Captioned - Helen Keller Speaks Out

- Опубліковано 29 сер 2016
- Year - 1955. Blind and deaf writer and social activist, Helen Keller explains that her greatest disappointment in life, is that she cannot speak normally. TRANSCRIPT: " In this room sits a remarkable woman. She's Miss. Helen Keller. She does not see the room, or the book she's reading. She sees nothing. She doesn't hear the rustling of the curtains behind her. She is deaf. Deaf and blind. But if you enter a room, she will know it. Your lightest foot-fall will tell her you are coming. It will even tell her who you are, if she knows you, as she knows her old friend Polly Thomson. Polly has been with Helen Forty years. For half of these, she has been Helen's only companion. Helen's eyes and ears upon the world. She talks to Helen with a finger system in which each letter has a sign. Like this. Reaching out beyond her dark and silent night, Helen depends most on touch. Two other senses remain. there is taste and there is smell. Scent, the scent of objects and places and people tells Helen much that we learn with eyes and ears. But her hand is her chief link with the outer world, with Polly, with Anne the part-time helper. With everyone she encounters. With her hand she reads Anne's lips. She answers with her voice. It is an un-natural voice, and is her great sorrow. For all her years of effort, Helen has never learned to speak clearly. This isn't strange, for since she was a baby she hasn't heard a word spoken or seen lips forming one. But let Helen, with Polly's help, tell you. (Helen speaking): " It is not blindness or deafness that bring me my darkest hours. It is the acute disappointment in not being able to speak normally. Longingly, I feel how much more good I may have done, if only I had acquired normal speech. But out of this sorrowful experience, I understand more clearly all human striving, wanted ambitions, and infinite capacity of hope."

When Hellen Keller died in 1968, I was enrolled in Istanbul Law School as a Kurdish youth. I wish I had met her in her youth; I would donate my two eyes to her to see well, I would donate my two ears to her to hear well, I would donate my only tongue to her to speak well. I am sure that humanity will go further then. Because the eyes that still see could not see as clearly as she did; hearing ears could not hear as clearly as she did and speaking thangs could not speak as clearly as she did. She was the common value and common honor of humanity. As a Kurdish-American, I bag God’s mercy for her.Have your eternal rest dear Hellen Keller🍀❤️🌺❤️🌼❤️
How sad, Helen's longing to be able to speak normally in order to do more good but through this sadness she has a greater understanding of the human condition and the infinite capacity of hope!! A very inspiring video my friend ... thank you so much for sharing .... warm regards, Lorraine :)) #89
When you think about the fact that she spent decades just trying to find ways to communicate with her fellow human beings, our everyday problems seem quite insignificant by comparison.
Considering she was deafblind, it's amazing she could talk coherently at all. I understood about 80% of what she said without subtitles or the other lady saying it.
She was an amazing intelligent woman. I couldn't imagine learning the things she did...Thanks for sharing this with us. Thumbs up 31. Have a wonderful weekend. 💜 Ashley 💜

Such a remarkable remarkable woman. A woman who never let her disability makes her miserable. But kudos to those who really put their time, effort and perseverance in teaching her and guiding her. You are as great as Helen, too.. Thanks so much for this very inspirational video.

Hello my dear Edward.
Thanks for stopping by. It's always a pleasure to see you here. Yes... I think it's a rather touching video also. Although I suspect it may make some people feel a bit uncomfortable or sorry for Helen K. But they really shouldn't. She did the very best with what she had to work with. If we all did that, I think it would be an interesting world. Warm wishes!
Yesss, I plenty agree with you... She did all what one can do to pursue her ideals, and commitments with us, the poor blind guys!!!! Cheers, Eddy.
I think this lady is the most amazing person in the world...but I thought it was Ann Sullivan that taught Helen everything that she knew??? I have never heard of this Polly lady 😯
Yes, she taught her everything, but she died long before Hellen, so i think Polly remplaced Anne has her companion and guide
Patricia Martin it was ann

