Good review. I know this is a couple years old, but a few things stood out to me: 1) Hawk places the lower step 1" higher than what you have showcased here. This puts the distance between steps at 17". 2) The new mini sticks don't have the two drilled holes I see on your mini stick, about 1/3 of the way up from the bottom. It appears that these were the factory drilled holes from a full stick, cut down to 20". 3) Grinding down that first ridge in the top step, thus getting the top steps to close tighter is spot on. It's one of the first things I noticed about mine. 4) Adding a Backwoods Mobile Gear "Versa Aider" allows you to get a comfortable 5' out of each mini stick. It's an alternative aider device to stretch out these minis. The advantage (as I see it) is two-fold; it stays attached to you as you climb and there's no searching for a toe loop on the way down. 5) Everyone should address/accept the well known problem of the suction cups being too tight and breaking off the male end of the connection. A couple minutes with a rotary tool or a sharp knife will fix that issue. 6) I added amsteel daisy chains for my attachment method. They hardly weigh anything, and served me well last season. I'm convinced the price to performance ratio can't be beat on these Hawk steps. Why anyone would spend 2-4x more money, to save a couple lbs, is beyond me.
Great input showing weights, climbing aider, size for packing, and step measurements. The 20's + the aider get you same as the full length but a lot of weight savings with the 8mm rope mod. At 2.5lbs x 4 = 10lbs total for 60" - 70" work area and 72" is 6 feet. So one mini with aider gets you roughly 6 feet of climbing distance. Math of 4 sticks x 6 = 24 feet which is plenty for a 10 -12lb system and smaller / easier to move through the woods with.
@@HuntingFarmerOfficial which sticks do you recommend the 20 in or 30 in sticks? The 30s seem like they could be cumbersome on long treks through the woods because of how long they are. I feel like they could get caught on stuff as I'm walking through the woods
I did a thing with my 30 inch sticks that I have not seen anyone do. Works great. I cut the each stick off about 2 1/2 inches below middle step and all I had to do was drill a bolt hole to reattach the bottom stand-off. This eliminated a lot of the flat bar a set of steps and one of the rubber stacking cups. I purchased a Ultimaider 3 step aider which I use all the way up to climbing height by attaching to next stick up until I reach height I need. Cut out lots of weight. I can climb higher with this setup than I could using full length set of sticks.
I cut my 30 inch helium's down to about 17 inches and use a five step aider. They were light originally but too cumbersome in length. Now they are much easier. I'll have to do a video on them soon.
I have not done any mods to my 30" hawk sticks except add a one step aider. These 20" mini sticks have my attention with the versa button. Thanks for sharing the in depth video on these stick.
I just got the newer 30" stix from Amazon for $98. They came with woven Versa straps. I'm 64 so I need shorter steps and hope these will work well with my JX3 Hybrid...I love them. TY for the review!
Again, another unbelievable video. Your content is great. I'm going to modify my 30" inch sticks to your 24" version, like the play. Keep it up and thanks again for sharing!!!
That’s how I am with rabbit hunting! So many things I’m interested in...only so many hrs in a day 😁 Thanks for watching. I appreciate your support and encouragement 👍
I made amsteel daisy chain for my mini's and made double amsteel aiders on two bottom sticks and one step aiders for tops two sticks. I love this setup and can get 20ft very easy.
Are you happy with how tight you can make the step with the daisy chain Amstel? That’s high on my list do next. Anything you’d do different? Thanks for watching my video. I just love learning from others when I can👍
@@HuntingFarmerOfficial yeah I'm pretty happy with them. Certain trees I have to go to the next loop on daisy chain and as long as you pull down and set step good they bite in good.
@@HuntingFarmerOfficial no mine loops are closer to 2". Some measure 1 3/4 and some measure 2". I tried to make them as close together as I could and they slide over versa button real nice. As I was making them I didn't measure with tape measure I used the versa button as my guide for size. But if I stretch the rope/loops out flat they measure 1 3/4 to 2". And they fit real good over button and I can keep rope as tight as possible around tree.
My 30" hawks came with webbing daisy chains. They work well and weigh next to nothing. Much easier to get off that put on. I use 4 hawk 30's. Oddly the single 30" Hawk stick I ordered cam with a buckle. I rope modded it with 1/4" HMWPE from ebay. $12 for 50' and works great. No need for a lone wolf button.
These look very handy. I think like you have, a person would want a few in different sizes to make the hight you personally want. Very cool sticks and I like how they can be hushed while walking.
I've got the hawk combo on the way from Midway. Versa buttons are already on the way from LW but that step grinding tip is the first thing I'm going to do when I get them. Thank you
@@HuntingFarmerOfficial Have you tried attaching the receiver part of the suction cup to your stand so in pairs the sticks "stick" to the stand? There is a video abt this somewhere.
