- Useful bench microscope for soldering or other intricate work.
Put together for not a lot of money.
HD camera bought from Banggood:
www.banggood.c....
Search eBay for "C mount lenses"
Mine is a Canon 18-108mm zoom lens F2.5.
Also required a monitor or TV with an HDMI input.

This is the best "home made" micro-camera video of all I've watched. Most of this project can be made with supplies in my "semi-valuable" pile of parts. Yes! Working space!
We all have a pile of parts 😁
I have built something similar using just a macro Lens, a camcorder with 60x zoom which is hooked up to a monitor stand that can move up and down.
Camcorder is about $75 used. Macro lens somewhere in the 20 - 25 and the stand also somewhere around that.
What a good idea! Been looking at microscopes and didn't even think of using a camera, i have a camera with a macro lense just need a suitable stand
This is great.
Any idea on specific lens model that I can look for on ebay? Would love to get a cheap one, and not one from a modern camera as most seem to be.
If you want exactly the same spec then search for "18-108 f2.5 lens" them check the mount matches the camera you are buying. Most are C-mount type.
This looks great. I will put it on my to do (someday) list ;-)
It doesn't seems cheap at all.The camera itself with extra lenses and the adjustable base all these together might cost around 300-400$.Cheap could say if costs around 20-30 bucks maximum.
I have built two of these, this one and another for a fiend of mine, the total spend each time was around £140 so about $200 (including a used monitor). I don't think you could put together anything else with a similar resolution and focal distance for less than that.
I have owned ready built ones in the past that cost about the same but they were no way as good. It's the lens size on this that makes all the difference. In particular, the aperture on the ones available in the stores is a lot smaller.
Depends upon what you need it for really, the focal distance with this one makes it ideal for soldering.
Wow i'm not the only creative brain here 😀
I've bought a 30 euro usb microscope, moded the magnification a bit so the work space is even better and than I've bought one of thise magnification loops with an LED ring in it removed the glass ,made a platform with a hole where the microscope is fitted in and placed that instead of the magnification glass.
Also thought about modding the holder to fit an extra lense and increase the workspace some more.
I might just go this route instead of buying an amscope se400-z. need to fix some hdmi ports on several ps4 consoles I bought.
🙂 the first job I used this for was an Xbox hdmi port.
Hi , I came across your channel after wanting to build my own digital microscope and like what you had achieved that I've more of less copied it. I have the same lens and camera a slightly different stand and same ring light. However it's the x4 adapter that's spoiling the completion. Why do I look for? Is it a macro lens or,Barlow lens or what? Is it an adapter at x4 or 2 rings at x2 stacked together? If you can shed some light I'd be grateful. Geoff IoM
@@geoffwilson3267 Buy a set like this and then you can experiment what works best for you. If you have the same lens then you need the 49mm set 🙂

Thanks for the video!! Some very useful informations there.
One suggestion tho.. to fix the issue with shaking, I would some disconnect the camera from the working area. For Example have a small table mounted to the wall and have the camera stand on it.. that way if you shake ur table or do things, the camera is not effected.
That's a good idea. 👍
I just use the camera on my smartphone with its light on. Digital zoom in and it's good enough quality to work. It's a camera, so there's minimal lag.
I do the same 😎
Lol haven't thought about that i might actually try that. Did you mount your phone?
@@BorisBirkenbaum Depends on the circumstances. If I need both hands I mount it. If I'm just investigating a fault I go handheld because it's often easier to move the camera than to move the whole work piece.
Its too bad i nissed out on this cheap of a setup. These hdmi digital cameras are twice the cost they were two years ago.
Hi great vid. I'm in the UK. I was wondering if you could give me links to everything please? camera, lens, light stand. I don't have a clue
Here is some info to help you (please note any links are only valid at time of posting):
- A similar camera from AliExpress
www.aliexpress.com/item/1005005643578597.html
- Stand:
The one I have is a "Rocwing Pro Copy Stand M" - they appear to have gone up in price since I bought it.
