedited)

  • I started filming, just after I checked weather.com's radar...seeing that it was about to get rough. I had no idea. Having lived here in Fountain, Colorado (Cross Creek Community) for almost 13 years, this is notably more severe than anytime before. The vid is unedited, but it's worth the wait...as it gets intense. Well, understood if you don't to watch the whole thing...some walking through my dark house. Can browse to 21:30 to check out the measuring of one sizable hailstone though.
    After it passed, I checked my renters' cars, and they were all toast...major hail damage to the hoods and windshields looked like they'd taken gunfire.

    FYI...I didn't post this vid for anyone to promote their company. Don't take it personally, but all comments from any roofing or other company (i.e. body shop, windshield replacement) will be removed.

    I’ve never been to your area. Is it normal to have this type of storm in CO? I grew up in MO and we had some occasional bad storms but we knew when everything started looking “greenish” we knew we were in for a bad storm. If hail started, it meant a tornado was in the area somewhere! The city “warning siren” would sound and we would just take cover in the basement at home or if at school, the inner hallways sitting again the walls with our hands clasped over our heads until it passed. (Usually pretty quickly) We were luckier back then, hail about the size of a dime, rarely, and had no tornadoes or power outages. Since then I’ve lived in many States and have experienced the “local” weather, and it “seems” to be getting weirder and much more severe! (This is when we’d listen to the older residents and their experiences that they had lived through there in their lifetime) The weather is getting more weird and severe more often for sure, but what can we do? Take videos of it like you did I guess, and be glad a tornado didn’t follow that big ass hail storm!!! Who knows what the future will bring? Good job with your video. You just let us experience it with you without a lot of “chitchat”! I think you were as shocked and concerned as any normal person would be. Very realistic . Thanks for the realism and good luck out there in CO 👍🏻🍀

      No, definitely not normal. I've been here almost 13 years and haven't experienced anything like that in Fountain. I was a roofing estimator a few years back, and was called most often to do estimates at the North end of town. It seemed 15 miles North made all the difference. About a year ago, about 10 miles north got hit with some bad hail, standing cars because their windshields were so severely damaged, people couldn't see out of them (I saw them on the side of the road).
      But I've heard this was the worst in 20 years for this area. I drove a mile or so South of my house and the damage was even worse...saw several windshields completely caved in, and 1/2 a dozen houses with tarps over their roofs. One house on the next block over to mine had has a window boarded up, so that window obviously shattered.
      Fortunately, this region is not tornado country...they are exceedingly rare. And small and brief if they are spotted. I've never seen one.

    a few years ago here in Englewood we had a 3am storm roll through with hail and flooding rain, it shattered outdoor light fixtures, shredded trees and shrubs, over flowed the pond in the back yard, hit so hard it went through the cover on the grille and shattered the thermostat. even now a piece of shattered glass will wash up through the patio tile sand grout. Hail is Hideous!

      I'm 53, and that was a first in my life. I walked out to what almost looked like a mini-hurricane, with what you said...shredded tree branches and leaves everywhere...it broke apart the plastic patio chair, took chips out of the deck, left holes in several window screens. I haven't inspected my roof, but having been an estimator for a roofing company in the past, there's no doubt it's been seriously damaged. My street was swarming today with roofing companies (and I quickly learned to not pick up the phone), reps walking door to door, and lawn signs posted by roofing companies. And there's bits of roof grains on my driveway and deck.
      I'm not discounting the far more immense damage a hurricane can do. I was born and raised in earthquake country (So. Cal.). The Great Plains has tornados (technically, we can get them here, but I researched it before I moved, and only 9 people have been killed by them in CO history, if I remember correctly). The East Coast and South has hurricanes. Well, I suppose we're lucky...as bad as these hail storms are, they're not lethal like the other wraths of Mother Nature in other regions. Nevertheless, this is the first time in my life she has caused notable monetary damage to my property.

    That storm last night messed up my bmw. I am 🤢 to my stomach right now. Thank god i have full coverage on my 15 year old Bmw. I was actually very lucky compared to others. We only has 1 inch hail at my house. But a 1/4 mile south it got huge. I feel bad for those that don't have the insurance coverage that i do. My car will get fixed. Others won't be as lucky I'm afraid. Keep full coverage in colorado. Stay safe out there today. Supposed to happen again possibly today.

    It is supposed to be bad in Colorado this year again. I will do my best to post as much damge as possible. After the first hail storm in fountain we got new Windows siding roof and we got rid of our sky light in the main bathroom. Our cars were completely totaled but we are good friends with the owner of our insurance company so they fixed our cars back to practically brand new for only 50$. We are preparred more than ever for this hail season!

    Can you believe that six years ago on that same day, a hail storm similar to this one hit the Dallas/Lakewood, Texas area! The lightning wasn't nearly as bad as this was, though. Also, what breed/s of dogs are they? Did they become more afraid of thunderstorms, especially with hail like that?

I once found myself in my boxers in the middle of the street at 5 am after being bounced out of bed from an earthquake in Pacific Beach in the early '90s. How thick was the glass of your windows? I never heard one window of your house break. So, were they intact?

