  • I put this Newport Vessel 62lb Trolling Motor to hard use and after nearly 3 years and 400 hours of run time this trolling motor has seen better days.

    I reposted this video after fixing some sound issues, Hopefully the annoying high pitch sound is gone.

    That seal is what goes on most outboards, not just electric trolling motors. Usually fishing line or something gets wrapped around behind the propeller, and cuts the seal. If you have an outboard, you drain the gear oil every season, and if there is water in there, replace the seal. On these electric ones, I'll bet the shaft is slightly out of round from the prop hitting something, and that wears out the seal faster from spinning/rubbing on the shaft. I might start replacing my seals every year. I think they are just a few bucks, and you don't really need the stainless steel spring ones if you are doing it every year, so the seal should cost less than 5 bucks.

    Very interesting that you identified the weak link with these types of motors where they leak. I see potential for a design improvement in the future, like maybe an easy way to drain the lower housing and a customer replaceable seal at the shaft.

      You can replace the seal. He could have unscrewed the vertical metal shaft (use heat on threads, as plumbers putty holds it tight), pulled the wires to check them, and then cleaned everything inside the motor, put a new 5 dollar seal in, and buttoned the whole thing up. I would have taken about an hour or 2. But, yeah ... 2 to 3 years is max on these little motors.

    You nailed the facts. Cheap motor, cheap parts, similar life to bigger name brands. I am die hard MK fan but after replacing controller boards and getting another year out of, like you mentioned, I grabbed a Newport Vessels X-Series 55lb Thrust Transom Mounted. It's been a good and near same on battery usage after each 6 months old. MK is better at the start for battery usage, but falls quickly to average after about 50 hours use in salt. Could be battery, could be MK, could be combo of each but I didn't conduct strict test. When the mentioned Newport troller was priced at same cost as board, took the leap. Great video, thanks for sharing.

      That has been my experience...I'm ready for a new one, unfortunately 😕

      @@EngineeredAngler with the cost of new being so cheap, I don't even cry now. 3 years is all I ask for hard duty. The plastic gears start skipping about then, or boards give. I donate to local marine tech school and grab a new. They make fun projects with and I feel better didn't go to landfill. Great videos.

    I have their Kayak motor setup. So far so good, but of course it does not sit in the water or elements all the time. But it installed relatively easily and can get my kayak up to about 6 mph. Biggest issue was i went too big with the battery (24v 80Ah). even after 4-5 hours on the water I'm using about 25% of the capacity. that is obviously my mistake, otherwise its seems like a really nice product.

    Im trying to decide between a minn kota 55 Endura C2 ($200) vs the Newport Vessels NV 62 ($250). I guess prices really evened out. Whats your recommendation?
    I've been running my old minn kota 30 (gotta be like 15yrs old at this point) which still works but i need more thrust.

      If you can get the minn kota at $200, buy it, that's what I would do.

    @ 4:12 Sure, the motor is fixed but how are your nuts?

    Wonder how hard it would be to design an electric trolling motor with the motor mounted on top up out of the water and have it connect through a coupler to a lower unit like on a standard 5-6 hp 2 stroke outboard? That would eliminate the worries of getting water inside the motor and would keep all your electronic parts high and dry. Sounds like something engineering related, that would be right up your alley.

    I currently own a 55lb thrust NV. Is it worth upgrading to a 62lb thrust?

    • @EngineeredAngler
      @EngineeredAngler  Рік тому

      I'm not sure, I can say the thrust ratings from all the manufacturers are pretty "loose". If you're doing OK with the 55lb I don't think another 7lbs will be very noticeable. But if you're changing out the motor anyway, go for the bigger one.

    This is a ruddy brilliant channel. I was about to buy an electric outboard, shall now dangle a carrot in front of my girlfriend while she runs on a treadmill connected to propeller instead.
