Not a fan of the new lemartes at all. One of the coolest things on the old one is the skeleton toes which are unsurprisingly gone. I would say Gw are just droppping the ball but I think it’s intentional that they are watering everything down and making it more generic. At least Astorath looks cool. Almost impossible to fuck that up
Old Lemartes sculpt is still awesome. the new sculpt looks with a fatter/bigger head, bigger torso and smaller legs. Upper Legs are thin and from the knee down its, fat and or chunky. Huge shoulders pads and tiny arms. And a FATpack instead of a jetpack. Looks top heavy and looks like his about to falling over on his face. An ugly ass skull for a shoulderpad as well... damn GW disappoints so hard this year... glad I have the old sculpt!
I mean, yeah, new Lemartes is different, but in my opinion not a substantial upgrade to the old model. New Astaroth on the other side is hand down a major improvement, i like him a lot. The other models are already known kits, unfortunatly, just with a new Blood Angels upgrade sprue. They are not even death company specific - so you could just build and paint them as regular BAs, if you like...
The previous Lemartes model looked 'sanguine'. Aware of his fate but still in control of his rage. He looks like a Saint. He looks like an exemplar to all those noble souls within the Blood Angels chapter, those who fight on to retain themselves/ control their psyche, even though in their hearts they know they are lost. New model is an angry loyalist World Eater doing his best Imortan Joe impression (Mad Max Fury Road). Angry screaming berserker man number 4238. Do I think the new model looks cool? Aw he'll yeah, angry screaming berserker men look cool for most people. But I do think they've missed the point of Lemartes as a character. The thing that differentiates Blood Angels from World Eaters. A lot of people choose Blood Angels 'because' of the tragedy. Because of the whole 'Catholic Saint fighting on even though condemed' vibe. You can't really get that from any other Scifi setting. That's why I prefer the previous model. It's a more unique and nuanced vibe
Kinda a shame the Death Company is just an upgrade sprue, I feel like there's a lot of character with the old Death Company kit that's going to be lost when it's replaced for a bunch of shoulderpads.

It looks like a battle stance a Khorne Bezerker might adopt. It also annoys me, because lore wise wasn't Lemartes supposed to be "in control" of himself" despite the black rage, and was acting as a Sheppard for the other lost battle brothers? Here it looks like he has fully lost it.
I think that is old art on the Codex, however I don't think it was ever used on a Blood Angel Codex, I think it was on a campaign book . Either way, it's been so long since it has been used , if it is old, that you would not confuse it for 9th edition codex. Can't say the same for the normal edition codex art work.
Astorath pose is way better than the old one. Especially the left arm (and hand) - which now is oriented so it is ready to pull the axe forwards as it should be.
Its really interesting to hear your point on Lamartes, cuz for me its the exact opposite 😆I even had to check who was Lemartes again and I went "wait, THAT model, damn its supposed to be an update of THAT", I do like that he's basically in a MKIV tho, with the little hip armours, I would like to try to convert it full Horus Heresy and use it cross-game as a proxy for whatever. Astorath is definitely better proportioned and pretty much the same, but yeah, would tweak the pose a lil bit personally and add those parchment back ! also the nipples, where are the nipples 😆and the face is way better on the old one
I really wish they gave Lemartes the Astorath treatment. Much of the changes to him I'm just not a fan of. I really just wanted more of the same but new. That's all he needed to be. I think the biggest disappointment to me is the generic death company intercessors. I'd have loved them to keep the engraved crosses. These ones are very lazy.
That Upgrade Sprue is the worse of the current ones , imo. So sad that the awesome 1st Born Death Company are being replaced with these boring af , plan Jane Marines just painted black. 😢😭
i don't dislike either of these new sculpts but i do think lamartes is a step down in character, he just looked more macabre before, hard to put my finger on it but yeah. also i'm really fed up with the scale inconsistencies from mini to mini now, primaris was supposed to be an in-universe excuse for the astartes to actually tower over mortal men like they're supposed to, and a bit of scale creep in general. on that score astaroth seems very well-proportioned, but lamartes has little stubby legs that look even more puny beneath his huge barrel chest. it gives me oldschool terminator vibes and that's baaaad. this sort of thing's meant to have disappeared now but for some reason it's still happening
@@catcadev i'm talking about scale, not size. he may well be huge but his proportions are off so he looks janky. some scale consistency would be nice, all primaris should have basically the same size limbs, torsos and heads, otherwise shit like this happens where a character has inexplicably tiny legs
@@whiteshark0165 that shield captain is as wide as he is tall, how exactly is the angle gonna change that? the custodes models in general are far too short and stubby, they should be taller than primaris according to decades of lore but they're tiny; that shield captain mini is the best example of this though, he could be a votann

