Saw them on the Filthy Lucre Tour in '96 in Dallas. They were beyond great. Steve played what I'm sure was a copy of the pin-up girls Custom and a blue sparkle LP Custom. Also saw him well before play a New Years Eve show in LA at the Palladium in '89 after Fire and Gasoline came out, he played the pin-up girls Custom. He had really long hair but I think he was clean by then and again was great. I still have a '77 white (yellowed) LP Custom I bought used many years ago, Jones is the reason I bought it. I have never owned a Fender but I should get a Twin Reverb. I've thought about it before because of Bollocks (I thought it was stolen at a Faces show) and hearing you play the songs through one it's clearly the best sound. Great video. Never knew you were such a huge Pistols fan.
You've pretty much nailed the sound mate! Brilliant review as always! I have the same white Epiphone LP custom and agree it's a superb looking and playing guitar, actually I prefer it to my Gibson LP Standard 120th Anniversary model.
if i had seen this 10, 20, 30 , 40 years ago , i would have creamed myself. I was 16 in 1980 when i found the album NEVER MIND THE BOLLOCKS in the city library in Cedar Rapids Iowa. It changed my life then. Changed my taste in music. While me and my friends were listening to Rush, KISS, Nugent, Queen , Aersosmith. I felt i had FOUND something different. IT BLEW ME AWAY. My friends didnt get it, except one. We loved the PISTOLS. My first band, i taught them God Save the Queen. This is such a cool video. Classic Riffs.
Dagan there's a few vids on UA-cam that attempt Jonesie's tone. A couple of 'em come close. But jeez mate you NAILED it. I salute you sir! And all your train spotter info is spot on. Just one small correction - the custom WAS used on NMTB. There is actually an interview with Steve that explains just Bodies and EMI had the black beauty and he can still tell the slight tonal difference between it and the custom, which was used on all the other tracks.
I was still doing Jimi Hendrix meets Michael Schenker solo's when Sex Pistols dropped their album. I learned it by heart immediately, started a punkband with some guys, most of our songs were Sex Pistols and Damned covers lol, then I was asked to join the only Dutch punkband that had a record deal, we recorded some great songs and did a lot of great gigs at a lot of great places, I barely played a solo for at least 1-2 years, not until I bought a 1975 Gibson Flying V in '79, it totally pissed off the singer so I quit the band. Then I heard Van Halen 1 and started learning new riffs and solo's again, man those were crazy days!!! Ps: Dagan if ya wanna talk ADHD, i'm all ears 🤣😂🤣

I love Epiphone guitars, and usually argue that they are absolutely close to the sound of Gibson, but Steve Jones (my favorite guitar player of all time) didn't play guitar, he played tone, and his tone is so specific that the Epiphone just can't reproduce it. Great video. And btw, there's a black p90 Epiphone Les Paul behind you.
The main difference is pickups in this case to Epiphone. Their probuckers are ever bit of a paf recreation as burst buckers. The Steve Jones Les Paul has 490T and 490R which are very different and more high output than the mid output paf style of the probuckers and burst buckers. The p90 in the background is a signature JJN old glory.
I got an epiphone les paul, and thanks to this I was able to get the tune I needed without having to buy the specific gear. I can't play nearly as good as the handsome fellow in this video, but pretty much the entirety of last year I've been trying to replicate songs from that one album watching dozens of different riffs and different peoples takes on the same song. When I got into the pistols I could barely play, now I'm honestly finally content with what I'm doing. I got me own playstyle, I can kind of competently play punk. Sure, its easy to hear that my playstyle is very pistols-inspired (except I can't play solos for shit) but I mean its enough for me. If I got a lead guitar to accompany it actually sounds sick
1. Its SYLVAIN SYLVAIN. 2. YES it had a Bigsby put on by Syl, who took it off. 3. Both the '57 and the Custom were used on the album, its just that a photographer was there for one session when the' 57 was used. 4. Jones only used an SG on the 1978 NO ONE IS INNOCENT / BELSEN VOSSA GASSA session in Rio with Ronnie Biggs. 5. The original Joned guitar is in rough shape, the stickers have peeled off, and the holes where the Bigsby was mounted are exposed.
@@mjh5437 it is in Hawaii..... A woman has it. It is in bad shape. Heavily yellowed, the decals came off long ago and the shapes where they used to be can be seen. She offered it to Jones a few years ago for hundreds of thousands of dollars, but seeing the state of it, he wasnt interested.
