    Hi Eileen. There’s no difference, both the pot tubers and the larger tubers that were grown in the garden last year will be used in the garden this year. I will be showing you how I take cuttings to grow in pots as new pot tubers in later episodes.

    How are you guys? coming from NJ, USA seven a week ago I bought two dahlias in packages one didn't have a name it was just a variety of pastel colored dahlias and the other one is called snow country now the pastel variety has sent up a shoot it's about an inch tall the snow country there's nothing going on but thanks to your video about how some dahlias are like people and they like to wake up late I am so grateful for that explanation I'll give it another couple weeks and see what happens thank you so so much!!!

    Hello from Australia, your dahlia and flower videos are both entertaining and instructional. I am trying dahlias from some old seed I found, a few have germinated. I visited the Portland Botanical Garden yesterday...that’s in Victoria State, Australia, and their gardens were spectacular with huge growth of dahlias and barely a leaf to be seen with those gorgeous flowers. About 6 double beds 100yds long with lawn between the beds all in full sun. I only grow a few dahlias but planning more. Love the tips on propagation.....thanks. Winnie Whopper was special yesterday.Do you know it? Hope your back straightens up with no more aches. Love your attitude to life Heather.

    Hi, thank you for your videos. I'm following your method but I have doubt: I have put the tubers in boxes and cover them witj light compost to activate them. They are indoors. I watered the compost once. Should I keep it watering it? If so, how much, how often? A big thanks

    Great video. Here, in my area, the tubers go in the ground around the 1st of march. I never had any issues with them, they blossom in late may and do it until November, when I dig them out. This winter was warmer, perhaps the tubers could have survived in the ground...

    You got me addicted to dahlias Geoff & Heather I loved watching your video. I do hope I can come to look at your beautiful flowers this year and I hope one day my garden will look like yours. I have had to get baby sitters for mine this year because of the poor drainage and leather jackets have ruined alot of my tubers so if you have any tips on how to get rid of leather jackets I would be grateful. We have tried nematodes but it's not worked and they have bored holes in some of my tubers 😢 I made the mistake of storing them this year in compost and sawdust but it's proving hard to get the sawdust out of the tubers so I hope they don't rot as they get going!

    Hi Laurel. It’s fine to do as you describe if that is the effect you want. As you say, I try to pack in lots of different varieties to give a kaleidoscope effect.

    I absolutely love your dedication! I'm following along religiously this year as it's really my first year for dahlias in my small boarder. Can you explain at some stage how you do "pot tubers" like when you create these and the process? Apologies if this is coming. Can't wait to see!

    Hi QO. As you will see in later videos I stop my pot tubers from flowering and keep them relatively short, so they put all their energy into making a tuber.

    Re growing from seed, I would say pot them up into individual pots before planting out after frosts end. When they flower, try to be ruthless: throw out the ones that have open centres, distorted petals etc. They don’t improve in their second year; I learned that the hard way!

    I would dig them up and divide them as soon as you can. Remember that you only need one shoot attached to one tuber, so if some break off it doesn’t matter.

    The shoots on my young dahlias are turning black and are shriveling up. I keep the tubers in an unheated greenhouse and make sure the potting mix (old garden soil & sand) stays damp. What am I doing wrong ? Thanks Geoff & Heather

    I've read that you can prevent stored tubers from rotting by dusting with Flowers of Sulphur before storing. Is this something you've ever tried? Any go od?

    Hi and thank you for the video’s- I’m learning slowly what to do with my newly bought tubers (from plastic bags in garden centres)
    One question, what’s the difference between your pot dahlias and your “to be planted out” ones please?

  • @Dahliaholic
    @Dahliaholic  3 роки тому

    Your old soil might contain fungus which is rotting the leaves. Alternatively you might be keeping them too wet. Until a tuber starts to produce roots as well as shoots, it is still susceptible to rot caused by overwatering.

    So what temperatures are you at now? Here in Canada, we are still in minus digits during the night and teens during the day. I do have a greenhouse, but here it's still too cold so we have basements, and mine has a sand floor and is quite cold, but not freezing. So looking forward to the next step. If mine survived the winter.!

  • @Dahliaholic
    @Dahliaholic  3 роки тому

    Just make sure the top of the compost stays moist. Once roots start emerging from the tubers it’s ok to give them more water.

    Hi, you say you divide the tubers as too many shoots on a plant result in a 'congested mess'. Is that because you want to grow just one of two stems for bigger flowers and so you can fit in more varieties? As I am happy with shorter stems with more, smaller, flowers over a long season, is it ok to plant each one leaving several tubers with multiple shoots?

  • @AmydStockport
    @AmydStockport Рік тому

    Hi, I’ve bought some tubers and I’m wondering whether to divide them after they’ve created shoots? Would they be big enough to do this (as you mentioned they may have been grown as pot tubers)? Also - have you done a video on how your support your dahlias and how you label them once in the ground? Thanks!

    • @Dahliaholic
      @Dahliaholic  Рік тому +1

      Hi Amy. It should be possible to divide them provided shoots are attached to separate tubers. Re labelling and support, try my video “Growing dahlias month by month episode 8 early June”