Cool videos
She actually had achieved a very good voice considering the severe limitations. After my carreer of working with developmental speech and language children I think Helen was excellent :)) Terrific film Helen, *
Greetings to you from Berlin ,
Helena :))
Hi Helena.
Yes...she speaks better than one might expect...under the circumstances. But actually she didn't become blind and deaf until the age of 19 months...due to scarlet fever. So I think she had an advantage over someone who was born that way. I suspect she may had some residual memory of speech, even if she wasn't actually aware of it. Interesting career choice. Perhaps you heard of Helen Keller in the past then. Although surprisingly she doesn't seem to be that well known in England, though she visited there. See you soon!
When I was at University we had her life story as reading and many if not all the people I know knew of her and her history Strange since if you read this such has always been a cause close to hearts of Britain :) History of the RNIB. In 1868 Dr Armitage founded the British and Foreign Society for Improving Embossed Literature for the Blind. In 1902, the organisation was renamed the British and Foreign Blind Association and, after receiving a Royal Charter, it became the Royal National Institute for the Blind in 1953.Helen is to this day beacon ....:)
Hi Helena.
Actually, I was only speaking from experiences related to my UA-cam channel,... when talking with various English youtube commenters. I don't have much experience talking to many people from Scotland or Wales on Y.T. But my experiences are limited to just a few dozen English subjects.. Even though they were mostly unfamiliar with Helen Keller...I suppose I shouldn't assume they represent the Majority of people in England. It's My mistake to make broad generalizations based on my limited experiences. . In the U.S Helen Keller's history is taught
to very young school children, as well as those in the more advanced stages of education. Perhaps it's the same in England.
At any rate...thanks for the "Feed-Back". We learn new things every day. Warmest regards! : )
Do you recall the film The Miracle Worker ..That was a film but good ,Concentrated most on Helen and Annie Sullivan .....and the break through ....Be fascinating here where things are tough in Germany ,Very few guide dogs are seen .One sees people with huge white poles that have a ball on the end .School children in UK are usually involved in funding the training of a guide dog ..Is this so in USA ? I was mainly in Chicago in the time I was there so cannot recall ...Think this is a plus of YT we get to find out lots and swap info ....Have a great week Helen
Yes... I have a video in my collection of uploads on my channel called - "Helen Keller - "Water Scene" from the Miracle worker". I plan on captioning it soon and re-releasing the new version. It's always been one of my more popular uploads. Perhaps if you have time someday, you can look at it and see if you think it would be practical to try and caption it. I fear the challenges of captioning it in a useful way, may be too great. And the whole little project might degenerate into something totally ridiculous if I didn't do it in just the right way. Sincere best wishes!
Nice tfs
Hi Slimchelle.
It's a pleasure to see you.

Hi Halyna. (or perhaps I should say "Galyna" because i think you told me there is no "H" in Ukrainian alphabet.) It's been awhile since you made a new youtube video. But I think you may have another channel on a different website. Anyway, I hope you are happy and in good spirits my friend. Wishing you a lovely Autumn. Always your friend! :o)
:) Warm greetings, Helen. In Ukrainian we have two letters - H and G. My name is Halyna or Halina [ha'lina] in my native Ukrainian tongue, may be you mean Russian, for Russian thinking people my name is [ga'li: na]. I am also on Vimeo but there are the same videos from my UA-cam channels (one for kid's, I couldn't come there because didn't have the e-mail where I created it. It belongs to nobody now) and that channel you know, only one video extra to them. The war stopped in my heart and it separated my life in half - before the war and during it. The war swallowes my energy and leaves pain. I can't do it now, sorry, but nobody knows what follows after.. Thank you. Hearty hugs and nice blessed autumn to you too, halyna

I wonder if Helen Keller understood/realized when Anne Sullivan died and Polly basically filled in for Anne?
She could communicate with people, and differentiate them by touch, so... yes? She was a very bright woman.
How would she know someone is coming she’s deaf ???
Probably through vibrations on the floor, felt through her feet.
It's explained in the video.
i wonder if she was born several years later and could get cochlear implant. how would it be.
Well ...I suppose it would depend on how severely Helen's auditory nerves had been damaged by the Scarlet fever that caused her deafness. I guess it's difficult to know. Thanks for your interest. best wishes! :o)
Thanks So very beautiful
Thanks!
