tried couscous, dehydrated carrots, dried mushrooms, no salt bullion today on my 750 Ml cup over my alcohol burner. Worked great. used also Frenche;s crispy onions. Tasted fine. Easy to locate ingredients, all very cheap. only error was forgetting couscous expands and soaks up liquids. so next time, less couscous
I love the German isotonic national drink, a non-alcoholic beer or, even better, a shandy, which quenches thirst and fills you up. You don't need to cook anything and so you don't need a stove. As long as it's summer, that's enough for on the go, well maybe a small salami and a piece of Greyezer hard cheese and one or two rolls to go with it. With best regards from the German wilderness, Bernd
I like how you started adding and then kept adding food to your list. 😏 The meals in this video are for overnight hikes where you need to bring two days of food or more.
agreed! "Traditional" meals are loaded with cheap sodium. I hate ( Strong word, but I do HATE the salty packets and dread consuming them! CHEAP! Unhealthy!! sorry for rant! I am going to test. your recommendations. I am an over 70 yr old female packers; use an alcohol stove and for convenience, desire quality nutrition and convenient. Thanks for video. Will share results in future. THAnk! NB
Thanks Naomi. Please be sure to update on this comment thread the results of your experience. :) The good side to the internet is the free exchange of knowledge and experience.
@@amputeeoutdoors So I experimented. Went to simple grocery store reading the sodium on the labels, and bought freeze-dried shitake and no sodium " Herb-Ox" Bullion, plain Chinese Soba Noodles and cooked with about 8 0z water on my alcohol stove. stirred all with my Spork. it worked. Had to re-hydrate shiitake. I let the pot cool. It I possible to create low. sodium meals.
Lots of water. I normally hike with two liters but this summer I've been taking three liters and my water filter. I also add electrolytes to my water which includes salt. So that, plus the sodium in the freeze dried meals is a lot of sodium.
With the amount I sweat I never worry about sodium on trail. In fact, I take additional electrolytes while out on multi day hikes. How's the taste on those meals? What kind of varieties have you tried? I've never been impressed with MRE's taste, even less impressed than a good freeze dried meal.
Electrolytes are one thing, 57% of you daily sodium in one dinner is another. During the summer, perhaps not such a big deal due to the sweating. But in fall, winter and spring I don't sweat nearly as much. The other benefit of these I didn't mention in the video is that when you're done heating your food, the heating bag can be used to heat up your hands, or put it inside your jacket to enjoy that warmth. The taste is good, in fact, a lot better than MRE's I've tried in the past. I've tried four varieties and enjoyed them all.
@@amputeeoutdoors Sorry, I clicked on your Amazon link and it says "Sorry we couldn't find that page". I would love to find a low sodium alternative to Freeze Dried Meals but, haven't had much luck. Thank you for the video though.

I've used couscous as a basis for some of my own backpacking meals too. It's a great because you can do almost anything with it to create a meal.
I have all of my limbs still but I have the low sodium diet disability. I needed a video just like this! Thanks!
Happy to help. 😀

Nice to know. 👍Our alternative to the hot 38C (last month) is a lot of water and an energy drink to boost strength. Greetings from us. 😊😊