Great playing and sound. "Fire and Gasoline" was a great record too. I saw him playing live while he was touring that record. I think he was opening for The Cult. I also got to spend a good part of an evening with him at the Cathouse in L.A. I'm pretty sure he only hung out with me cause I had cigarettes and was gushing over his work. We parted ways that night when he noticed a girl seemed very interested in me and he asked me what I was doing hanging out with him when I could be hanging out with her. I took his advice but- in all honesty I would have rather hung out with him.
Anyone that doesnt love the sound of the LP whether it be an Epiphone or a Gibson or a copy cant fully appreciate an iconic sound! Jus sayin! Thanks Dagan and PMT!
I loved this video. I first started playing after watching Play in a Day the Steve Jones Way on the Nevermind the Bollocks Rockumentary (Which I noticed you referenced a lot). I just used to watch it and copy his hand movements. The sound I've always wanted to recreate was his from that segment with the Marshall High Stack and a Burny. He even plays down half a step in that one I saw an article about the origninal Steve Jones custom because Steve actually sold it at one point. Jah Wobble from PIL thinks he owns it but Jones was presented with "The original" and he looked over it a few times saying "It'd been broken a few times" but the knocks wern't right on it so it wasn't the right one
Nice job... You forgot about a critical item to Jonesy sound Fender label orange painted GAUSS 12" speakers that were a custom option $$$ in those years. thanks
What a treat, he's a real hero to me along with John Mcheogh, although the custom and Fender are the most authentic, the Marshall TSL has the body of the layered recording.
awesome to hear some riffs from jonesys fire and gasoline lp jonesy was the best show/band ive ever seen live it was at the Ibeam in san francisco in 1991. jonesy shredded hard
Steve Jones preferred his black ‘54 custom to the white Les Paul along with his double cut 58/59 ? Les Pau Special the ‘Sylvain Sylvain’ white custom originally had a Bigsby B7on it ( check out back of the cover of New York Dolls album ‘Red Painted Leather ‘ where this guitar can be seen with the Bigsby B7 …. It’s iconic but was not very involved with the recording of the Pistols stuff. The black ‘54 custom and a Flying V were supposedly the mainstay of recording
I have a white custom Epi Les Paul bought it in homage to Excalibur I have often thought about changing the pickups for some black P90s and getting the pin up stickers. and yep it was Steve Jones who inspired me to pick up the guitar.
Thanks for this. Really great work on a very underrated guitarist.
I was surprised to learn that Jonesy didn't record NMTB with that white Les Paul. He recorded using a black LP with P90's.
Nice piece of "authentic anarchy" on the right there.
You're also sort of going full circle with it, video-wise. Neat touch.
if i had seen this 10, 20, 30 , 40 years ago , i would have creamed myself.
LIke button smashed. Steve Jones is the guvnor. Always will be!
Hey man I just finished watching the first 4 episodes of The Pistols on Disney!
Great video. Love Jonesy especially Fire and Gasoline album and Instinct album he did with Iggy Pop.
I Remember trying the white Gibson of Steve in Denmark Street in 82.. What a moment for a froggy!! 🇫🇷
Absolutely superb! Jonesy getting the well earned respect today that we’ve known he’s deserved for forty odd years…. cos I’m an old get.
i've just watched pistol (the pistols biopic) and jesus fuggin christ it was amazing, especially the casting i mean the guy who played johnny rotten completely nailed the character and the voice i absolutely recommend that series to anyone, even if you have never liked the pistols
I grew up on Jonesy's riffs from Never Mind the Bollocks! Little 80's troublemaker I was : )
Great stuff Dagan!
*BOLLOCKS* ffs!!

Ever see the Ramones live before Dee Dee left the band kid?!
I have. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

My mum's more punk than ye.🙄
Ah ok! I love the 490r 498t's, that's why the 90s Les Paul studios were so sought after when I was a kid. perfect for punk rock
EMI is mine favourite too, I didn't know it was played like that, what a great sound!
Wow I didn’t see that coming, you made my day! Can you do the ramones, the clash, mcr or blink 182?
blink 182🤮💩
Is that a pun ?
MCR would be cool, though they don't make the Phant-o-Matic anymore.