    • @Stiffler1109
      @Stiffler1109  5 років тому

      About 10 years ago, in the dead of winter (was probably 20 degrees that night), I misplaced my keys and locked myself out of the house. Freezing, and knowing I had a back-up sliding glass door (long story, but a smudge on the inside of the double-pane glass in the original had the home builder give me a replacement), had me decide to smash the glass and get in. I figured it would be easy to break the glass and initially threw a 6"x6" cement paver at it. After several attempts using my best overhand pitching technique, I realized the glass was extremely tough. It took a 53 lb retaining wall cement block to do it, and I think even then it took several attempts. Needless to say, I couldn't believe how strong that glass was. It might be stronger because of the air tight seal between the two glass panes. The air pocket might serve as a cushion of sorts, disallowing the window to flex.
      All the windows are made the same as the door, so I'm sure they're similarly strong. A few of the screens got holes in them, so the hail definitely hit the backside of the house. Considering my experience with a direct hit from far heavier cement objects and knowing that the hailstones were coming in at an angle, though I heard them loud enough, I wasn't concerned about them breaking.
      At least a couple of my neighbors weren't as fortunate. I saw tarps or cardboard where windows once were in the days after the storm. I'm assuming they had a lower quality or single pane windows. The quality of glass can make all the difference. My boy and I drove around a couple days after and some cars' windshields were literally smashed in, as in drooping or had fallen into the car. I have a '98 Chevy 3500HD truck and while the windshield did crack, their only isolated single cracks, and I can still easily see out. I think that windshield's glass might be thicker than other cars. With those big trucks, they're not worried about weight savings. They know it's heavy, could possibly be driving in harsh weather (it's a tow truck) and maybe they have a thicker glass for such vehicles. Just a guess...don't know.

      @@TheSouthernytIRL Oh yeah. I've been here over 13 years (hometown San Diego), and besides the fact it snows here, rains in the summer, hail is relatively common, the other notable difference are the striking (pun intended) lightning storms. I've been here 25% of my life, but I bet I've tripled the amount of lightning I've seen since I moved here. And much closer too. A few years back, a bolt hit the creek about 80 ft from the rear of the house. Sitting at my desk in my bedroom, I got shocked good from the dispersing energy two stories up.
      FYI... maybe a native Coloradoan would know what CGs are. I Googled CGS, and found a list of 107 acronyms on The Free Dictionary .com and cloud-ground strikes wasn't one of them. You'll be happy to know that Come Get Some and Catholic Guilt Syndrome did make the list however.

      After all my yammering in my first reply, I forgot to say yes agreed...there were some awesome lightning strikes. As long as they're not shocking me, dig the lightning storms. Crazy though when the bolts hit so close they sound like a scud missile hitting the next door neighbor's house. Don't know from experience, but it sound like a huge bomb right outside, and nothing like traditional Thunder. Mother Nature...she definitely will remind us who's boss on occasion. There is another time a few years back that a bolt hit the creek while I was in the backyard. Didn't get shocked, but that thunderclap might have been the loudest thing I've ever heard in my life. I don't scare easy, but suffice it to say I bolted inside the house with zero delay.

    your one of the reasons insurance goes up wether you paid yours or not

    • @Stiffler1109
      @Stiffler1109  5 років тому

      Yep. Same with home owner's insurance when we had those fires that leveled a few hundred homes in other regions of Colorado. Even though we're not in a high risk area here for fires, my insurance went up about $500/year the next year. We all get to help the insurance companies recoop the money they have to pay out to have all those homes rebuilt.
      And actually, it's gone down again since the fires a few years ago. And I'm one of the few that doesn't have hail coverage on the roof. Virtually everyone in my neighborhood had their roof replaced except me. The reason insurance goes up is because of abuse of the system. I used to be an estimator. I abided my training and recommended roof replacement when the criteria was met, which of course was paid by insurance. And that obvious drives insurance premiums up.
      But despite 3 inch size hailstones, my roof isn't leaking. I'm thinking it doesn't need to be replaced if it's not leaking. And if it was to leak, there's always Flex Seal. The insurance world is messed up, whether it be homeowner's or medical. Replacing my roof would cost me or insurance about $15K...even though it's not leaking. Makes no sense. Ever heard of the saying, "If it's not broke, don't fix it"?
      So actually, while I'm confused by what you said, I'd say I'm probably one of the reasons insurance may drop. I'm the perfect customer for insurance companies. I still pay them a fair amount of money, but don't have hail coverage. So that means they're guaranteed to have a customer that won't abuse the system. The probability of them just collecting my money for many years and never having to pay anything out for my house is exceedingly high. Unless the house gets struck by lightning, which is obviously relatively rare or gets leveled by a tornado or leveled in a fire, I'll just be giving them lots of money for the next few decades until I die. I'm thinking virtually everyone's roof in my neighborhood was replaced at a cost of about $15K, which is probably about a decade's worth on the average of insurance payments for them to break even.
      Not me man...I may be one of