I would have loved it if they did Lemartes like Mephiston and based him on art, I personally find the lack of scrolls and the less detailed mask a letdown, tbh, the old one stands up side by side as equal. I mean, it is fine cast so quality and build experience are rancid, plastic is so so much better in this regard. I don't like how his wings are less feathery and organic, with very raven guard stylized sculpture ornamentation. The kind of quasi-angelic flutter he had before was good. His mask, aside from the blood diadem crown thing, does give me old Necron Pariah/Drukhari Archon vibes though. Lemartes though I think it's a major letdown, he's not fully Coteazed but a lot. The mask change is disappointing, and he needs more paper - don't get me wrong though I think it is probably the single best Primaris Chaplain so far aside from the Indomitus on who's a resculpt inspired by a firstborn - and Lemartes does maintain his arm and leg detailing aside from the less paper more iron. As you said in your video the other day, the kind of Renaissance art pose he had was good. I do concede the banding like he's the demon needing caged in, and in the death company crosses is very good, but the mask is so different it doesn't feel like him. If they just had made him a Chaplain with Jump Pack that would have been amazing though.
I don’t know how they managed it, but the new model for Lemartes looks like it’s got the firstborn proportions, and the old sculpt looks like it has the Primaris scale up. 🤷🏻♂️
I’m pretty sure there’s just a single new upgrade sprue for the Blood Angels. They’ve just included multiple copies of it in the box set to cover all the models included.
It's not even the issue. Even if you got the money to buy a shit load of upgrade sprues, you would only get crap to put on the belts. Specific weapons and cool details are now lost (Unless they FINALLY make an actual death company kit in the following years).
8:20 I feel like the paint job on the old sculpt is quite a bit better. The wings on the old one look better too. I like mini's more in scale though, so that has the new one going for it for sure.
Astorath is a great reimagining of the old model. But Lemartes... id... he's kinda bland other than his hairband on the skull helmet (yes hairband, for it lost its halo properties with the spikes and stuff, now it looks like a hairband for a bald skull)
I do find it funny that, when the last version of Lemartes was released, a great may people complained that the model was too 'busy', with too much detail obscuring clean lines and needlessly complicating painting and modelling. Now that we see a more paired back Lemartes sculpt, people (and I suspect some of the same people) are complaining that it lacks detail and is too 'bland'. The consistent throughline seems to be the complaining.