If you search for "copy stand" you will find similar items
- Lens:
If you want exactly the same spec then search for "18-108 f2.5 lens" then check the mount matches the camera you are buying (the one above is C-Mount)
The lens I used is a Canon 18-108mm zoom lens F2.5. The 'F' number is the maximum aperture - the bigger the number, the more light it lets in, and therefore the better the image (usually the higher the price too!) F2.5 works well in my example.
The 18-108mm, is the size of zoom (the amount you can enlarge and decrease the image on screen) Other zoom sizes will work but I find this value works well for the stand I have and the distance it is from the table.
- Ring light:
The light I have is a Neewer LED Ring Light but I cannot see a good price for these anymore.
There are other LED ring lights that will work just as well.
- Close Up Filter Lens +1 +2 +4 +10 Lens Filter Kit:
Just search lens adaptor + whatever size your lens is (eg. 58mm)
The closeup adapter rings are important as they allow the zoom lenses to focus in a relatively short distance.
Hope this helps.
I am not able to find any cctv lens 18-108 (or smaller zoom) for less than 120$ excluded shipping cost - what search query did you use to find this lens? Any help is much appreciated, thanks,
Don't know where you are located, but I can see one available in the UK (16-160mm) with a C mount for £45.
Search for: zoom lens "c mount"
You can also buy adapters to convert popular lenses to C mount if you saw a cheap one, but the old CCTV lenses are often the cheaper option as no one wants them anymore. I'd set up a saved search in eBay so you get notified when one come up 👍
hi m8 thxs for the video can u help me top understand what type of lens i should be looking for i have no clue about lenses

@@ANTandTEC thxs m!
Great to put in your finger in the middle there. Nice setup for soldering. Just don't give us your middle finger. hahahaahahaha just a little humour there.

Great info. Very clear👍
very good
Very nice.
Amazing post. Can you please provide part name or number, link to the 4X close up ring and the ring light. Thanks in advance.
The light I have is a Neewer Macro light but I cannot see a good price for these anymore.
There are other LED ring lights that will work just as well such as this one:
www.fonefunshop.com/universal-led-ring-light-for-microscope-black.html
The close up rings are available from many places, search for "macro close up lens" + the size you need. The packs of 4 (+10, +4, +2. +1) are the best to be able to change the magnification.
Something like this I found on Amazon:
www.amazon.co.uk/Optical-Glass-Macro-Filter-Cameras-default/dp/B09CMMTV15
@@ANTandTEC Thank you so much for the links. I have now received the parts and am about to put them together.
This is perfect. I went out and bought exactly this lens, 4k Hyear camera on the way, going to test out the Raspberry Pi HQ camrea module in the meantime. Will report back with results!
How heavy is that lens?
I agree with below comment, just signed up, keep them Vid's coming, have a G/day.
what is the total maximum optical zooming ratio all together?
Difficult to calculate so I zoomed in on a ruler and measured it on the screen 🙂
1cm measured 33cm. That was on my 19" monitor. Would obviously be different depending upon the monitor size used.
Do you think a 20-100 zoom lense would work ok? Those seem a lot more available than the 18-108 you used.
Yes of course. Will just have a little less magnification.
Great Job ! man, I love it
awesome! Great idea!
@ANT&TEC Hi again, I purchased the "Close Up Filter Lens +1 +2 +4 +10 Lens Filter Kit 58mm" but the lenses do not fit the canon zoom lens, they are bigger in size (58mm). Are you using an adaptor to fit the macro lenses to the canon zoom lens please?
The link was only meant as an example - I assumed you would have got the right size for your particular lens 🙂
Now that you have the wrong size, yes, you can buy an adaptor, and these are cheap to buy. Just search lens adaptor + 58mm + whatever size your lens is.
Hi. I can't find anywere that stand that you have. Can you maybe send me a link where I can buy it or, tell me which are the key search words? Thanks.
The one I have is a "Rocwing Pro Copy Stand M" - they appear to have gone up in price since I bought it.
