  • In this video I go over the basic fundamentals how a BRP Rotax-powered jet boat functions, from how thrust is made, to how your steering and shift mechanisms work.
This type of jet-drive has fundamental advantages over other brands, the reverse-gate system is patented by BRP.
Boat in this video is a 2020 Chaparral Vortex VRX 223 Jet boat, with twin supercharged, intercooled, 300HP BRP Rotax "Ace" Jet engines. With 600 instant horsepower on tap, this boat performs like a world-class sports car on the water, while allowing unmatched control and safety, due to the twin Rotax jet drive.

I bought my first jet boat this year, I bought a 212x yamaha just because I did not like the reliablility stories on the ROTAX, I don't like the SC rebuild after 200hrs. Other than that I like the look of the Chappy and SCARAB and they are made in Cadillac, MI which is an hour from where i live, Traverse City, MI.

We bought the single engine version (VORTEX 203) 3 years ago, they are great boats with a few words of caution.
They are noisier than a regular boat with a stern drive, the engines run at way higher speeds, max.8000 RPM, and as a result use a lot more gas.
Also, and i found this out the hard way, when coming into shallow water, turn the engine OFF, even in neutral the jet drive acts like a huge vacuum cleaner and sucks rocks and gravel up from the bottom and will damage the impeller and wear ring, happened to me last fall when taking the boat out of the water for the winter.
At least it not hard to take apart, Iv'e been a mechanic all my live so pulled it apart and replaced the impeller and wear ring and all is good again.
On the plus side, we bought the boat for water sport and since it has no propeller it's way safer than a regular boat, but even in the manual it warns you not come too close to the back with loose clothing or long hair since it can be sucked in to the intake.
I always turn the engine off when people are in the water and close to the boat.
Manouverability is great, the boat will turn on a dime, even does 180's on the spot, and what is really impressive are all the menus you can choose like for skiing, all from touch screen, accelleration curves, speed, even cruise control.
Docking is a piece of cake, just select docking mode from the on screen menu and you can literally inch the boat onto the lift or beside the dock, awesome.
i did find out to my chagrin that customer service from Chaparral and the local dealer is awful, we had trouble with radio reception, amplifier problem and all Chaparral did was revert it to the dealer who did nothing, I repaired all the problems myself.
After my last call with Chaparral asking what impeller the boat had, so I could replace it, they could not tell me and reverted me to BRP, the snag is that BRP has no listing for the boat so I spent hours on the internet researching where to find a wear ring and impeller, finally found them through an independent marine dealer.
All in all still happy with the boat, but it should have way better customer service considering the amount of money they charge for them.

I have a 2 year old Scarab 215ID with twin 300;s. All of a sudden the starboard engine will not start. It turns over but won't fire. I did the exhaust clean out and it was clear. Any suggestions? I don't have a dealer close by either.

Did you get the problem fixed?

@@rhettc416 Short answer yes. Went to a 2 battery system as it is in a slip and the bilge pump would drain the battery. However Rotax engines are also famous for "E Reverse Module Error." Not fun, puts the boat in slow mode. Through the jet boat site, I was able to determine 2 20amp modules are faulty. So $12 later on Amazon and we are good.
