Watching Fellow Travellers from a country that still criminalizes and discriminates queer people is quite the experience. I'm happy for the liberation the younger queers experience today and I hope for that reality in my own community someday.
HAPPY PRIDE MONTH GUYS… LOVE YOU!!! ❤️🧡💛💚💙💜 Jonathan Bailey is 36. So he would have been 12 in 2000. Listening to his and your comments, I thought back to 1997’s Julia Roberts film “My Best Friend’s Wedding,” and Rupert Everett. That movie was gigantic when I was young and in the late 90’s Ron-coms were THE THING! Julia was already a box office gold MEGA Star. But that film really rocketed the careers of Cameron Diaz, Dermot Mulroney, Paul Giamatti, etc. And while Rupert was acknowledged as being on of the stand outs in a great cast. And the prospects of him being a major Hollywood Leading Man and Star were all being promoted and right there for the taking. That ALL went away once he came OUT and confirmed he was Gay. His career never was the same and definitely diminished. Another sad casualty of Homophobia. It has ALWAYS been easier for those of us behind the camera or footlights to be authentically ourselves. And thankfully things are and continue to get better for LGBTQ+ Actors. But I just was having a conversation with an Actor friend this morning about being out. As it is STILL a consideration and risk each individual needs to make for themselves and their careers. And you are ABSOLUTELY 100% CORRECT! The Entertainment Industry is actually quite small… and there are no real “secrets,” just unspoken ones, about people’s sexuality. EVERYONE KNOWS who is Lesbian, Gay, or Bi. There are HUGE HUGE Stars EVERYONE “knows” FOR A FACT are Gay!!! And for the most part in social circles no one really cares. It is when it comes to image and marketing globally is where problems unfortunately still arise. And even though there are A LOT people in powerful positions making decisions who are OUT themselves. It is Show “BUSINESS” and in the end it is about making money. So marketing a major film property with hundreds of millions invested. You don’t want to deal with marketing and distribution problems in a country like China or Saudi Arabia with an openly Gay lead. So people A LOT of people keep who they really are on the down low! 💸🤐💸 “Fellow Travelers” was truly important, impressive, and perfection on SO MANY levels culturally! Not the least of which were the MANY MANY moments of Jonathan & Matt “au naturale!” 🥵🤤🥵🤤🥵
Guys this makes me so happy. Coz their interviews together but more so their bond is what is so rare to see in this industry. Matt called his friendship with Jonny as SACRED. Idk which one your reacting to but I’d like to tag the links of their best ones and must watch⬇️ Below.

Reacting to interviews is such a good format! Thank you for reacting to this interview, I think every single one that I saw with FT cast members brought out so much important stuff. It's always a pleasure to watch them ❤
This was a great idea. I’ve been very moved myself by cast & crew interviews on a number of queer centric television series. There’s a short video called “The Making of Heartstopper” that shows how many LGBTQ people were involved in every element of that show.
I have a goddamn hard exam tomorrow And then I'll be right here to watch this You guys are the chill after exams for me😂❤❤❤love you sincerely Poor medical student Tilda 🏳️🌈 🇮🇹🇮🇹🇮🇹🇮🇹🇮🇹🇮🇹🇮🇹🇮🇹🇮🇹🇮🇹🇮🇹🇮🇹
I feel like a good percentage of men in Hollywood have always been queer. People in the industry knew who was gay but kept it on the down low. Once you come out or were outted, Hollywood's fear was that you couldn't make the studios money anymore. In Hollywood/the USA, money is power.
I love this idea of watching cast interviews too. There have been so many interviews i have seen that does make me think what would Alex and Josh say about this. Like Lisa Ambjorn's Permanent Rain Press interview after s3.
My first film/TV moment that showed me that love was more than just what I was taught was when I randomly saw the movie Get Real (1999) as a teenager. That movie was my first understanding of queer love and the first time I heard 'it 's just love, what is everyone so afraid of'. It changed me forever. Portraying all of this in film/TV is absolutely important. I recommend adding Get Real to your film queue, it's a British drama/comedy. 😉
I love how we went through this whole video without saying it... Yes STRAIGHT MEN playing gay roles is okay... but Gay men playing gay roles is really really important. I've seen so many str8 actors who have played gay roles and, although I see genuineness, I also see them come at it in an actor/(its another job) way rather than the fact every little line or movement they do represents us to a bigger audience regardless if they're watching or not.
Happy pride month! Thailand is currently on track to legalise gay marriage by the end of the year! It'd be cool to see you react to some queer shows/music from there to celebrate - I'd recommend the shows I told Sunset About You and 180 Degrees Longitude Passes Through Us 😊
Oh I love what you did with your outfits! Wether it was intentionally or not: my very first thought as I saw you was that you’re wearing the same colours as Andrew and Paul in some of the All of Us Strangers promo.❤
As someone who was basically growing up in the 60s and 70s, I can attest to how little representation they really was back then on television or in movies. On the rare occasions there were any gay characters at all, they were almost always the broad stereotype that I didn’t identify with at all, which made it really hard for me to see myself as being gay until I was much older. So it is refreshing now to see shows with LGBTQ+ characters of all kinds so that it’s much easier to find a character who you can relate to.
Thanks for this, a brilliant show and amazing cast!!! I’m not sure if this had been suggested before but perhaps review Victim with Dirk Bogarde from the early sixties. Bogarde was a gay man who pretty much tanked his career by starring in this film. However he did go on becoming a great character actor…. Just a thought.
'Fellow Travelers' was such a Great and most of all IMPORTANT show... but I don't think I can rewatch it any time soon, as it mostly just made me Sad and Angry 😭 - That said, it is still an AMAZING Story, that was worth Telling!! 🥰
Watched an interview with the Fellow Travelers showrunner Ron Nyswaner. Per SAG rules, you cannot inquire about an actor's sexuality during the audition process (answering the "should straight actors play gay roles question). How he and the producers got around this was by checking actor's social media accounts. 😋
For a period representation of societal attitudes and views on homosexuality, read 'The Charioteer' by Mary Renault which has not been out of print since it was originally published in 1953. The book is a beautifully written gay romance set in England in 1940 concerning a World War II triangle among a soldier, a sailor and a conscientious objector. Mary Renault was a lesbian who left England in 1948 with her partner to find the freedom to write without censorship. She is probably best known for her gay historical fiction (my personal favorite being 'The Persian Boy' concerning the romance between Alexander the Great and the Persian dancer Bagoas, of whom Plutarch wrote that Alexander's troops, seeing their king sitting with Bagoas, began "clapping their hands and shouting till Alexander put his arms round him and kissed him.")
Jonathan Bailey was 12 in 2000. Which reminded me of Section 28. I believe you are both too old to have lived under any of it, but are you maybe old enough to remember its impact on anyone close to you?
I really worry about this idea that only queer people should play queer roles, because it legitimises the the idea that the opposite should also be true.
Exactly... acting is just that. Because by those standards, an actor could never play a cop or a killer or an alien because they don't have real life experience as that character.
@@merlin3830 one project helmed and developed by a team of queer creatives isn't the trend or the threat you think it is, but it's telling that you think it is
are you seriously trying to suggest that this is the only show that has queer characters played by queer actors? And I"d love to know what my comment is "telling" you.
As a closeted man from Middle East where it’s not very safe to come out, this gave me: Hope.. and chills
Sending you so much love. 💗💗💗

When Jonny was 12 Queer as Folk was out - the UK version, and the US version came out at the end of that year. They were both groundbreaking shows.