If you search for "copy stand" you will find similar items 👍
Hi, I found and bought the same lens after watching your video. Could you advise to use barlow lenses? Barlow lenses and close up ring lenses should be 48mm for this? Thanks for your sharing this good work.
The lens ring on the Canon lens I use in the video is a 49mm size.
@@ANTandTEC First of all, I need to fix the distorted lens frame. Thank you for the answer.
I have seen people capture video from the monitor that you have connected from the camera. However I have no idea how. I have a camera HDMI directly connected to a monitor..but how do people capture that also to a PC? thanks for the video
It's not a feature of the monitor. They must have had another box in-between doing the capturing.
@@ANTandTEC ahh ok thank you
couldnt i just use an adapter and stick this lense on an old iphone i have laying around?
Yes I guess so. I've not seen any adaptors like that.
@@ANTandTEC I was researching it since I posted that comment, and i would need to take the lense out of the phone, and find the focal length and make an adapter to fit the focal length. Alot of work, and tools I don't have lollll
@SmartMoneyRyan Those cameras are not bad prices though 👍
@@ANTandTEC free, of you have old phones laying around 😜
Thanks for this great video and ideas that you have shared.
Is this microscope good enough for mobile repairing specially iPhones?
Yes I would say so.
Wish I could do this with my gopro
It's the lens on the GoPro that stops you, magnifying like this.
I would love to see more details on how you set this up. What are the specs of the lens that you need to do this. You can't just put on any camera lens on it and expect it, to be a microscope, or do you? I dont know enough about imaging systems... ;)
The important numbers are the zoom length and the magnification rings, both of these are mentioned in the video. The aperture (F number) relates to how much light is let in and consequently how bright the image is.
@@ANTandTEC I suspect there is a difference between lenses made for close up high magnification imaging and high distance low magnification mod. Or can I take any lens and reconfigure it in any way?
@jackmclane1826 Zoom lens is what you want. That way you get the longer focal distance. If you use a traditional macro close up lens you end up being very close to object.
Where I bought rings, you can link? thanks
Search for "close up" and also add the lens size and the magnification you require.
So example search text would be: "close up 49mm +4"
Hey. How much does the lens spec matter? Would 60mm and F1.6 be okay?
Difficult to say without testing one.
The F number is better than mine - so will let more light in which is good.
The focal length (60mm) is about half way what my zoom is. It will not magnify as much as I showed on the video.
@@ANTandTEC Brilliant. Thanks.
Hello! I would like to know that where did you buy the white panel?
The one I have is a "Rocwing Pro Copy Stand M" - they appear to have gone up in price since I bought it.
If you search for "copy stand" you will find similar items 👍
Pity the HD camera is sold out on Banggood !
It was a while ago I bought mine.
Any 1080p camera with a c-mount lens should give the same results.
@@ANTandTEC Sometimes it doesn't always work out like that. There is nothing like copying something which works already !
Great set up - thank you for sharing. Is there any lag between your movements and the display on the screen ?
Thanks 😊
There is no lag 👍
@@ANTandTEC Love it, thank you.
Would a regular canon dslr with a 50-200 mm lens work ? I am planning to use the hdmi out ,I was going to build one like yours but found this canon with a massive lens and wondering if it would focus on close objects
Yes if it is a mirror-less DSLR this would work. You would still need to add the closeup adapter rings to the zoom lens for it to be able to focus at the short distance (otherwise your camera would have to be further away)
@@ANTandTEC thank you , is there a number on that close up ring ? I am finding ones ranging from 44mm rings to 77 mm rings , I don’t understand how the optics work so I am confused.
@@FerdAboubakrOnline That number is the diameter of the large end of the lens. The size will be written on the end of the lens You will need to get the correct size closeup rings to suit.
Mine is 49mm but may be different for you depending upon the lens you have/get.
@@ANTandTEC appreciate your help . Thank you.
Can you give me info on the stand please?
Any issues with the camera sensor after 5 months?
No. Not on the ones I have used (i have made two with those cameras) owned for about 2 years
