Fighter Verses is an excellent app. They have a large assortment of verses already set up in a calendar as well as a few collections of large passages of Scripture (including all of Philippians and James, each scheduled to learn over a year) or you can add in your own verses and go at your own pace. There are multiple ways of reviewing and quizzing the verses in the app, as well as some songs to help. It's from the church John Piper pastored in Minnesota.

"Yep" to the earlier comments. Start digging around on internet searches like "best scripture memory app" and the two mentioned below, Scripture Typer and Fighter Verses seem to consistently be at the top of any list. Either are great. For me, I think the key to these things is a "just do it (already)" mentality. Some of us are prone to spend so much time looking for the best system, the right verses, and the perfect approach that a "paralysis of analysis" takes affect and you don't get out of the starting gate.

I've found that meditating on the word of God gets it into your spirit and then when sharing/talking about God/His word it comes up out of your spirit - the Holy Spirit in you bringing back to your remembrance all things the word of God says/teaches us. Just another way. Blessings ☺️

At one time, I had memorized Ephesians 1, Romans 1, 8, and 12, 1 Corinthians 13, the Book of 1 John, the Book of James, the books for 1 & 2 Thessalonians and Titus. However, reciting all of those on a daily basis became overwhelming and I eventually quit doing it as I was working al lot and didn't have time. After some time, eventually you can no longer recite verbatim. However, after memorizing them many times over the years (3 or 4 times each), I can now take a day and recommit any one of those chapters to memory where I can quote it verbatim again. I have memorized Ephesians 1, Romans 8 and 1 Corinthians so many times over the years, that just reading it once restores total recall. And yes, it is well worth the effort--the first time through any chapter is the hardest.

I’m 42 years old and I have started to memorize scriptures which I find it fascinating. Psalm 145 was the first to memorize and took me 21 days. After that time , I felt frustrated due to the amount of time spent in a Psalm of 21 verses. But I ve been doing for 6 months now and I have noticed that now I can memorize Psalm up to 23 verses in just 2 days. The key ? !!!! You must have fall in love with the passage and it will flow. For the Muslims on here trying to brag about memorizing the Quran and putting down Christians for not memorizing their bible, You have to understand the Bible has almost 800,000 words and Quran has only about 78,000 words. Even if a Christian decides to memorize only the New Testament books(books about Jesus) that would be 185,000 words which is like memorizing two and a half Qurans so honestly it’s not a good comparison to brag about. Plenty of Christians memorize portions of scripture that means something to each person and that is good enough.

Memorising scripture will be easy if one is eager to learn and use it in their daily life. I used to love memorising scripture during the times i used to spend travelling and i have memorised psalms 1, 15,16, 23, 27, 91, 121, 128, and almost finished 34. Beside a lot of scripture verses which come in handy during my night prayers. I am not a pastor or connected with any chsrismatic or pentecostal church. But i love to master that and love to prayer for people. I also compose my own gospel tracks that i have uploaded on UA-cam. May God bless all who come here.

I love memorizing you'll never run out of scripture to memorize. I've memorized the book of James, 12 chapters of John, Psalm 103, and as a birthday present I'm memorizing my Wife's favorite Psalm 139, about half way done. I rotate a chapter of what I've already memorized everyday. when i come to James I do the whole book. I actually don't spend that much time on memorizing a little bit everyday and you will be surprised how far you can get if you keep it up. I find their is a flow to the words when your reciting. do a word picture for a key word to keep the flow going. everyone can do it you just have to start.

And what I notice is that he also has an acute sense for understanding the scriptures and the things of God. So whenever someone puts God first and seeks His righteousness, memorizing scripture becomes pleasurable and not laborious.

For a few verses, write them on a 3x5 card in capital letters on one side, including punctuation. Begin each sentence with a larger cap.
On the other side write only the first letter of each word & punctuation marks. Looks weird, but follow my reasoning here.
Read the written-out side several times out loud. Flip to the first-letter-of-each-word side (call it side 2) and recite the verses, using the first letter to jog your memory. Can't remember what the word is? Flip it over and look. Rinse, spin, & repeat.
Here's the cool part: once you can do side two without error a bunch of times, looking at side 2 while you do it, start at the END (usually a period, comma, or semicolon) and do it BACKWORDS. Get lost?, flip it over and check. This is an open-book test.
When you can recite the verse (s) backwards (looking at side 2), you have memorized the passage. You may not BELIEVE that you have, but you have.
Stick the card in your pocket & when you have a moment (in line @ the store; waiting at a red light, listening to your boss in a boring meeting -whenever) pull it out, look at side 2 & quote the passage, backward & forward a time or two. You have it!
Now comes the hard part: Put the verses into PRACTICE! LIVE them.
    May God bless your study.

