I put a few peeled, boiled eggs in my leftover pickle juice in the fridge, after a couple of days they are yummy and we eat them with our supper. Sweet or dill juice works, whatever your taste preferences. Thanks for sharing your knowledge. You, Mrs. Volfie and Katzcraddle are some of my favs and I have learned so much from all of you.
Hey Lady, Just picked my first couple of boston picklers off the vine this week. Should have enough for my first batch in the next week or so. I've only done refrigerator pickles so far. Gonna try this method this year. Yours look delicious!
You could use some of that pickle juice to make some yummy dressing for salads. You could make on3 that kind of taste like Catalina or French. I use to make a sweet pickle when was a teenager that took a week to brine in a crock. You'd drain the brine, boil it every day, let it cool, and pour it back on the pickle slices. Huge pain, but exceptionally delicious. Don't know what ever happened to the recipe, but I'd love to have it again.
@gogogardener I had a crappy harvest and I had 6 plants and did both a batch of sweet and dill. So if you have better weather than our drought and heat here in Texas less plants will do just make sure they are pickling cucs. Blessings!
@skybirdbird Pickle crisp is calcium chloride and alum is potassium aluminium sulfate. I hear it works better for refrigerated pickles but not much better than cutting the blossom end off in processed pickles. I wouldn't waste my money the next time. Blessings
I canned stuff with my mom, but i was in my teens and I am now in my 40's, & kinda forgot how to do it. and have lots of cucs....& will be using your video as I go along making my sweet pickles. Thank You!!
I thoroughly enjoy your vids, Bexar Prepper. Thanks for sharing your knowlege. I cracked up when you said you use knee highs for your spice bag. What an ingenious idea!!! (:
4lbs zucchini, 4 small onions, 1/2c pickling salt 6 c white vinager, 1 1/2 tsp salt, 1 1//2 tsp turmeric, 3 tsp mustard seed, 4 1/2 c cider vinager. Wash zucchini and cut thinly; peel and cut onions in 1/4 inch sliced thin. Cover with water and add the salt. Let stand for 2 hours and drain well. Bring rest of ingredients to a boil and pour over zukes and onions. Let stand 2 hours. Bring to a boil and boil 5 minutes. pour in jars and cold pack 15 minutes in a boiling water bath. Blessings!
@BexarPrepper Thanks. I have trouble growing cucumbers here, so I'll plant extra. It's one of those plants the bugs attack and can't thrive. I'll try worm castings this year to see if that helps keep the white flies away. I refuse to give in, and will keep trying new things until I get a good crop. I'm in the low desert and water is always an issue here too. Compost in the soil + an inch blanket over established plants helps alot. God bless ya, and thanks for sharing your videos!
Sj Smith rosemary... the seasoning... make a strong tea from it and spray the plants 👍. If that isnt strong enough. Use Bay Leave tea the same way. Honestly i mix mine 😉 just in case.
They look really good, and it looks like you had a pretty good harvest from your garden. My garden didn't do so well, but I know someone who did, and I will definitely be using their stuff to make some pickles :)
Great video, I love having pickle juice on hand, when ever I have a sore throat and cough it works like a charm, not sure why but it does. add a peanut butter and pickle sandwich if it's real bad. Take care Pete
I love pickles! I dont think I will be getting many cucumbers this year so I might not be able to can any from my garden but I will be finding some at the farmers market. I also have that book and I love it!
@67palove Your welcome, sweet pickles are really easy and you can use any pot that is deep enough to cover the jars with 2" of water just remember to put a towel or canning jar rings on the bottom to keep the jars off the bottom of the pot. Let me know how it goes. Blessings!
@Ziva4Freedom Pickle crisp is calcium chloride I hear it works better for refrigerated pickles but not much better than cutting the blossom end off in processed pickles. I wouldn't waste my money the next time. Blessings
Yum! Reminds me of the lime pickles my grandma used to make---Just a bit different tho. I think she brined them for 3 days, pouring brine off everyday and boiling, and reapplying. Have to see if i can find her recipe. I will have to find cucks to try this! Thanks!
@skybirdbird I won't wast my money on Pickle crisp just cut the blossom ends off and they will stay just as crisp. Unless you make refrigerator pickles they are always the crispist.
@katzcradul I think the brine and crock was the only way the ole timers knew how to make them, that was also how I was taught. I also don't have that recipe anymore but I do still have the Kosher dill pickle recipe they gave me :) Blessings!
@niffer58 sound like the pickle vinager wasn't the right acidity. You wont have that problem with these since they are sweet pickles. Its the ball canning book. Skybirdbird has a link in one of her videos on a free dowmload of it. Blessings!
Thanks! And I have been asking around because of all the grandbabies I have....is there some kind os sweets...desserts....to make and can? If so which are the best and what is the shelf life? I know everyone thinks I am nuts but I figure if I have to rely on it someday....at least I have treats for the kids lol. Okay, I admit I have a sweet tooth as well. This is something I would enjoy doing and figured you'd know.
hello i have a question i canned my pickles and they all sealed but as i look at them the pickles have floated above the brine should i open and add more brine and re process or are they ok maybe i can turn them upside down?? thank you great video i guess i didn't get all the bubbles out :(
I haven't had much luck pickling cucumbers. only did it once but they went bad. not real sure what i did wrong. but they got all milky.. ewww. Maybe i will try it this way next time. thank you. by the way what book is that so i can get it please thanks
I gotta say, those are some of the absolute BEST sweet pickles I have ever had.. wonderful!! Bexar, you can make soem smashing pickles, gal! Love ya! Gie
Well, my wife has tried 2 new recipes this year, gonna open a couple of jars in a week or so and test them. If they aren't good, we're gonna try this one. One of them was an Amish recipe that used mustard, the other was just dill and garlic. Do you offer online courses ? Nice mater too, looked pretty good.. .. Great job BP, as usual ! ;-)
@MyDaddysgirl44 no dill pickles are easier. I just opened a jar of dills pickles and the pixkle crisp didnt make a difference so doing back to my old easy way. As soon as i get enough cucs ill show you how. Blessings
Pretty much forever lol Pickles are the longest lasting canned product because of the vinegar the only thing that ever happens to them is they can shrivel up some. Blessings!
@LANELLEHOLT40 before I did the radio show a yt? friend told me to have some cider vinager it really helped to calm the stomach so I would agree with you. thanks for sharing . Blessings!

