Old Whitefield Bar, those Red sandstone tenements were in good repair when knocked down. the view from them over the city centre and across the river was stunning, even better now. They would make a pretty penny in todays prices. I lived further along to the right of that picture, 519 Govan road and my view was great all the way to Glasgow University on the horizon. I still remember getting woken up as a five yo, to see the whole sky bright red, the night of the infamous Cheapside fire(1960), when so many brave Glasgow Firemen lost their lives. I used to be able to name every pub on Govan road, from the Old Govan town Hall to Linthouse. Hard to imagine but at that time, Govan road was little different to what you saw on TV & Films from the Boroughs of New York and it was just as diverse. I knew Poles, Turks, Greeks, Africans, Asians, West Indians, Italians, Chinese and more.
Wonderful. 0.17 seconds the handsome man on the right smiling with a pint in his hand is my irreplaceable Dad Wullie 'Boots' Hughes, behind him is my Uncle Joe Hughes. In the middle is Tommy 'Hooky' Coyne and at the front is Jackie 'Tinny' MacAtamney. 4 good friends drinking at The Windsor Bar in 1955.
What about Brechins (The black man) and The Gazelle along towards linthouse, used to go in there when we were in the training center at G.S.L. The good old day we got 4 pints for a £.
Anyone remember the Rose Queen Bar & Lounge sat on Govan road near Copland road. I met James Bond outside there, I think in 66 ?, Connery must have been filming the Documentary, Bunnets & Bowlers
id say that back in the day more beer was sold and drank here per square mile than almost anywhere else in the world !.. every street had 3 or 4 pubs !
I used to go waitressing occasionally when they had special nights - talent contests - on in there. My auntie Margaret Gordon worked in there are a cleaner and got me the wee sideline. That would be around 1967/68. Great at one time so it was. I came from Uist Street.
