- macmost.com/e-... If you need to do a "Mail Merge" to print out personalized documents from Pages, you can do it with a simple script. A table from Numbers can be used to customize text boxes in the Pages document and then you can print them all at once.

Thanks for this. I've been dipping my toe into scripting and this is a very useful example. Your technical level and pace is perfect for me. I thought to myself "What if I wanted to add student names to the files?" and there it is. Just the right level at just the right time.
I promise you I thought the very same thing. I'd not want the task of going back in and renaming those files. Well, guess what... our good friend Gary saves the day. Again.
I looked at the first minute of this and thought - too hard. But then I tried MS Word and other videos on Mac Pages. What a debacle. Macmost definitely gives the best information at the right level for general users. Thanks heaps.

Thanks for this. I just inherited a responsibility and have been searching for a feature within the two apps, Pages and Numbers, but couldn't find anything. That made me sad because I don't want to have to resort to Microsoft or Google apps to accomplish feat that has been pretty standard fare in the word processing industry. Now I'm happy.

I'm a recent convert to Mac after decades of using Microsoft Office/Windows. I'm shocked that Pages/Numbers doesn't have some simple built in tool for mail merge (for creating lables) like Office had going back to at least Office 97.
Kevin, Page isn't a full-fledge Wordprocessor and it's Free (included in the macOS). MS Office 365 is available for MacOS.

Beginner hack: If your text boxes aren't in the right order/placement: Instead of altering the code, run a trial script, then just move the text boxes to the right places in your Pages file and reformat font/style as necessary. No need to change the code. It doesn't seem to affect the way the order is read by Script Editor. I couldn't figure out how to renumber many boxes in the code, and this was an easy solution. You can also go the other way and simply re-order the columns in Numbers to get the same effect (I think??)
Every time I try to run the script editor, this script error comes up and I can't figure out how to solve it: Error: Error: The document “Letter Template” could not be exported as “export1”. The file doesn’t exist.

Resolved: I did not do the step of allowing full disk access. When I changed this it worked. Also make sure the file export path is correct. Thanks Gary this is my first coding experience and I am so grateful for your video!
I had the same problem and I can add that an easy way not to mess up the path is to go physically in the folder you want to export the files into, open the informations and copy and paste the path of the folder in the Script Editor, followed by the name of the folder. This resolved my problem because the reale name of the folders (Users and Desktop) were in english, even if I have the italian language set in my computer.

I think you can solve the text boxes' inconveniences by using placeholders and giving them script names, right? I found a tool that does a mail merge that way, but I'm trying to figure out how to script it on my own, as I need it to do things it cannot do. Do you maybe know how a placeholder with a script name can be accessed by a script, like you're accessing the text boxes here? Thanks!
First, try the regular Mail Merge (added recently, ua-cam.com/video/6CB0sIfxEg0/v-deo.html). Second, no, I don't think you can use scripts to access placeholders like that.

I love this simple script. Everything makes sense. Unfortunately I get an error with doc.textItem[0].objectText.set(...). I'm getting a javascript 1700 error - Cannot convert types. Is there something special about setting up the text box in the document? Thanks.

Gary is there anyway to get your formulas on a printed sheet. I would love to try this. It would save time taking screenshots and going through each one. Or have you developed an app or solver that would do this?

Hi Gary, nice and simple. I just struggle trying to save the pages document at the end of each loop as a new pages document without exporting it to PDF. I tried to come up with doc.save which kinda works but it does not save the changed document as a new one at the end of loop. It just overwrites the old document with new data and I end up with one document instead of 50 at the end of the script. Any suggestions? Thanks a lot.

This is how to do it. Using Automator would just be the same script, but it is easier to handle in Script Editor.
Keep getting Error -1719: Invalid index. What's up with that?
I'm getting an invalid index error when I run the script. I see it finds the first cell in the numbers doc then I get the -1719 invalid index error.
No , not this Apple Pages and Numbers had a simple mail mergr or drag and drop a customers info into the header of a doc such as invoice or quote how id that done?
Extremely frustrating.... keep getting "Error -1719: Invalid index." with no resolution to the issue.

I have a 'mail merge' envelope created for my Christmas cards w/placeholders plus a numbers doc which lists names and addresses of who I want to sent the cards to w/the headers titled the same as the placeholders. I 'merged' this last year & can't remember how I did it, dern it. But, I pulled up my #s doc along w/my 'mail merge envelope' and printed them one by one. That was fine as I only have a few, and it worked well. Would you happen to know what I did? : - ). TY for any insight or suggestions. PS - I don't want to use my Contact list for this. I have everything placed perfectly in my #s doc. TY!!

In Pages? Control+click and choose Learn Spelling or Ignore.

Check everything carefully. You probably have a bad file path in your script.

Thanks for the tutorial. I'm having trouble with the export and save task. I have 27 pages to export, what is the script for 27 pages? I see you have a script for 3 that you write as "i" if I understand correctly. Also it keeps telling me there's no file to save the document...I have created a file and I use the name in the script but it is still not working...any tips?
The script will handle 3 or 27 pages. It doesn't have a hard-coded 3 in it. It is just the example spreadsheet table happens to be 3 rows. Check and recheck your file path as there must be an error there.

@@timtae9369 You'll need to be methodical and troubleshoot. Look at the Numbers document. Look at your Pages document. Look at the file path. Test and try everything.Download the example files I provide and see how your work is different.
How do you export a PAGES or DOC please?
From Pages TO a Word file? You do that in File, Export.
Is is possible to have a script that you can place in a different folder, and it automatically runs given all input files are in the same directory? Instead of having Pages open for this script to work? Thanks
Pages needs to be open. The script can ask things of Pages if it isn't open.

@@Omar.Alamoudi I show it using two cells to fill in two text boxes. If you want more, you just have to extrapolate on that.
Tried it again with a different path to export. The freaking thing is still not working ... it only puts in the last item in the list :( ...... Looks like all the other comments were a year ago. I'm guessing this code is no longer working for 2021. :(
Should still work. If it does one item, then the basics are there. You just need to debug to see where you have something wrong.

This a very cumbersome process to accomplish what is a simple, everyday use of word processing software. Huge fumble on the part of Apple!!

Clunky, slow, and a security risk giving script editor full disk access. Pages needs to bring back mail merge support like it used to have.
That's not really a security risk. Why would running your own scripts be a risk? Pages will never bring back Mail Merge, but it is easy to get an app like Word that has it.
I totally agree! Have NO idea why they took it out. Also would like to see Mail Templates back!