@@HuntingFarmerOfficial when you stack them 2x2 on either side of the seat post you don't need extra cups. Just take the bottom cup off the one on top. The problem I found when doing it is that one side works well but the other side doesn't fit because the platform grate doesn't line up the same. I had to cut half of my tension knob off to get the seat post to lay flat when folded. On a side note, I also grabbed a shoulder harness and lumbar support from an old backpacking pack and now have a fully adjustable harness system to carry it.
I don't use these kinds of things so I'll have to trust your judgement on how sturdy and reliable your mods are, but if they suit your needs and you feel safe then that's what matters.
I just got the Hawk Mimi. And there are a couple things I'm going to change. I've had one of the suction cup break on me while trying to pull them apart in cold weather, And your Video was good.
There has been some discussion in the comments from other viewers on how to “soften” those suction cups up a bit. If you figure out a way, let us know! 😁 I’m also concerned the colder it gets the stiffer they’ll be ☹️
Bought four Hawk Heliums (full size) from Cabelas two weeks ago. The sticks were a nightmare to pull apart and every mating pair broke--either male or female. Called Hawk; they are well aware of the problem. All they could send me under warranty were replacement male parts until after the season is over. I compared the replacement item with the original. The materials indeed appear different and there is now a radius on the part where it failed.
@@willcoates1587 Hawk did not respond to my email, But what I did was grind out the inside of the female cup using a dremel with small round sanding cup. Also sanding on the male bottom head. They now slide together an apart without a lot of force. I should of did a video of it and posted it but made if Hawk sends me replacement ones I can .
Great video 👍 I used hawk helium’s last year with Amsteel daisy chains and liked them a lot! I just got some new lone wolf climbing sticks for this year though and am already missing the double step the hawk sticks offer.

How's she goin'? This a great review of these climbing sticks!!! Thanks for doing this. After seeing them all, I have to say, I like your's the best!!! Take care!!!
Do you have a suggestion for how to break in the suction cups on the newer sticks? I bought some recently and they are quite the pain to get separated, especially quietly. Did they eventually get easier for you to take them apart?
Mine are still fairly stiff still. I would also like to soften them up somehow but haven’t found a way yet. I’m concerned as winter approaches they are only going to get worse ☹️
@@HuntingFarmerOfficial Yeah, that was my exact fear too. What I ended up doing was using a utility knife and shaved out a portion of the receiver cup. I just cut, and then checked periodically. I eventually got to a point where they hold well still but are not difficult to remove.
Thanks for the review and putting out the measurements. I am considering the Hawks Mini. but I still think the distance between steps might be a little long. Do you think the bottom steps can be moved up, maybe 2 or 3 inches, leaving everything else in place. Just drilling two holes and grinding the inside humps would be the extent of this mod. Really don't want to carry the 30" sticks. Yeah, I'm kinda short, lol.
@@HuntingFarmerOfficial Just from looking at pictures, it seems like the the Top Step can move down to the just above the stand off (1.5 - 2 "drop) ; move the stand off to the bumper, bumper to Versa Button position and drop the versa button a couple inches. Or, just move the stand off to the space above the Versa Button. Either of those of those mod would require drilling 3 holes. Should be minimal impact on structural integrity. Also with the Versa button lower, I can place the stick higher on the tree. I'll know soon enough wen I get my sticks. Off course, if the step distance isn't an issue....no mod will be done.
I have the 30" 2019 sticks and I'm considering the 8mm rope mod. With the button that is already on the stick, how about reducing the gap of the existing button for the ropes to cinch down on each other. Chuck the button up in a lathe or set it up in a mill to take material off the end that contacts the stick. Achieving approximately the same space as if using the Versa Button and a spacer ?
Thank you for the video. I am looking at getting a set. Does the lone wolf versa button interfere with the original stacking method at all? I assume it’s basically the same profile as what comes on the hawk originally but wanted to double check. Thanks for the help.
The versa button does interfere because the bolt head sticks above the button. I countersink the bolt head to eliminate that problem. You also have to stagger the mounting position of the versa buttons to keep them from hitting each other 👍
One issue, not yours, but I've had to deal with warranty customer service and found it's a any way to get out of warranty or service is their priority.
No worries about questions...that’s how we all learn!! The Amsteel is popular because it’s so lightweight and strong. It does cost more and you won’t be able to use the versa button in the same way. With rope, the two layers of rope pinch together in the button creating a friction that helps hold it tight. The Amsteel won’t do that in the same way.
You could watch eBay etc. At $12 shipping would practically double their cost. You could always order a dozen of them and the shipping would only be a dollar a piece. 😂🤣😂
Very informative! However your scale is set to read pounds and ounces. For example you stated the full length stick plus buckle weighed 3.6 lbs. and that is NOT what your scale read. It actually said 3 lbs. 6.1 ounces. Similar mis-reading was done with each weight.