I’m not the biggest blood angels fan, but after that failure of an inquisitor, this was a much needed relief. I adore that skull helmet on lemartes even if it’s not 100% right. Granted, I’m obviously on a mad max kick right now, so I’m happy with anything immortan Joe related. Also, at least purity seals are extremely easy to come by to add more.
The accursed Tactical Rock... I redid my Storm Boyz with flight stands, which added money and time to the process simply because I hate sculpted in Tactical Rocks.
Since they already updated black templars and dark angels, if they refresh more of the blood angels range after this, i feel like it would make sense for them to look at space wolves next in the not so far future. And a space wolves update would propably come with Russ' return, so that might indirectly hint at him being the next primarch to return on the loyalist side. Maybe a Fulgrim vs Russ showdown at the end of 10th could be interesting.
I made my own warmag because they don't ship to Australia, got a plastic box, glued magnets to the bottom of the base and magnetic tape to the bottom of the box.
Both are trash. Astorath arms look odd and Lemartes "HELMET" mouth is open, the pose looks like he's taking a shit and honestly He of all people is still in control even though he suffers from the black rage.
yea astorath is pretty good upgrade, honestly exactly what they should be doing instead of the intern sculpts like coteaz. the only nitpick I have is that I like how the old is pivoted up by the scrolls while the new one is doing a rather standard leap, but that should be really easy to fix at home so its its whatever. for once Im not upset they are upgrading an existing model, I had been genuinely afraid for years now that its gonna suck once its gets upgraded but its not bad.
The shoulders on Astorath look… wrong. Really looks like someone pulled the arms of an action figure way back rather than sculpting a person with raised arms.
People are saying Astorath looks amazing. And yeah it is but the wings and face mask just look off for me. The wings don't look as feathery as before, the mask also seeming too smooth and less detailed. Though a good paint job could fix this
In my opinion this was a very lazy thing for games workshop to do. Only 2 new sculpts in the whole box, the rest are just kits we already had with upgrade sprews, lazy as hel
I actually prefer the new rubble base that Astorath is on to the partchment on the old model. I don't have have a BA force but this might start to sway me!
I think parchment is cooler than a rock in general, but I don't think this is the right mini for it. It detracts from the unhinged ferocity of the rest of the guy.
@fin4314 I agree parchment is itself more interesting than rubble for sure. But I just personally am not a fan of long unfurled partchement (I'm general) supporting the in-flight action of any mini.
@@fin4314 I prefere tactical rocks for practical reasons. It makes the model more stable and less prone to breaking. Counting how many times my friend broke his saint Celestine or one of her lil friends starts to get boring.
Being that it's called a "Death Company Dreadnought", it makes me wonder if you can make a Redemptor one as well as a Brutalis. A Ballistus seems like a waste of time, though.
I like the new Lemartes. He's a big, black, angry Space Marine that's here to break your spine because he sees a bit too much Horus. The Blood Angels artisanry is nice and all, but people forget how quickly that can fall away into just brutal savagery when they're afflicted by the Black Rage. Lemartes here is an excellent reminder of that. What the Blood Angels are fighting to stave off.
I still prefer both Lemartes and Astaroth in their previous versions. Old sculpts seem more...elegant? I don't know, new Lemartes looks a bit like a literal toy.
I MEHED, yes nice new character sculpts but box is held back by bloatware jump intercessors that have been shelf warming the distribution center since release
By the low primaris marine standards, the new Lemartes is pretty good The OG is better as usual, you just knew the bone fingers were too cool for primaris to have
I have to say that I like both a lot. Although I like the new Lemartes menacing pose, definitely Astorath is truer to the original model. I hope his shoulder pads are not built in the torso, because the right arm in particular, is in a bit exaggerated upright position
Anyone know the base size for the new HQ chars? Wahpedia still says 25mm, but no way the bases shown for the new models are that tiny. I assume 40mm now? Dante now being 50mm, this would make sense being one step up from the average marine, but one scale below mr perfect
Not a bad update but it does feel a little plain and less baroque to me. Do think removing the bone toes makes sense as they did look a bit odd in my view.
It's probably because of the angle that the photo is taken at, but new Lemartes strangely looks squatter and more firsborn-y than the old one to me. Edit: I do like the update on his armour for the most part, but old Lemartes had a dignity in his pose that I loved. New one just looks angry
I'll be honest, I'm not a fan of the new models here. New Lemarties lacks this sanctified, regal look he used to have, contrasting him being part of the Death Company - he looks way too feral in my opinion. And I REALLY hate the tiny intakes on Primaris jump packs. I won't ever get over this. New Astorath ALMOST gets it, but the whole model is kneecapped by lack of parchment - which added a lot of mystique and dynamics to the old model. DC upgrades for DC marines and Dread also look somewhat sub-par - they lack the decorative elements, as with a lot of Primaris stuff, they feel vary plain and bare bones, to be honest.
Lemartes pose isn't as nice, but I wouldn't complain. I'd definitely be putting the scroll work back on both minis, seems to be something GW has been moving away from which is a shame.
New Lemartes looks like he's wearing headphones, but at least he has a lot of character to him. What I'm not feeling is how bare the death company marines look, as old death company were still quite decorated. Edit: They chopped Astorath's nipples off.
@@stevoc9930 a skull helmet isn’t that far away from a death mask when you think of it. But apparently a lot of people thought it was his face. If you check on the mini there’s some tube ports coming out on the side of the mask, which wouldn’t be there post-heresy