With the pickles we've bought previously. I use left over juice for upset stomach. People think i'm crazy but it works for me.
Orris Holt work for camping legs or hands also. Great tip. Thanks
I just love all of your canning videos! They are so helpful! Thank you for taking the time to make them!

lemoncrinckles my granny always used knee highs for seasoning packs 30 yrs ago ish. Or longer. Lol. Smart ladies back in the day.

I wanted to try that this year but it looks like I'll have to wait for next as my harvest is not so big.

How many cucumber plants do you think I need to get a 7 lb harvest for the recipe? I'm planning my garden now.

@niffer58 sound like the pickle vinager wasn't the right acidity. You wont have that problem with these since they are sweet pickles. Its the ball canning book. Skybirdbird has a link in one of her videos on a free dowmload of it. Blessings!

You bet and they will last about 20 years. You'll get them all long before they can expire. Blessings!
It won't change the floating they are just older cuc's they will taste fine and eventually settle in the brine. Blessings!
I haven't had much luck pickling cucumbers. only did it once but they went bad. not real sure what i did wrong. but they got all milky.. ewww.

Great idea. The Honey's and I appreciate your support. Blessings!
You can find them really cheap at the dollar store and you know they are no good for wearing when you can get 4 for a dollar LOL Blessings!
Thank you so much! Can I ask you one more question? How long do you cook the pickles if they are sliced?
Is there a step that I can extend the time so it will work with my schedule? How much time can I add on? Thank you, Sue
Pretty much forever lol Pickles are the longest lasting canned product because of the vinegar the only thing that ever happens to them is they can shrivel up some. Blessings!
Left it on the counter. Blessings!
you are awesome.. a great teacher, and so down to earth... Thank you :)
Thank you so much! How long can you store them? In the pantry?
Yes in the olden days they didn't they just put them in a jar and called it good. Now squash pickles you have to process.
Bring to a boil and boil 5 minutes. pour in pint jars and cold pack 15 minutes in a boiling water bath. Blessings!
@LANELLEHOLT40 before I did the radio show a yt? friend told me to have some cider vinager it really helped to calm the stomach so I would agree with you. thanks for sharing . Blessings!