Psalm 119:11 "I have hidden your word (oh God) in my HEART, that I might not sin against you." People please, its the heart that God desires not the head; if your motive for wanting to learn and know the holy scriptures is right then you will not only have the right words to speak when the time comes but you will also be able to speak them in the love of God to those who need to hear them. But it all starts by recognizing both our own great need as well as the reality of the holy God who lives, gives life, and holds all things together by his mighty love.

The benefits of memorizing God's word are immeasurable. I memorized the book of Ephesians because I was asked by my pastor to teach our church's main bible study earlier this year and I still use the book of ephesians every day and see it's implications, paul's theology, and practical applications every day; months after memorizing Ephesians. Though packed with dense, deep theology Ephesians is a relatively short book in terms of memorization.

I don't quote it right but I understand it perfectly so I take my understanding of God's word to Him whenever I'm praying but whenever I try to say it as it is in the Bible, I start losing connection because I'm struggling to get it right word for word. That's very good! Got me recalling something I read about memorizing longer passages: a fellow was doing it and found it worked only up to a point, when including the chapter:verse markings in memory. Then he tried dropping those, and learning the scriptures not so much verse-by-verse, but more like story-by story, and gobbled up a whole lot longer passages, and books. Went about on Appalachian trail after that, stopping at churches to recite for folks an entire Gospel by heart - which is a wonderful experience to hear, by the way.

That is true about the words getting lost from you once you stop reviewing it. On the other hand, when you keep re reading and reviewing scripture the extreme opposite happens. You gain knowledge that is beyond the letters. You discover more meaning each time that it’s mind blowing! Some things are uncovered at the right time that if you’d experienced it you got chills from understanding little by the little the mystery in God’s work. The scriptures come to life and some of the teachings in scripture are made manifest through your own experience of them. You see it unfold as it is happening and your mind doesn’t just understand the knowledge but your spirit actually understands the truth in the scriptures. It’s magical truly truly magical sometimes.

I think the key to memorize scripture is to read the scripture and apply it to your life that way the scripture becomes you. Just as the late great Dr. Myles Monroe said, “ it’s better to know what a scripture means than to memorize scripture” If your not applying it to your life it doesn’t matter because even Satan can quote scripture. Satan quoted scripture to Jesus in the desert while he was fasting

That's true. Obedience is key. We don't just want to memorize for the sake of it and just end up saying them rotely. We do need to hide in our heart His Word so as not to sin against God. We do need to biblically meditate on the Word. Plus when witnessing we need rely on the Holy Spirit to speak the Word ( we must have knowledge of it verbally too)to the unbeliever since "So then faith cometh by hearing and hearing by the Word of God" Romans 10:7

Yes, the Holy Spirit does do that. But why wouldn't you memorize scripture? The Bible says to keep God's word in your heart. I've heard testimonies of how God can use the verse you're memorizing to open doors to sharing his love. And I can't tell you how many times I couldn't quite remember the wording to that one verse. The Holy Spirit does move, but if you don't know scripture then you won't personally know God as well as you could. Check out Timothy Keller's sermon on "knowing the father". It doesn't talk about memorization, but it does explain the necessity of actively seeking out God through his word.
But why ever would *we* put forth effort to seek God?

Good information. I've read Andy Davis' Scripture memory method and found it helpful. But the best way I have found to memorize Scripture is to not focus on memory but on meditation. I meditate on Scripture every morning and evening, sometimes the same text, but often a different text or the next passage over a larger text or book. Meditating on a text word by word opens up its meaning and application as nothing else I've found. The more you meditate on the text the better. The added benefit of this method is that prayer naturally flows from meditating on the text, and . . . oh yes - you find that you remember the text. You've memorized the text you're meditating on without the pressure and work of memorization (meditation is not work but a joy). You probably won't memorize whole books this way (maybe Jude and 3 John), but you will remember many short and medium sized passages that you can return to often, which helps you retain what you've learned. I highly recommend this method. It has been a great blessing to me and many others I've shared it with. This has been especially helpful for people who struggle with depression and/or anxiety as they focus on texts that speak to their need.

Moving memorization from short term to long term memory is integral to keeping it securely in our mind. After memorizing a chapter word perfect, repeat it every day for 7 days. Then after, recall that chapter once a week until it becomes trivial. Then, move it again to once a month only. This helps it become cemented in our long term memory and strengthens our ability to recall it. By occasionally remembering what we've learned, we have a much better chance of retaining all the life giving scripture we spent so much effort memorizing. Hope this helps, God bless.

