- Here is "Cage", taken from their Tour14 Psychonnect -Mode Of “Gauze”?-. It won in the poll against "Yurameki", which was to decide the order I'm going to do the songs in. This one has a few annotations, so take a look!
Translation by me.
Annotations:
"You're my last mother" - The lyrics have "mother" in English throughout the song, but I didn't use italics because he changes it to "mama" throughout.
"Seeing me repulsed" - Just to clarify, the one who is repulsed is "me".
"The jarring sound of skin is painful" - The word used for "skin" usually refers more to the skin of animals, gives off a rougher impression.
"The abuse when I was little - Even now I never want to forget it" - Without looking at the lyrics, sound-wise, this line sounds like it could also mean "Even now I can't forget it and it hurts".
"Why don't I have a mother?" - Or "Why isn't my mother here?".
"Please recognize the kindness one day - Inside the 'cradle' that is your holy mother" - These two lines seem to have a shift in perspective, as this sounds more like something the woman/women our protagonist meets tell him; asking him to recognize what true maternal love means - definitely not abuse.
Also, the lyrics say "holy mother" (聖母), but Kyo sings it just as "mother".
"Because of my grief - I can't see ahead" - As in, "I can't see what's in front of me", "I can't see the future".
"If this kindness is going to dry up - [...]" - Kyo changed this entire verse in this performance. I did this part by ear, and later found that a native speaker had done the same, which helped me confirm and re-evaluate some parts: ameblo.jp/hyt1...

Same! I had a friend lend me a CD when I was in 8th grade with a bunch of visual-kei bands on it and this was on it. Instantly fell in love and have been a fan ever since. I'm 32 now and can't imagine my life never having discovered this band.

I just love how this and most of their songs leave so much room for personal interpretations
A classic. Also has my favorite bass solos of Toshiya.
This bass line made my friend pick up learning the bass when we were kids. Shinya is also the reason I picked up drumming.
This song becomes so much better once you understand what he is saying.

@@Patuffson yeah true but I do feel like their lyrics were different then other bands in the visual kei scene. More darker and experimental ylu could say. So it was always there just needed that push
@@itzlizpy Visual Kei is not limited by sound or lyrics, I would say it's rather about the whole vibe. Look at Malice Mizer, they didn't fit at all when it comes to sound yet they were definitely Visual kei.
@@itzlizpy VK has nothing to do with the themes bands approach. It's all in the aesthetics and Dir En Grey definitely were (and are in some ways, when it comes to Kyo at least) visual kei.
It was the era I was introduced to them. I’ve never looked back since! One of the only bands still having all the same members and putting out amazing music 🫶🏻

Native JP speaker here who HATES when people act like knowing one word in *my native language* makes them superior (and also gives them better jobs) and I wouldn't be afraid to rip apart a poseur, so it's legit when I say *this translation is excellent.*
Only ONE problem with the subs, and that's just visibility/legibility since most of us are on our phones nowadays. I had to stop trying to read after 忘れずにいたい's translation. I rec making the letters bigger and fatter. The white text over black shadow was a good call. Actually the white text/black BG of US captions is my favourite, tbh.

What does Kyo mean by "you're my last mother"? I've wondered this since 2005
maybe "worst", I guess
I read one interpretation by a Japanese fan that made sense to me and helped me see the bigger picture of the song.
To make a long story short, she interpreted that the protagonist only finds pleasure in abuse and feels love only through abuse. He probably feels that way because of childhood trauma, caused by his birth mother (his "first" mother) and he now seeks out that experience with other women (like the one in the song, his "last" mother). But those women seem to see the pathology behind that and don't fully give him the abuse he desires, which is why he ends up destroying (killing?) them, which might allude to the fate his real mother suffered.
Keep in mind that this is only one person’s interpretation that I found insightful.

@@kayachanneru I never knew the English lyrics for this song until now and as I read them over and over I landed in this exact interpretation. Perhaps it's too conveniently interpreted as it's a quite common psychological phenomena. A distorted view of a mother-figure seem to be a theme in a few early songs though... Welp