@@efthymioskotsotas8220 i didn't see it coming is an album from Steve Jones 🤣
Probably the best I have seen on UA-cam. Awsom bro
Aw man you played that medley at the start like a massive fan. Brilliant
Awesome video thanks for this, I love Steve Jones guitar tone & riffs always love to see him getting the props he deserves 👊🏻
This is magnificent. You have made me so happy. I heard about the P90 on Bollox Album. You confirmed it. You rule. 😎😊♥️
Where is the original now?
I don’t have a Les Paul Custom Custom but my Gibson SG Junior did alright. Angry little guitar. I had that same giddy smile playing those riffs.
Same. Saw Sex Pistols in 1996 and been playing guitar since. P90s through a Fender apparently.
Fantastic video!! Very complete!!
What electric guitar strings used Steve Jones in the Les Paul Custom 0.10 or 0.11? Thanks.-
Anyone that doesnt love the sound of the LP whether it be an Epiphone or a Gibson or a copy cant fully appreciate an iconic sound! Jus sayin! Thanks Dagan and PMT!
I thought I was the only one who listened to "Mercy" relentlessly when it came out.
He even plays down half a step in that one
I saw an article about the origninal Steve Jones custom because Steve actually sold it at one point. Jah Wobble from PIL thinks he owns it but Jones was presented with "The original" and he looked over it a few times saying "It'd been broken a few times" but the knocks wern't right on it so it wasn't the right one
What microphone and interface did you record this with? It's incredible.
I realize you do the best videos. Never annoying, excellent playing. Thanks !! 👑👑👑
2 very different guitarist. Good choice
Pretty Vacant one the best guitar and drum intros ever Steve always like to hear to talk about the old days nice guy
I agree. It sends shivers down my spine.
What is the white (possibly Boss) pedal on the floor next to the MXR? Tuner? - 8.40 into the vid
Just a Boss Tuner, not specific to the video. 👍
Amazing video!!! I’m not sure if I understood right, so he doesn’t have his original 74’ Les Paul from Sylvain sylvain?
He doesn’t! Apparently he knows who has it, but they wanted to sell it back to him so he sacked it off. Or so I’ve heard! Ha! - Dagan
Johnny Thunders would be a goodie.
He should do the New York dolls in general
Yes!!!!
Hell yes!
5:28 lmao my mum and dad were at that bob marley gig in Hammersmith
I have a made in Japan Burny les Paul custom. Steve Jones used Burny.
Half hour of pure Pistols pleasure
hi! nice job mate. a question: where did steve got that black beauty and that firebird? cheers
Matlock played the bass on Anarchy on the album, think they used the EMI recorded version of it.
awesome to hear some riffs from jonesys fire and gasoline lp
jonesy was the best show/band ive ever seen live it was at the Ibeam in san francisco in 1991.
jonesy shredded hard
Steve Jones preferred his black ‘54 custom to the white Les Paul along with his double cut 58/59 ? Les Pau Special the ‘Sylvain Sylvain’ white custom originally had a Bigsby B7on it ( check out back of the cover of New York Dolls album ‘Red Painted Leather ‘ where this guitar can be seen with the Bigsby B7 …. It’s iconic but was not very involved with the recording of the Pistols stuff. The black ‘54 custom and a Flying V were supposedly the mainstay of recording
Please keep doing these videos.
Damn near spot-on tone and playing
The Custom just sounds thicker and fuller than the others. Great Vid.
I really dig those pin up stickers on your guitar .. where did you get them ? .. those will be perfect for my Gretsch 🎸
Do a Johnny Thunders one! Tv jr and fender deluxe reverb
Great playing! Nice tone! Love Sex Pistols! Its nice to hear Phaser on Anarchy In The UK, didnt know about this pedal.
Thany you for this outstanding video. My favorite band. My favorite guitar tone!
Pretty sure the sylvain les paul had a bigsby at one time, my friends made some great replicas of it out of various guitars
He did.
Nicely timed video 😉
Very well done 🤘
I have a white custom Epi Les Paul bought it in homage to Excalibur I have often thought about changing the pickups for some black P90s and getting the pin up stickers. and yep it was Steve Jones who inspired me to pick up the guitar. I know Gibson did a limited edition custom but I would pee my pants if Epiphone did a tribute guitar they have obviously done a few lately and I have the Noel Gallagher Riviera. I have a Marshall Code amp and that has JCM800 pre set so going to try it with my Les Paul
How did you daisy chain that Marshall into the Tone Master. I don't want to screw up my tone master deluxe reverb. Because I would love to pick up either that Jubilee or the new Saldona solid state amp