I love the posing of the new lemartes, it very dynamic without falling into finnagly bits and tactical rocks like it seems is so common.

Would've been better for a new Wulfen, but it suits a melee character regardless.

8:20 I feel like the paint job on the old sculpt is quite a bit better. The wings on the old one look better too. I like mini's more in scale though, so that has the new one going for it for sure.

Astorath is a great reimagining of the old model.
But Lemartes... id... he's kinda bland other than his hairband on the skull helmet (yes hairband, for it lost its halo properties with the spikes and stuff, now it looks like a hairband for a bald skull)
I do find it funny that, when the last version of Lemartes was released, a great may people complained that the model was too 'busy', with too much detail obscuring clean lines and needlessly complicating painting and modelling. Now that we see a more paired back Lemartes sculpt, people (and I suspect some of the same people) are complaining that it lacks detail and is too 'bland'. The consistent throughline seems to be the complaining.
Literally NO ONE complained about he last Lamartes, which is rightfully regarded by most people as an all time classic sculpt…

I said that complaining among some hobbyists was ubiquitous to the point of it being one of the few constant factors over that time period, something that, if you are a hobbyist of thirty years standing, you should have observed yourself. @@gregorygreenwood-nimmo4954 when I said “literally no one” I meant that in my 30 years of being involved with the hobby I didn’t hear ANYONE complain about or criticise the Le Martes sculpt.
I’m not the biggest blood angels fan, but after that failure of an inquisitor, this was a much needed relief. I adore that skull helmet on lemartes even if it’s not 100% right. Granted, I’m obviously on a mad max kick right now, so I’m happy with anything immortan Joe related. Also, at least purity seals are extremely easy to come by to add more.

The accursed Tactical Rock... I redid my Storm Boyz with flight stands, which added money and time to the process simply because I hate sculpted in Tactical Rocks.
The only thing worse than a tactical rock is a flying base tactical rock 😂
Since they already updated black templars and dark angels, if they refresh more of the blood angels range after this, i feel like it would make sense for them to look at space wolves next in the not so far future.
And a space wolves update would propably come with Russ' return, so that might indirectly hint at him being the next primarch to return on the loyalist side. Maybe a Fulgrim vs Russ showdown at the end of 10th could be interesting.

I made my own warmag because they don't ship to Australia, got a plastic box, glued magnets to the bottom of the base and magnetic tape to the bottom of the box.
Love the new sculpts, Lemartes captures the beastial nature of the black rage, and Astrorath is a perfect if it ain’t broke don’t fix it upgrade.
Both are trash. Astorath arms look odd and Lemartes "HELMET" mouth is open, the pose looks like he's taking a shit and honestly He of all people is still in control even though he suffers from the black rage.
yea astorath is pretty good upgrade, honestly exactly what they should be doing instead of the intern sculpts like coteaz.
the only nitpick I have is that I like how the old is pivoted up by the scrolls while the new one is doing a rather standard leap, but that should be really easy to fix at home so its its whatever.
for once Im not upset they are upgrading an existing model, I had been genuinely afraid for years now that its gonna suck once its gets upgraded but its not bad.
I was today years old when I realized Astorath had a mask on. I thought he was just ugly as sin. New models are great tho!
The shoulders on Astorath look… wrong. Really looks like someone pulled the arms of an action figure way back rather than sculpting a person with raised arms.
Yeah its kinda shocking that the old models arms look better and his head looks kinda FAT

People are saying Astorath looks amazing. And yeah it is but the wings and face mask just look off for me. The wings don't look as feathery as before, the mask also seeming too smooth and less detailed. Though a good paint job could fix this
In my opinion this was a very lazy thing for games workshop to do. Only 2 new sculpts in the whole box, the rest are just kits we already had with upgrade sprews, lazy as hel
I actually prefer the new rubble base that Astorath is on to the partchment on the old model. I don't have have a BA force but this might start to sway me!