"The Navigators" is a great group focused on Scripture memory. I've found what works for me best as far as retention is to consciously live my life by it, 'the one thing I do'. There is a difference, I think, between believing in something and 'be-living' that something. Time spent in prayer and focusing on GOD, giving HIM praise and gratitude for ALL THINGS is the starting point. Love, Joy, Peace to all. Philippians 3:13-14, 3:7-11, John 1:12-13, Philippians 4:4-7, Galatians 5:22-2

When I first heard verses like 1 Timothy 4:8 which says "Exercise profitith little, but godliness is good for all things." I remembered it cause I am a fatty and I related to it. You don't need to remember it word for word, but meaning for meaning.
A verse that I don't really like or care for is much harder for me to memorize long term. Target scripture that you like or that you can use a lot in real time. A verse like Ephesians 4:29 is probably going to be a better verse to memorize than some random verse out of the book of numbers

If we were to borrow Dr Davis' method, and add the practice of "spaced learning", we could memorize plenty of books of scripture, and also keep them from fading for a lot longer. I mean: eviewing the whole book you just learned, every day, then every other day, then skip more and more days: the memory of that book grows deeper and stronger and needs less and less frequent review to keep it fresh. What is the best way to retain the Lord's words in our heart?
Write the words on a small 3 by 5 paper and carry them and make a record of the words.
Then repeat the words allowed which are written while at the same time hearing the record of your own voice.
Do it often with the purpose of putting your own melody to the words.
Then make a record of you singing the words. Then play the record of you singing and sing along the words as you hear the record.
Consider how many of us learn the A, B, C's.
Once the song is learned, can any one ever fail to remember their a, b, c's?
Then teach your children the song and they too will retain the LORD's words in their heart and will have the talent to be instant and rehearse the pure words of the LORD in the ears of those that both need to be saved and those that seek the spiritual water of salvation.
I put a melody to Proverbs 4 line 4 which is one of hundreds of precepts my children and I sing:
Proverbs 4:4 He taught me also, and said unto me, Let thine heart retain my words: keep my commandments, and live.
Keep singing the words in the precept over and over again. You will soon be ready to rehearse the counsel of the Lord's heart and sing the words of the Lord throughout the day.
    Psalm 119:54
Thy statutes have been my songs in the house of my pilgrimage.
    Colossians 3:16
Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly in all wisdom; teaching and admonishing one another in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing with grace in your hearts to the Lord.
    Psalm 40:1-3
I waited patiently for the LORD; and he inclined unto me, and heard my cry.
[2] He brought me up also out of an horrible pit, out of the miry clay, and set my feet upon a rock, and established my goings.
[3] And he hath put a new song in my mouth, even praise unto our God: many shall see it, and fear, and shall trust in the LORD.
Proverbs 6:20 My son, keep thy father's commandment, and forsake not the law of thy mother:
21 Bind them continually upon thine heart, and tie them about thy neck.
22 When thou goest, it shall lead thee; when thou sleepest, it shall keep thee; and when thou awakest, it shall talk with thee.
23 For the commandment is a lamp; and the law is light; and reproofs of instruction are the way of life:

Sorry if this is going to sound critical, but I think the technique mentioned in this video is pretty awful, because it all boils down to rote memorization. If it does work for you, more power to you though. The technique that I've been using is like the memory palace technique, since verses are sequential:
    1) I picked ESV, because I want to focus on the verse and not the grammar, or the archaic verb tenses/pronouns. Pick whichever translation works for you.
    2) Pick a place that you know well, typically your house. Identify as many places (called loci) in your house as the number of verses you intend on memorizing. There should be a trail from the first verse all the way to the last verse as you proceed through your memory palace.
    3) In each verse, pick out keywords that will help you remember the verse.
    4) In each verse, place those keywords in that loci that matches up with verse number. Make up a story with the keywords if that helps you remember. Reading a commentary might also help contextualize and increase your imagination for that loci.
    5) Use a spaced repetition schedule to help you practice and identify weak areas.
    6) You want to memorize 2-3 verses each day depending on how much time you want to allocate. If you have more time, then pile on more verses. Each time you practice, you recite the entire set of verses that you've memorized so far.
I try to recite verses when I shower, pray or meditate.

Thank you and God bless you. This works for me. It can be tedious but the result is a blessing to my soul

The same way we rewind a song 50 times is the same way repetitiveness for Bible verses

It's weird how you'll learn an entire song within a week of its release but cannot memorise scripture 😭. I feel like it's God's way of keeping me engaged with the word of God everyday. Otherwise we'd just memorise the entire Bible and never have the need to read the Bible.

Why are people saying not to memorise scripture because it won’t help? Then they say that the devil memorises scripture. Do you not think that your LORD knows the scriptures? Jesus memorised them very well and thus knew them perfectly so that he was impossible to deceived. Many times, he quoted scripture from his head. It is good to know it in your head, then you will know what is correct and what is incorrect. What is a lie and what is true. You will be impossible to deceive. And there WILL be great deceptions that were prophesied in the bible. So please be prepared. The devil misquotes scripture.
