    I first saw Robben in LA at Donte’s on Lankershim Blvd. Back then (1978) he played a cherry 335 through a Mesa Boogie. What a sound. I’d never heard a guitar player mix blues and jazz the way he did. Russell Ferrante played piano that night. It was the early days of what would become The Yellowjackets.

    In my humble opinion: lead playing and rhythm playing goes hand in hand. One cannot be a good lead guitar player without being great at playing rhythm. Thanks for the upload.

    Ford is constantly disrespected by all of these self proclaimed "experts" who publish lists of the top all time greatest guitarists. At a minimum I would rank him in the top 20 and it could be argued possibly even in the top 10 all time greats. Ford is unique in that he's not a pure jazz player or pure blues player or pure fusion player or pure rock player but he plays all of those genres of music exceptionally well. There aren't many other guitarists who can do that.

    • @VoodooApex

    • @VoodooApex
      @VoodooApex 3 роки тому

      Steve W He’s a real pariah for sure. I’m a fan of Ford but, he doesn’t really stick out. He’s always on the pocket ya know. Other guitarists have their own things that set them apart. Gary was just ferocious, it’s almost primal when he gets into his zone. SRV is a perfect player, it all comes out as if it was the studio version. Chuck Berry has all the tricks and knows when to utilize them for maximum effect. Roy Buchanan was unassumingly vicious. Derek Trucks is the greatest slide player of all time. Hendrix is the GOAT, whole different plain. Robben just fails to excite in a carved out path I think. He’s great tho 🤙🏽

    • @GTX1123
      @GTX1123 3 роки тому

      @@VoodooApex i feel the exact opposite. for me fords playing sticks out way more than moore - that being said i discovered gary moore quite late and listened to all the other blues giants before and didnt feel that he was unique in comparison, same with joe bonamassa. maybe i would feel different if i grew up with him, or discovered him first. however there is one thing that annoys me with ford its that his bands always sound like they come straight from dr.rhythm, especially on talk to your daugther it feels like he is playing some royalty free backing tracks of the youtube - just in 1988.