I think parchment is cooler than a rock in general, but I don't think this is the right mini for it. It detracts from the unhinged ferocity of the rest of the guy.
@fin4314 I agree parchment is itself more interesting than rubble for sure. But I just personally am not a fan of long unfurled partchement (I'm general) supporting the in-flight action of any mini.
@@fin4314 I prefere tactical rocks for practical reasons. It makes the model more stable and less prone to breaking. Counting how many times my friend broke his saint Celestine or one of her lil friends starts to get boring.
Being that it's called a "Death Company Dreadnought", it makes me wonder if you can make a Redemptor one as well as a Brutalis. A Ballistus seems like a waste of time, though.

I like the new Lemartes. He's a big, black, angry Space Marine that's here to break your spine because he sees a bit too much Horus. The Blood Angels artisanry is nice and all, but people forget how quickly that can fall away into just brutal savagery when they're afflicted by the Black Rage. Lemartes here is an excellent reminder of that. What the Blood Angels are fighting to stave off.

I still prefer both Lemartes and Astaroth in their previous versions. Old sculpts seem more...elegant? I don't know, new Lemartes looks a bit like a literal toy.

I MEHED, yes nice new character sculpts but box is held back by bloatware jump intercessors that have been shelf warming the distribution center since release

I have to say that I like both a lot. Although I like the new Lemartes menacing pose, definitely Astorath is truer to the original model. I hope his shoulder pads are not built in the torso, because the right arm in particular, is in a bit exaggerated upright position
Lemartes looks awesome, not overjoyed with Astorath's pose, but that can be meddled with. I wonder what he would look like with the axe lowered.

Anyone know the base size for the new HQ chars? Wahpedia still says 25mm, but no way the bases shown for the new models are that tiny. I assume 40mm now? Dante now being 50mm, this would make sense being one step up from the average marine, but one scale below mr perfect
What's nice is that the purity seal issue on lemartes is pretty easily remedied with spare bits or a touch of green stuff! Not a hard fix at all
Not a bad update but it does feel a little plain and less baroque to me. Do think removing the bone toes makes sense as they did look a bit odd in my view.

It's probably because of the angle that the photo is taken at, but new Lemartes strangely looks squatter and more firsborn-y than the old one to me.
Edit: I do like the update on his armour for the most part, but old Lemartes had a dignity in his pose that I loved. New one just looks angry
I'll be honest, I'm not a fan of the new models here.
New Lemarties lacks this sanctified, regal look he used to have, contrasting him being part of the Death Company - he looks way too feral in my opinion. And I REALLY hate the tiny intakes on Primaris jump packs. I won't ever get over this.
New Astorath ALMOST gets it, but the whole model is kneecapped by lack of parchment - which added a lot of mystique and dynamics to the old model.
DC upgrades for DC marines and Dread also look somewhat sub-par - they lack the decorative elements, as with a lot of Primaris stuff, they feel vary plain and bare bones, to be honest.
Lemartes pose isn't as nice, but I wouldn't complain. I'd definitely be putting the scroll work back on both minis, seems to be something GW has been moving away from which is a shame.
New Lemartes looks like he's wearing headphones, but at least he has a lot of character to him. What I'm not feeling is how bare the death company marines look, as old death company were still quite decorated.
Edit: They chopped Astorath's nipples off.

If you check on the mini there’s some tube ports coming out on the side of the mask, which wouldn’t be there post-heresy
